I think Florida would be more prepared then Houston becausethey were able to be notify a head time and have more time to prepare themselves .Unlike people in Houston it was a short amount of time that's why so many people got hurt and stuck because they was not notified and they couldn't be prepared . But I do believe it will be worse then Hurricane Harvey because Floridia is below sea level but I don't think a lot of people will get hurt .

I'm with you there, I think some of the people in Florida don't understand how a hurricane is. I feel like it will be worst than Harvey, because Florida is so tropical and is already full of lakes and swamps. There is going to be major flooding, so for people's safety they should leave the cost at the lest.

I do not believe that Florida is ready. No one really knows what the storm is capable of. They might be a little prepared , but u are never to prepared. The civilians might be prepared because they see it on the news. I dont know about economically wise.

Imani Florence 1st
9/7/2017 07:41:20 am

I believe some of the civilians will be prepared because they have probably purchased supplies. Mentally they will not be. Having to evacuate your home due to possible destruction is hard to process already. It will be even harder to process when you see the damage following the disaster. .

I agree with you,but we have seen what the hurricane is capable of from video clips of it hitting the carribean islands.

Imani Florence 1st

I predict the same events will take place with Hurricane Irma just like Hurricane Harvey. By events I mean, emergency evacuations, people walking through water, an urgent need of supplies, people sleeping in shelters, gas prices sky rocketing, and the implement of the National Coast Guard. I believe the economy is ready for the financial damage of Irma because our country spends billions of dollars on miscellaneous expenses. On the other hand, I don't think residents or the oil industry is ready for Irma. I say this because no person and or company is ready for the financial responsibility of a major natural disaster. As a whole, I don't think we are ready nor do we care about being ready because we are not experiencing what is going on in Houston or what is about to happen on the East Coast. This event will impact Florida and the rest of the United States because it will cost billions of dollars to rebuild.

The economy is not ready for the Hurricane I disagree. The economy still has to covered the damages that were done in Houston, another hurricane will most likely have less casualties due to the time to prepare, but all in all people can not move their houses and will only be able to evacuate with a few of their most valuables. Also, Florida has resources such as oil and fruit that are highly valuable and not protected from the hurricane, therefore meaning the cost to restore the resources alone will be expensive along with the houses and buildings such as the NASA cormperation.

Ty Smith 6th

It doesn't mean we don't care we just can't help Florida out if we haven't seen the damages yet.

It sucks how recently big hurricanes have been hitting the US. First Hurricane Harvey, now Irma. Irma's going to impact the US and Florida dramatically (i think). We're not ready for this hurricane, especially not Florida, it must suck for them. I've heard the hurricane is going to be huge, might cover all of Florida. It's probably going to disrupt water supply for months. I predict it's going to land this weekend, possibly Saturday. It's going to drop Florida's economy by a ton. It's going to be sad to see, how people are suffering there. There's probably a lot of supply that the US depends on there, so it's going to not only impact Florida, but all of the USA.

Also some people are afraid to leave their home and decide to stay and thinking they can handle this hurricane but they can't. Hurricane can you Irma is the scary sight. I predict that when the hurricane hits people will be scared but content. They will be content because I feel like the people are prepared. On the other hand I'm not sure that they're all industries ready because of the current gas shortage. on the other hand, I'm not sure that they're all industries ready because of the current gas shortage. As for the rest of the world, I think that we are willing and ready to help. This hurricane will most definitely give Florida a setback, however I know that they will persevere.

J. Maple 1st
9/8/2017 08:15:36 am

Content? Scared and content are feelings that are worlds away from each other. The amount of power that has been predicted for Hurricane Irma has went past the most extreme category, and a new one had to be created. People will be scared yes, but no one will be content with their homes and lives destroyed by forces they can't change or control. The people are prepared, but are they ready?

C. Villanueva
9/8/2017 10:27:04 am

I agree that the hurricanes are a scary sight but I disagree about them being prepared. People just don't get how serious these situations can be because if they knew the reality of how hard it could hit, they would leave the state (if it's true about it covering all of Florida) Would you let yourself die on purpose? Staying and questioning the power of these hurricanes is technically the same thing as questioning whether you should risk your life or not.

Z. James 1st
9/8/2017 07:30:48 am

I predict that Irma will cause some major damage to Florida because as it ita arriving it is getting even bigger and stronger. I believe that the people in Florida are ready because they were alerted to evacuate as soon as Irma was announced. The economy more than likely they will be ready, they may be planning it out or already came up with a plan to fix it. It's oil industry might be tampered with because yes they were informed early however gas is from ground and they might have took a few weeks or a month to actually get that situatiom figured out. I think in Texas no because we are still recovering from Hurricane Harvey along with the troubles it gave America. In Florida homes will be destroyed, along with businesses, and other infrastructures and the oil companies might be destroyed creating another rift in our economy.

I. Chancellor 1st period
9/9/2017 11:54:51 am

With all honesty, Hurricane Irma will cause damage to Florida because that is exactly what it is going on in the Caribbean right now. I do agree that they are ready because they were evacuated, but however, they are kind of not because if Hurricane Irma is a very powerful storm, they can lose their house or place of work, throwing their daily lives off balance. Regardless of them planning ahead of time, their economy can still take a hit, if international known attractions are destroyed, like Disney World or Miami Beach, due to them losing profit because of them paying for repairs and people not going there. By the same token, its oil industry would be tampered with, do to them trying to get to the gas and oil, without causing an hazardous environment. In conclusion, I hope that Hurricane Irma does not do Florida, like Harvey did Texas and I pray that homes, and businesses there in Florida, do not get destroyed and create another rift in our country.

J. Maple 1st

After Hurricane Harvey, the aftermath for Houston and the surrounding areas was devastating. People lost their homes and and their everyday lives were disrupted. The devastation was great because Houston is not a city that is built to withstand natural disasters. However, Florida experiences storms all the time because of their proximity to one of the largest bodies of water. Florida is prepared for hurricanes, but Hurricane Irma has been placed in a category that has never existed, so the amount of damage it will cause will be greater than anything anyone could have prepared for. A sound infrastructure is key if we don't want to experience the amounts of economic damage and shortages Hurricane Harvey caused. We can never be ready for damage of natural disasters, because of their unpredictability and their strength.

I honestly think that Florida won't be ready. No one can really be "ready" for a natural disaster because we won't know what it's capable of until it hits. I feel that a small amount of people may prepare themselves with supplies or what not, but the thought of evacuation or possible death can really ruin a person's mentality. I think a lot if people will be hurt in Irma's wake, but it isn't anything new.

I don't think anyone is ever ready to get hit by Mother Nature. If you've never experienced it then you don't really think it's going to happen to you, or even so you don't think it'll happen to you again so you don't really prepare to lose everything. The economy isn't ready to deal with so many hits towards our country, the oil industry can try to be prepared but the news worry us so much we over exaggerate and over due it such as the gas situation we had. Many of our cars last a week without the need of filling up the gas tank everyday. It's going to hit Florida and the US hard because as I said, we either over exaggerate or we dont exaggerate enough thinking it won't reach us.

When Irma gets to Florida, it will leave behind a devastating scene. Harvey was extremely destructive and to think that Irma is an even stronger hurricane is worrisome. Florida will not be fully prepared, no scientist can say how much damage any hurricane is going to make. The residents in Florida will have to hold on to hope until this passes. As a nation, the U.S. will suffer. Various aspects of our economy alone is tied heavily to Florida.

After Hurricane Harvey, the results in Houston and other cities were devastating. Houston was never prepared to encounter a storm like Hurricane Harvey. Meanwhile, Florida is a state that has encountered dangerous storms because of its location. However, this storm is something Florida has not dealt with before. I do not think all people in Florida are prepared for this storm so all residents should immediately evacuate. Although some may not have financial leniency to leave their home behind for destruction, it is the best thing to do. We would be effected because the things that we get from Florida will be off line for a while.

Irma has been named as a category five storm with wind speeds of 185 miles per hour. When Irma hits land, it will leave a devastating impact, as it will leave damaged everything that it approaches. Nobody is truly ready to have something that was worked hard for go down the drain from one day to the next. Like Hurricane Harvey, people were found dead because they stayed behind or did not leave on time. It affected the cities that were not impacted physically by the hurricane, by limiting the oil/ gas source. Hurricane Irma is responsible for 10 deaths as of now. Hurricane Irma will not only hurt people in the United State it will also hurt Puerto Rico, Haiti, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. The damage caused by Hurricane Irma on these countries does not compare to the damage caused by Harvey. Many news outlets describe Hurricane Irma “tearing” through these islands, one can only imagine what they are going through right now. There is a fine line between being prepared and being ready, and this can be applied to any situation. In terms of natural disasters, areas that are near oceans will obviously be prepared for these kind of storms, but will they be ready? The difference between Houston and Florida is that Florida could obviously handle hurricanes better, but unlike Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma is a much more powerful storm. If or when Hurricane Irma hits Florida, I feel as though the damage will be worse than Hurricane Harvey’s. Irma is one of the strongest hurricanes, with winds up to 185 mph. When Irma hits land it will be devastating event, leaving so much damage to Florida. I don't think nobody is ready for a natural disaster, it will change peoples lives drastically. The economy will be affected when they have to fix everything, many companies that supplie other places will be close for time because of the damage. The oil companies can try to send resources but that would not last long time. No we are not ready, even though the hurricane is not coming directly here it will affect us with thr lack of resources. I think that the impact that it will have in Florida is going to be drastically for families, people are evacuating because they don't want to be harm during the natural disaster. The United States might think now how is that things can change, and if something happens in some place near it doesn't just harm the people who live there, but also everyone around it.

After seeing all these hurricanes I'm beginning to think that this is a WWE triple threat match only difference is , nature is the triple threat . I think when Irma hits it going to be devastating and have a larger impact on the economy. Irma is predicted to be worse than Harvey by winds that 150mph . I believe that after the affects of Harvey and how the people Houston handled it that Florida should have some idea of how to go about it . Hopefully most of the people have already evacuated since they were warned way ahead of time . I don't believe the economy is ready for another hurricane after Harvey . We had a gas problem two days after Harvey hit which caused a lot of chaos and there's no telling what will happen now when Irma hits .
I honestly don't know if we're ready because of how badly we handled the Harvey hurricane . This is going to hit us hard because America's back fall system is horrible . Not only will it hit us hard but the damage it causes will hit Florida even harder .

Hurricane Harvey was a devastating category four hurricane. It left dozens of people without homes and caused two of the main oil refineries in the US to shut down, as a result, northern Texas experienced a gas shortage. A new hurricane named Irma has developed and is heading towards Florida. Hurricane Irma is a category five hurricane the almost the size of Texas and people are concerned. I think the hurricane will cause major damages worse than Harvey. I would like to believe people are ready for Irma, however I do not think they are. If you look back at all the hurricanes that have occurred, the people were not prepared. The reason why is because in a way people are too optimistic about the hurricane. Don’t get me wrong, they have taken certain measures to prepare, however many do not realize the magnitude of the hurricane until the hurricane finally hits them. I think if they are not properly prepared, the problem of relocation from hurricane Katrina will occur again, and it will cause overcrowding in other cities.

Dustin Molo

When saying you are prepared for something one would have to take every possibility into mind. There is only one way to ever be prepared for a catastrophic event such as, a hurricane and that is to evacuate while there’s time. There’s always people who stay and think that can ride out a hurricane and be safe. Truth is that a hurricane is not the wave pool at hurricane harbor. There will be tons of water that is not able to be controlled by a button. Debris will be in the air at high winds and people will be hurt in the process if they chose to stay. It’s unwise to stay in the place of the occurrence of a hurricane because the possibilities are harmful in every outcome.

With all honesty, Hurricane Irma is going to flood the south coast of Florida, like Miami, Orlando, and etc and damage any state it goes through. I think Florida is ready because they are telling their citizens to evacuate and to me they are trying to keep the death rate low in this hurricane. The economy is not ready for another hurricane, due to the damage that it can cause and the money flow it can stop, especially for the south coast of Florida. Also, the citizens are ready, but kind of not ready because even though, they are evacuating, they still can become homeless, after Hurricane Irma. With all honesty, oil industry is not ready because they are losing workers, due to the workers evacuating, also, they can lose their business or businesses, if the oil catches on fire, after Hurricane Irma. Lastly, Hurricane Irma can make the state of Florida and America lose its income, due to the destruction of international known attractions, like Miami Beach, Disney World, and etc, and due to the damage of its oil refineries and business alike.

When hurricane Irma hits land the vast majority of Florida will be prepared. In the past few years the building codes have been rectified. By raising this standard more buildings will be prepared to brace the impending storm. However, while Flordia is arcitectualy safe. The responsibility of good judgment will determine their ability to thrive.

I agree with this statement because it is true that you grow up and you actually find out who you really are and you mature a lot and you really find out who you really are and what you really like so you can move on.

    Mixed Ink

Mixed Ink is our class blog, the window into our souls. It was designed to improve students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills by giving them a platform to provide meaningful content based on their interpretation of what they see.

Although the students receive a grade based on a rubric for completing this assignment, they are not graded on complexity of thought. This is a place where students of all levels can freely, confidently and creatively express themselves and their opinions in a nonjudgmental platform. They are required to respond to and critique each other, but degradation, slander, lewdness, etc., will not be tolerated.
