What Motivates Students?

1/21/2023

Picture
Read the New York Times article by clicking on the image above, then write a Reader's Response for what you read.

1. INCLUDE: First Initial, Last Name AND Class Block.

2. Respond in no more than five (5) complete sentences and no less than three (3) complete sentences. (This helps you write more concisely and think more critically.)

3. You MUST comment on at least TWO other posts from any student in any class.
Your replies cannot be identical comments on different posts and posting shallow comments such as "I agree" or "I disagree" will earn you a zero. Make sure your reply addresses the comment that you are responding to.

4. Set a weekly alarm or calendar timer. Whatever you do to remember other important events, I'd do the same for this assignment.

5. Don't wait until the last minute.
Telling me that you didn't do the assignment on Friday because you broke your leg, for example, on Thursday will not do anything for you when you've had a week. Be responsible and accountable.

CAUTION!! Do NOT embarrass me, yourself, your class, the English department, the school, your family or your upbringing with tasteless, meaningless comments. This is for a grade.

DISCLAIMER: If you do not respond AND comment on TWO others, you will not receive credit for this assignment. If you do not write your name correctly, and I don't see your work, you will not receive credit for this assignment. It's all or nothing.

WARNING: If you post even one second past midnight, your comment might appear to be posted, but as soon as it is opened to be graded, it will automatically delete.

What motivates students to learn was the article question, and great teachers, interactive classes, setting their own goals are great answers. I just believe it's more than that, there are things outside of school that could give you motivation. When I was in 1st grade my mom would make me write 50 dictionary words a day so I could understand and learn more things and be ahead. Now every time I see a word I don't recognize I quickly run to google. I'm now sure why, but I guess you could say my mom motivates me to learn which is an outsdie source.

I agree that teacher play a big part on a student's will to learn. A great teacher that actually cares for their students, and pushes them to do better, and work harder gives students lots of motivation.

I really do agree with this comment because in elementary, school my teachers did the exact same thing having us write down at least 10 to 20 words in the dictionary and memorizing them and taking a test over them so growing up we wouldn’t have to always struggle with spelling or reading what they did then motivates us to learn now

What motivates students to learn was the article question. They said who motivates them are great teachers, interactive classes, setting their own goals, and being able to go to the college that they want to. Other things motivate kids not just in school, but outside of school.

M.Banks B6

I agree with this, because school has become a really difficult place for students to really learn and grow, especially with the harsh conditions of the way we’re being tight people don’t even want to show up to school anymore so going to go to school and having good teachers to teach you the proper way makes you want to learn more with all honesty what really motivates everyone and all students is the environment in who you are around positive energy goes along way

J leslie 1A

What motivates me the most to learn is interactive classes. I also believe that an inspiring successful teacher can inspire you because if a teacher constantly is saying they're broke or they don't get paid enough. Even though they went through 4 years of college it's gonna make you not wanna learn and make it seem useless.

1/25/2023 11:01:19 am

I agree a lot of times you'll get a teacher who genuinely doesn't care for the success of their students and it can be very hard to be motivated when adults around you are constantly complaining about something they worked foe. Teacher now have no real connection with their students and the few that do really make the learning experience more inviting.

J Melgar 6B link
1/25/2023 07:52:29 pm

I agree. Teachers don't always say the right things and that could cause a student to lose motivation and interest in the class. Teachers need to learn to push their students, but of course in a good way, not by assigning so much work. Having a positive can help a student become motivated in class/ school.

G. Calderon Batista 2A
1/26/2023 10:44:48 pm

yes, i agree because if you have a teacher who just hands you stuff & expects you to learn the material on your own thats not going to motivate you. I like teachers who think outside of the box with different activities to help kids learn

Khamari Caldwell 1A

lollll, I agree with you teachers often don't realize how much power their tongue can hold when talking and reacting with their students. It can change our whole outlook on life even when we look at them. No one wants to constantly hear someone complaining about a career path that THEY CHOOSE.

A. Green 3a
1/27/2023 09:59:38 pm

I feel like in the article and motivated the students to learn more. Was the teachers, and how they were being challenged, but in a positive way that made them want to learn more. And also going to good school in a good surrounding, feeds your motivation to learn more. I for one never had a good surrounding, but I always loved being around my teachers, especially ones who wanted to help me learn more that made me want to come to school every single day to learn something new and expand my mind and knowledge of the world.

I agree with your comment since teachers and staff members play an important role in our development, they might as well make class enjoyable.

J Martinez 3a
1/25/2023 09:11:25 am

What helps motivate students to learn i think is when the teachers are really involved with us . When they are it makes it seem like they really like us and enjoy what they do and they are not here just to get paid and leave . And also friends around you can either motivate you to learn or the compely opposite .

Raheem Beck 5b

Gabriel Castaneda 2A
1/28/2023 07:10:11 pm

When teachers are involved in their students, it makes us feel like you are actually there for us and not just the paycheck that ya'll say is bad. Friends can motivate you because if you see them doing their work and them passing it could motivate you to do yours.

Leonardo 1A
1/25/2023 09:29:23 am

What I think helps motivate students could possibly be the subject. The subject may depend, I think it may be because the subject would be very easy to understand. Therefore, the student would have no problem working on it. Another thing which could help motivate the student is mainly with group projects, or perhaps assistance from others.

G Hernandez 3A
1/25/2023 11:41:01 am

I partially agree since we do enjoy doing what we love to do, which in this case are our subjects, but I think that it truly depends on the person.

R. Wits 7B
1/26/2023 11:45:54 am

I sort-of agree because the subject can bore someone but the type of classroom their in could change that. To me, the atmosphere and the people in there could change the subject from borish to amazing.

C. Torres 1A
1/25/2023 10:26:26 am

What motivates students to learn is good teachers, interactive classes, their dreams and ambitions to go to college. On top of those things students also have extracurricular, their friends, and family to help motivate them to learn and grow.

I agree, teachers play a huge role in students motivate

M. Moore 7B
1/25/2023 10:51:45 am

What motivates students is the creativity, the similarity they may share with others. When people share similar situations they can tend to understand each other more. They tend to be more motivated when they have an actual relationship with their teachers and in their environment. Students motivation strives from what they want to achieve or who they want to become.

G Hernandez 3A
1/25/2023 11:36:07 am

What motivates students to learn goes beyond the overall school experience. So yes, I agree with the article. What motivates us to learn is our genuine interest, our hands-on activities, our ambitions, the feeling we get when we get a good grade on something we worked very hard on, etc. I believe that every student has the right to achieve and be motivated throughout school without any interruptions and/or disapproval in order to succeed.

F. Maltos 3A
1/27/2023 09:45:18 pm

I agree with you when you said “The feeling we get when we get a good grade on something we worked very hard on”, I can relate so much to that because every time I put so much effort into an assignment I am hoping to get a good grade. I always think of the phrase “Hard work pays off” and that is what motivates me to try my best when I do my assignments.

S Griffin 3a link
1/25/2023 11:36:31 am

What helps students feel motivated is being creative, listening to others that may want to share about their life. When people share with others, they might not understand because it's not something they are used to hearing. When they do hear, it might seem like they really enjoy what they do and how they.re living their life. But it can also help people around you, so it can motivate them to learn.

M Aguilar
1/25/2023 11:57:44 am

What helps students to learn is when teachers love their job and really interact with us. I feel like when teachers interact with us and explain things to us, the majority of the time students do end up learning. The more creative the teacher is with the lesson the more the students will be engaged with the lesson.

J Melgar link
1/25/2023 07:47:38 pm

I agree. There are teachers who don't put enough effort into getting their students engaged in the work, so that makes the student lose the motivation to do or learn anything in the class.

C Valdez 3A
1/26/2023 11:04:08 am

I agree, having a teacher like this is important for motivating students. Having a teacher that makes subjects fun and easy to learn is what makes students want to learn more. A teacher that doesn't like their job shows it when they learn and it makes the students not want to learn either.

f garnica 1st
1/27/2023 09:13:11 am

i agree with this because it it true the more you get to know your teacher it just make the class more fun and have activitys if the teacher doesnt put effort in it no one is going to like them or the subject.

K. Holt 6B
1/25/2023 02:46:29 pm

There are a lot of things that motivate students like an engaging teacher, fun group projects, students who help each other, etc but what motivates me is different. One thing that motivates me is for me and my family's future because i want to do better then my biological parents did. I want to get good grades to make it to college and get a good paying job so that i can give my little siblings a life i never got. The second thing that motivates me is being able to play sports because with a failing grade i will be sitting on the bench. Playing volleyball keeps me from falling in a hole that ill never get out of.

R.Waits 7B
1/26/2023 11:44:18 am

To be honest, I'm the same way with the motivations. I want to be better and have better for my family and myself. These are really great motivations that you have.

J Melgar 6B link
1/25/2023 07:45:21 pm

To me, what motivates students is having a good understanding and helpful teacher. I think this is the most important thing a student can have to motivate them. Other things that can make a student motivated about a class, can be having good friends and family to push them to do good, checking what the student feels most comfortable with doing in the class room or how they learn best. Building a connection can also help the student become motivated in school. Lastly not getting a lot of work, make it fun and easy for the student to enjoy doing instead of having them worry.

Alexia Ruiz 1A
1/27/2023 12:08:05 am

Having a "helpful teacher" motivates me too. I love when they ask everyone personally if they understand everything or if they have any questions because you can see they really want you to succeed. There's something about it that also makes me want to succeed.

D.Burris 5B

I agree, having a teacher who is willing to help me understand the material being taught will motivate me to get the work done.

Khamari Caldwell 1A
1/27/2023 09:08:24 am

A helpful teacher will always be a good motivation for me to keep doing my work. if a teacher is willing to help me at any time then i will always try my hardest on every assignment.

F. Maltos 3A
1/27/2023 09:35:36 pm

I agree with you because teachers should check what the students feel most comfortable with doing in the classroom or how they learn best. I have noticed that some students are worried or shy to go to their class because the teacher makes them do something that students are not comfortable with for example presenting in front of a class. As we all know, we all learn differently and teachers should know how each individual student learn best!

Zariya Boyce 1A
1/26/2023 08:38:18 am

I also think that what motivates students are their interests in a topic. I say this because no student wants to be in a boring class. Students love classrooms that are fun, and interesting. Students love classes where they can always smile, and laugh. Students love to be in classes where their desires of their future play a big part. An example would be like a student wanting to be a future fashion designer, therefore they would love to be in a fashion design/sewing class.

C Valdez 3A
1/26/2023 11:15:17 am

I agree, liking the subject in the first place is what makes students be motivated into learning the topic. Learning something students are passionate about will be the easiest motivator for them. Having a class that's fun is also really important because it makes them want to learn and motivates them.

R. Brown 7B
1/26/2023 01:12:29 pm

Something that caught my eye was when you said kids like to be in a fun, energetic class. That's definitely true because being in a class with lectures and boredom don't equal motivation.

m santos 7b
1/26/2023 08:56:54 am

The article is a way for others to understand what motivates students to keep learning. They talk about the emotional connection they make to their education and how it has affected them in the long run. This is a reminder that we need to find the motivation to keeep coming to school and learning. This motivation stays with them through the future because they are learning something that engages or they are actually interested in.

R. Brown 7B
1/26/2023 01:10:12 pm

I see what you mean. this article definitely reaches a broader audience and shows them how to motivate students and what better helps in these scenarios.

Raheem Beck 5B
1/26/2023 09:32:29 am

In the first part of the article they talk about how intresting and exciting the teacher might be. When you have a teacher that switches things up and you have a relatioship you tend to be excited to attend their class and listen to watever they have to say. Also they talk about getting into college and just having good grades is their motivation. They have a standard of life they want to live so putting the work in now to go to the college they believe will help is wht gives them that drive.

i agree teachers play a big role on how students are motivated to learn especially in high school students dont really have any motivation for school while even at school

C Valdez 3A
1/26/2023 10:59:48 am

The article lists what motivates students into learning and mentions that a passionate teacher is something that can motivate students into learning and I agree, having a teacher that can make anything interesting to learn about is important for schools because no one wants a teacher that bores or complains a lot. A genuine interest in the topic as well as a willingness to learn are also really important reasons to what motivates students because if you want to learn it makes school a lot easier to go through. The article also mentions that preparing for the future is another motivator for learning and I think it's the most important because schools were made to prepare you for when you get a job or go to college as well as teach you.

This article tells us what actually and genuinely motivates students to learn and what demotivates them to do better. Teachers that get on their level without degrading and fully understates where their students are coming from, invited them to be motivated in schools. The article also gives examples from students that experienced certain situations that affected them. A lot of people already enjoy spending time in classes and learning, it just is the atmosphere that staff and the schools surrounds themselves in.

What motivates students is interacting in the classroom. Students become discouraged when teachers lecture all class periods. It causes students to zone out and not become interested.

I completely understand where they were coming from in the article. These are the things that motivate me to learn because these are some of the basic needs of me doing my work. A teacher that listens and isn't too strict as well as interactive classwork so i'm not sitting around the whole time being bored by a lecture is something that is very pleasing as a student.

K. Romero 2A
1/26/2023 11:17:23 pm

I agree, having a teacher who is not to strict can also motivate me. having a safe environment helps learn and feel comfortable asking for help when needed. Also seeing a teacher who cares not just about how students grades makes them look and actually care how their students are doing is a big motivation to keep going in school.

A. Tindle 7b
1/27/2023 02:54:23 pm

I totally agree with you. There is a big debate with the fact that teachers think their class can be super boring, as well as how they teach, and they will still have passing students. Thats why I appreciate teachers that really try and understand their students learning styles, and act on it.

A. Sanchez 5B
1/26/2023 01:08:41 pm

The article talks about how students had a solution to motivate them to learn.I have never considered myself an avid learner, school has always bored me to death but it also depends on the environment of the room most of the time I walk in a class everyone has their head down on their phones or just look like they dont want to be there. Until I joined a specific club I always feel a welcoming environment when i walk in there, there is never a boring time in that class and i have met nice people.

G. Calderon Batista 2A
1/26/2023 10:55:58 pm

What motivates me personally is teachers who actually engage with their students on a more personal level. Teachers who treat their students like their "family" and not just students that they have to teach to make a living. I don't really have a lot of things that motivate me to learn besides teachers engaging in activities that will help me learn while not being boring because i know sometimes it has to be boring. Seeing people who are young, successful, and financially stable that dont have to worry about certain things because they put in the hard work and dedication to get where theyre at young motivates to learn & be better in school & also challenge myself.

K. Romero 2A
1/26/2023 11:13:34 pm

I completely agree with you. teachers should make the effort to get to know their student better. making activities based on what their students like is also a way to engage students. But comparing yourself to other people is also not a good way to challenge yourself because at some point you will convince yourself what you are doing is not enough

K. Romero 2A
1/26/2023 11:09:12 pm

according to the article what motivates students to learn is good teachers. some teachers may be good at teaching but are horrible at encouraging the student to learn and both play a big role into education. Also students can tell when teachers are not into the subject they are teaching, and that discourages a student big time. Hands on activities also help students get motivated. not all students are visual learners and having hands on activities helps them. a teachers responsibility is to get to know their students and what way they learn best and if they can not do that then they have failed at their job.

K.Williams 3A
1/26/2023 11:55:42 pm

The article is stating what motivates students to learn. In my opinion , teachers who introduce collaboration but also set expectations for the classroom is a way of motivating kids to learn. Other things like positive relationships can encourage students , motivating them as well as promoting their desire to learn. Sharing personal information about your family or interest outside of school will also motivate children as they feel a connection.

I think this article was really interesting and could be really informative to teachers who struggle with their students. I also liked how they asked students what opens them up to new knowledge and they gave honest answers. I feel like most kids feel the same way they do because I've heard similar things at my schools. Hopefully a struggling teacher comes across it and tries to appeal to her students and they end up learning.

KIds now days don't learn just by readig a text book and thats all a lot of teachers do. Setting my own goals is important to me to because it makes me want to accomplish them more. This article is a very interesting article because i have a very similar perspective on this, i hate the fact that we attend school for things that are not relevant plus we have no interest in anything that we learn unless we find is valuable. In the article it says that students who are motivated to learn are the students who actually want to learn something new. It says students who are open to knowledge will learn then the ones who aren't. I actually agree with this because in class i do notice that the kids who actually sit in listen are the ones to actually learn something and the ones who don't are not. Another point that the article says is about how the teachers can inspire their students. I agree with that as well because i believe with the right teacher anything can be learned.

D.Sparks 1A
1/27/2023 10:49:38 am

The ones who don't sit in there in listen may just not be motivated to learn, or they might not be intrigued in how they are learning. Just because someone isn't listening doesn't mean they do not want to learn, it could just simply mean the class isn't as hands on as it needs to be.

A. Tindle 7b
1/27/2023 02:49:12 pm

I agree with you Sparks, because it could get really agitating hearing the whole "just listen thing" as if all peoples brains function the same. Learning is different for everyone, and some people could just sit there and listen and get it, others might need a little more help, and thats okay.

This article explains exactly what motivates most students to learn. Most students who believe that their teacher is a good teacher and loves participating in the class because it is interactive, are more motivated to learn then others. However, people's futures and their personal goals are the biggest motivators because most students need a purpose to engage in what they are learning.

In the article "What Students Are Saying About What Motivates Them to Learn" Mr. Malesic is trying to break down what motivates students to be open to learning new things. In the article "What students are saying about what motivates them to learn" talks about what gets a student to feel motivated in learning, they give examples and the one that stood out was having great teachers, having great teachers is very different than not having great teachers, students will prefer great teachers that interact with the whole class making them want to participate and feel motivated to learn more not like a quiet class with out any interaction.

M. Espino 7B
1/27/2023 06:35:44 pm

In the article "What students are saying about what motivates them to learn." they talk about how having great teachers, interactive classes, setting their own goal and having an interest in the subject are all very motivating to many students. I think teachers have a major role in making some of the stuff they teach interesting to most. Many students cannot and simply do not want to sit there for a long period of time learning something they are not interested in. Some of the students might be more "hands on" learners, like myself. Also getting good grades and people being proud of you, no matter how little it is, is very motivating to most students, because they might not have someone there to tell them "I'm proud of you."

In the article “What students are saying about what motivates them to learn” talks about different reasons students are motivated to learn. What motivates students to learn is having a teacher that interacts with their students and actually care about students as an individual. What motivates me to learn is when I’m in a class and the teacher is very engaging in teaching us and that’s what gets students to come to class everyday and to learn something new. I also think that if we had interesting classes we will be willing to learn about that topic. At the end of the day what motivates all of us to learn in school even if we are not interested in the topics is to graduate and get our diploma because of all the hard work we payed off in those school years!

D. Costilla 5B
1/27/2023 10:46:06 pm

I definitely get where you're coming from. I also get motivated whenever a teacher is very engaging in teaching. It makes me want to learn more, and get to see their point of view in things. In this article it talks about the different type of ways a student gets motivated to learn. They mention how students mainly get motivated to learn when they have great teachers, and a genuine subject they are interested in. I agree with the points they mentioned in the article. As a student, I tend to feel motivated to learn when my teachers make it fun and interesting for us. I feel like it really does make a huge difference, Especially when they mention having a genuine interest in a subject, for me in this case it would be health science. I've realized that I genuinely have this drive to learn more about medicine, since I want to work in the medical field in the future. Having this drive and goal pushes me to want to learn more in school, it inspires me to try my very best. Which is why I agree with the points they mention in the article.

When a genuine teacher try her best to push him/her students to succeed in the classroom, eventually, the students are going to try their best in the classroom as well because they see that the teacher actually cares. So, its like saying, " If you'll try with me, I'll try with you. "

What truly motivates a student is their concern for their future. if the student wants a good life after high school or college they will put in the work to achieve it. What motivates a student to achieve excellence to school is an engaging classroom. Teachers who connect well with the students often boosts their motivation. With this type of connection, the student will be able to understand the teacher a lot more.

Teachers really motivate students if they connect with them and talk to their students under any circumstance. Students want to go to school and be safe and acquired for meaning that they want to be looked after and make sure that they are okay and well. Teachers that make sure that their students are good are the teachers that make students motivated and make the students actually want to go to class and learn.

Student’s motivation to learn could be influenced on how they interact or the lesson being taught. The way teachers present the information could grab their attention and encourage them to be included. Others ideas or goals to strive can also positively effect how they want the future or thoughts to come.

What motivates students to learn i think is to explain the learning in a form we can relate too. Like with stories show it in a movie or something. Another one is to really get to understand the kids you have in your class understand if they need more help and help when asked to for help.

B Wilkinson 6B
2/7/2023 11:02:31 am

This article talks about what motivates students to learn. I feel like the most prominent thing that students are really drawn to is a teacher that cares about the kids and makes her job fun instead of complaining about stuff. My math teacher last year was a very fun and cool teacher and wasn't strict as long as you did your work and went through the notes with us. It is also good when a teacher can slow down at students requests and help them with their problems. But it is the little things that matter when it comes down to students wanting to actually learn in the classroom.

M. Mitchell 6b
2/7/2023 11:08:52 am

The entire point of the school system is to encourage students to invest in an education. The rest is up to the kid themselves to actually put in the effort. I've found that most kids who lack motivation in school are unsure about their future, and therefore have no where to direct their attention.
