The picture above sums up the culture and trend of the modern society and new generations. People are addicted to it just like drugs, the picture can be seen as a person taking a shot of heroin which is highly addictive. The heroin in the picture is compared to social media to show that it is addictive.

Everyone knows that heroin is extremely addictive, and it couldn't be more accurate to compare social media to heroin here. Once people are addicted, they will feel uncomfortable without drugs, and people nowadays will be really uncomfortable without the Internet and social media either. This is a sad truth that human beings are now completely dependent on the Internet. We have to rely on, but not too dependent on, sadly, lots of people are unable to find that balance line until now.

I think that's exactly what it is. I've always wondered how it became this addictive and vital to the society. If it was a decades ago, comparing the internet to drugs would be totally ridiculous, however these days it is very sensible to compare them, considering how much the society is based on the internet.

It is very shocking to see that people nowadays depends their "value" on numbers. From time to time, social media becomes more and more addictive as more people use it and more content has been posted on it.In the end of the day, everyone needs to decrease how they are dependent to social media.

Janice (Ap Lit)

I really liked the point you brought up. I don't think it's actually the content within social media itself that has people addicted, rather it's the "numbers". It's the attention you get online through likes and whatnot, and the feeling of being ostracized if you don't conform that keeps people hooked onto the internet.

Brendon (creative writing F)
9/8/2021 05:06:17 am

The "numbers" you mentioned is comparable to games like popcat or cookie clicker, where the source addiction is coming from the ever increasing numbers, more so than the actual clicking. In that way, clicker games are similar to social media; they're both addicting and a huge waste of time.

Peter (block c)

YESSSS Let me dive into this topic more because it's so interesting that you brought it up (as I am one of the millions of victims)... People are soo obsessed with their self-worth, self-image, and societal acceptance to the point where social media CEOs are the richest people in history, which is although immoral for some but understanding when we mention it as an inherent human nature. "Shocking" won't be the word I would describe this long standing greed for fulfilment but "pity" would be a perfect word for it. Don't think of this as an excuse but the new generation really don't have a choice but to be totally absorbed by social media, it's the new era's way of socializing, shopping, making profits, checking news, etc., whether we like it or not, social media is here to stay regardless of its harmful side effects.

Social media even more so than other forms of entertainment can be addicting like drugs are. However I would like to point out this issue is often overblown by typically those from the older generations. Social media is also one kind of power because when they have lots of followers than the others, they know that their voices are louder than the others which means they have more power so when people get more followers or likes, they want more and more and never be enough.

It is very unbelievable, but it is also very realistic. When you are posting every little thing that you have or encounter in your life onto your social media account, you might miss the chance to enjoy that instant moment because you were just focusing on social media.

An overly exaggerated representation of how people are getting addicted to social media. The irony in this picture is that people who usually post this, are the same kind of people the picture is talking about. I do agree that people are relying more on social media, however, to go as far as to say "addicted" is blowing things out of proportion.

We were born in a generation full of advanced technologies and social media is also one of them. Social media are interactive technologies that allow us to create, share, and exchange information with other people. Because of social media, we're now can access more information within one click which is much more convenient, however, because it is so easy, many people start to addict to these social media such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and Snapchat. When people are addicted to social media, they might only care about what is on their screen but not what's around them and this might cause a negative effect on them.

Christine (Creative Writing, Block F)

Not only do people only care about what's on their screen, people nowadays would use social media to avoid things such as conversations too, this is slowly making us harder to communicate to each other in real life, which could be a sad thing for newer generations.

I agree with you on the fact that using social media unhealthily is causing harmful effect to people, as right now, nearly every information that you want to search for are online, and people could access it in just a few click. And as a result of those kind of ease, we grew reliant on them, distancing us from our real life. Therefore, we should try not to get too attached toward social media or else we will get controlled by them.

This drawing portrays a picture representing what social media feels like to the society now. As we can see, the artwork contains many different popular medias shown as forms of needles, injecting it into a hand. The hand is also in black and white, meaning the focus is on the medias. I believe that this could relate to how social medias are said to be like drugs, once we are addicted to it, it is really difficult to not want to stay on the media.

I found what you said about the colors really interesting. The black and white contrasted with the colorful needles, help to further convey the idea of how toxic social media can be. Your attention to the color scheme of this image is intriguing, I haven't taken the colors into consideration myself. c': But yeah, now that you mention it, I also see how everything other than the hand was of relatively brilliant shades. The drawing above represent a modern day drug that we are indulging ourselves in, Social Media hence the needles that are injecting into the arm. The monochromatic arm represent the society or ourselves as "dull" and "boring" therefore we as a society relies heavily on the "drugs" to cope with our monotonous life. Social Medias are being compared to drugs because of it's addicting and unhealthy nature, at first glance posting pictures or vlogging may seem harmless but in recent years studies have shown that those who spend a lot of time on social media platforms tends to have a higher rate of reported depression.

Woahh, so many good points thereee... I like how you look at the tiny details of the picture and interpret the symbolic meaning behind it. Aside from others who mention about how bad social media is to the society or how it's "an addicted drug" for the new generation, you point out the reality of the fact that social media IS the savior of life, even if it is in the short term by using color comparison. Adding on to your reply, this is also a representation of human nature: preferring short term benefits rather than devastating, long term costs.

This picture may just be a reference to how addictive social media applications are, but it actually makes me think about the addiction to fame instead. I've seen how people change with even the tiniest bit of fame granted to them. When they realize that the content they're posting is gaining them more followers, they start posting more of that specific type of content. The more fame they start to gain, the more desperate they are to hang onto their fame, or make a bigger name for themselves. Like how the person is injecting everything into themself at once, people who gain fame from social media platforms tend to bite off more than they can chew and it's going to be the cause of their downfall.

This picture shows us that people are so addicted to social media in the 21st century. As time went by, I saw more and more people swiping their phones as I go everywhere. There are good and bad things about social media. From my perspective, the image symbolizes how addictive social media are and how people perceive media platforms as an essential factor in our life. The picture uses different social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram to imitate how necessary for an individual to intake media content daily. As social media becomes a fundamental component, people tend to value the amount of likes, follow, or comments and rely on them.

The picture shows that people nowadays are addicted to social media, and there are so many platforms such as Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. Sometimes they care about what people see them or think about them in social media than people around them. Some people are also trying to be someone they are not to please the others on social media, they are about the amount of likes or views they got and that would just worsen their mental health. Of course, almost everyone, including me, would infer the image as the addiction of the new generation to social media. The harmful effects and the short term happiness it brought to the society. But I would like to discuss about the cause of this situation stemming from the surroundings, which leads to the question of why drug addicts are situated near each other? That goes to the same to why people go on social media in the first place: to connect with one another; However, what made them stay is the conformity and the interconnected relationship netizens have on one another, eventually making it a norm to our society.

It's self-evident that we are getting more and more addicted to social media. Different people hold different ideas toward this phenomenon, however more people would probably hold an oppose opinion when it comes to its pros and cons. In fact, it's not only that we use these social media to socialize with other people, lots of internet celebrities rely on these platform to make money, not to mention those organizations that also use these platforms to spread out awareness or ideas. Especially now that we're under COVID-19 pandemic, the social media became an efficient tool to connect with your audiences, your consumers, your friends and your family. Standing on these point of views, are social medias really that bad? The answer somehow got vague again. However, does it change the fact that we're getting too addicted to the social medias? Not really. Just like what it shown in the picture, social media gradually became an addictive drug that we can't live without it, just try to imagine your life without those social medias——it's hard to imagine, isn't it? Mixed Ink

Mixed Ink is our class blog, the window into our souls. It was designed to improve students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills by giving them a platform to provide meaningful content based on their interpretation of what they see.

Although the students receive a grade based on a rubric for completing this assignment, they are not graded on complexity of thought. This is a place where students of all levels can freely, confidently and creatively express themselves and their opinions in a nonjudgmental platform. They are required to respond to and critique each other, but degradation, slander, lewdness, etc., will not be tolerated.
