Presentation = Perception

3/12/2015

Picture
During the panel discussion in the auditorium that was held on Friday before Spring Break, one of the panelists, Robert L. Wagner, used an analogous comparison of eating your favorite meal from a china plate or a garbage can lid to explain the importance of presentation.

Instructions: Defend or challenge whether you agree or disagree that you have to "look the part" in order to get closer to success. Explain why or why not and include proof.

Respond in no more than 10 sentences and no less than five.
You must also reply to a classmate's post. You cannot post identical comments on different classmates' posts. Posting shallow comments such as "I agree" or "I disagree" will not earn you a passing grade. Make sure your posts address the reply that you are responding to.

I believe that presentation means a lot. The analogy of eating your favorite food off of a China plate or a garbage lid reflects why you need a good presentation. If you see something amazing in a bad package, you will be less likely to open, or even look at the gift inside. Give something some flashing lights and sparkles, and even if the present inside is not great, you will most likely look at it. Perception is reality, and having a good perception is having a great presentation.

Taylor Terry
3/14/2015 03:49:58 am

I agree that perception is reality, and you must prove yourself through the way you dress.

Cari Armstrong
3/14/2015 04:22:23 am

I disagree with Taylor you don't have to prove yourself to anyone just to get an opportunity your knowledge is greater than your dress or casual wear

Joe Dabney
3/14/2015 03:56:42 am

I agree with Jalechia because you want people to always have a good perception of you even if y'all do not know one another. A good perception equals a possible chance at better things, a bad perception equals no greater opportunities.

Arreon Rose
3/14/2015 04:03:59 am

I Agree you will most likely look at it. Perception is reality, and having a good perception is having a great presentation.

Marqueshia

I agree you cannot expect to become an successful person if your appearance doesn't reflect your a part of your success. Being an successful person come with different rules and regulations. Being successful can change your appearance physically, mentally & financially. With that being said you can't dress for failure if you want to be successful because there are will never be an good ooutcome of an failure.

Brittany Frazier
3/14/2015 03:57:58 am

I agree with Marqueshia because no one should expect to make it or be successful if your appearence doesn't match. Perception and presention are what people look for to promote you or to help you get to where you need to be. Never let the way you dress hold you back from becoming successful in the future.

Shannon simpson
3/14/2015 04:12:03 am

I agree this is so true

Johnny Johnson
3/14/2015 03:46:10 am

I agree with the quote because presentation is everything. The quote "never judge a book by its cover" is almost never in effect. Especially when you are in business or on social media. For example , if I were to come to school in a sweatshirt people would think that I a run track. But if I came in a business suit , they would think I am an investor or some one of that sort. So your appearance could either make you or break you.

Davion smith
3/14/2015 04:42:16 am

I agree with Johnny because no matter where you are people will always judge you off your appearance. Trying to get a job is sometimes hard because they go on how your dressed. dressing your best can make a huge difference in your success.

I agree, you cannot go out in the world looking any kind of way because presentation is key, and like marqueshia said, in life your goal is to build upon your success and that can come along with changes physically and mentally, there is no way you can look like a bumb, and work in a successful business, and obtain respect from others, in order to have the role you have to play the part as well

JACORIan lee
3/14/2015 03:48:00 am

I believe it means as in you rather have a good image as a China plate than the garbage can of a bad impression I agree 100 %...

Taylor Terry
3/14/2015 03:48:43 am

It is very true that you must present yourself well to become successful. Your presentation is the way people will perceive you, as far as colleges, employers, and customers. No one can read your mind or tell that on the inside you are educated and well mannered, you must show them by how you act and carry yourself. Success is attainable but you must be willing to show that you intelligent on the inside as well as on the outside.

Bazille Banks Jr.
3/14/2015 04:04:54 am

I agree with Taylor. In order to be successful, you have to advertise yourself. Your appearance and first impression are like a sales pitch. People tend to judge you by your appearance, so If you look trashy, people with think your are trashy. However if you look like a professional person, people will respect you a lot more.

James Smith
3/14/2015 04:12:38 am

This statement is true because the way you dress for a particular setting is how people will receive your oral character whether it's at a job, at school, at home, or even on the streets.

Brittany Frazier
3/14/2015 03:50:42 am

I agree with the statement, you should look the part to become successful. I say that because no one want an employee that doesn't even look like they work for a certain company. For example in the corporate office you see suite and ties, dresses and heels if you came to work in jeans you wouldn't be taken seriously. How you present yourself to others won't determine your success but it is always a good idea to dress for the part.

Antwon Portley 3rd
3/14/2015 03:50:46 am

I do agree with this statement because if you do not prepare for success you will not have success. Having a successful mindset and preparation will not allow you to dress to fail.

Joe Dabney
3/14/2015 03:53:36 am

Presentation is half the battle when doing a lot of things, for example a job. When you walk into a job interview and you have on sweats and a muscle shirt you instantly slim your chances of getting that position. Let's say another man comes in with the same level of qualifications as you but he's dressed in a nice suit, more than likely he's gonna get hired over you. Why? You might ask. It's fairly simple, most people assume what you are like based on how you look, so if you go into that job interview looking trashy they will assume that you are lazy, don't care about your appearance, which could lead to them thinking you won't care about the company's appearance which could be bad for them. Therefore I conclude that presentation is everything

Bazille Banks Jr.
3/14/2015 03:54:40 am

You only get one time to make a first impression, and your first impression is going to determine how people perceive your character, behavior, and your general personality. If you make a positive impression, people will see you as professional, competent, and capable. On the other hand, if you make a bad impression you will seem inept. For instance, when applying for a job, you don't come in casual attire, walk into the office, and begin an interview. Doing this will not lead you to getting the position. However, if you dress professional, greet your potential boss, and present yourself in a positive way, you will have a better chance of getting hired. All in all, presentation is a key ingredient in life that can and will determine your future, so it would behoove you to make a good and lasting impression on society.

Daniel kirk
3/14/2015 04:14:07 am

I agree with BaZille because you do only get 1 chance to make a good impression. You can't get a 2nd chance so make your first impression your best.

Domonique Fobbs
3/14/2015 03:57:49 am

Yes, I do believe you must look the part in order to be one step closer to success. Your first impression is everything in this world, and your appearance is apart of of your inpression on a individual. For example in sports, the well fit kid is always a favorite instead of the overweight kid or the honey kid, or in a interview, a man well groomed dressed nicely in a suit is a shoe in for the job if he's up against a man in wrinkled jeans with a tank top on.

E. Davis
3/14/2015 04:12:45 am

I agree with Dominique. Success is like sports. The best man, "the well fit kid" , is chosen over the get by man , "overweight kid" . The best always win.

I do agree with the statement because of the simple fact of whatever you put in you get out for example if you play any sports if you put in lazy work at practice you'll get lazy results back when its time to perform as Mr. Dabney said presentation is a battle, yet it is. in order to receive success you have to make successful decisions.

Destiny king 5th

Daniel kirk

The way you present yourself is very important. Because people judge you on the way you present yourself/Dress and talk. If you shagging in walk in a job interview, do u really think that the manager will hire you and someone with a nice dress shirt, nice slacks and a tie walks in. The manager is going to hire the person with the nice dress shirt and tie because he looks more presentable then the guy thats shagging looking for a job. So always dress the way you wanna be respected.

James Smith
3/14/2015 04:09:23 am

I would honestly say that I strongly agree with that statements simply because you can't dress yourself for failure and expect success to come knocking at your door. The author of this quote uniquely said it in his quote "You cannot climb the ladder of success dressed in the costume of failure." Simply saying that if you want a successful opportunity or a successful future, you have to either dress like or have that pure determination to get what you want. Verses you dressing for failure and not getting that clear understanding of what you want. My parents always told me that if you set yourself up for failure you're going to fail. But, if you set yourself up for success you'll get a successful ending. Setting yourself for failure can be the easiest thing to do because it's very easy to mess up. On the other hand it could be hard or easy towards success depending on home you approach the situation. Which is why I honestly believe that if you set yourself up as s failure you cannot expect a successful outcome.

Shannon Simpson

I agree because you have to dress to impress. They want someone well dressed and looking right to represent them or an company. Being successful can make a change for the worse or the better of a person. Being successful makes you look at thing differently. You want to present yourself in a nice clean cut way. So you will get the chance to make the impression you want so that you can also be successful

LaRoysha
3/14/2015 04:20:04 am

I agree because the way you present yourself is everything to a person you've never met before.

Eboni Davis
3/14/2015 04:09:54 am

In life , perception takes us along way. Your faith and success are determined on what kind of pants you wear, hair style you have , and even body language. One small mess up can be detrimental to your success. As childish as it seems, life functions this way. The only thing we can do is adapt. If wearing a suit and tie gets the job done then so be it. Therefore , I agree , without a doubt , that this quote is accurate.

LaRoysha 5th

I agree with the statement because the way you present yourself is the way the public will look at you. Presentation is everything these days. You cant go somewhere without wanting it and expect to get it. Success has to be on your mind when you step out wanting something. If it isnt then why even go out .

Cari Armstrong
3/14/2015 04:19:32 am

Your appearance doesn't mean you won't or can't become successful. Now I understand in this economy you have to look the part to be the part or to even get an chance in life. Presentation shouldn't matter just as long as you are able to fully be aware of the information you are giving and receiving.

Deranique Browning
3/14/2015 04:59:37 am

Your appearance should matter , no matter what the job is . Because no one wants half dressing workers not representing their company right . They want some one who can get the job done & present theirselves in a professional way .

Even those less fortunate that don't have much in their life become successful. even though many look at how one dresses and not at their talent, one can become successful. sucess is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose not what others think success is. success is what you make out of it, it is what you made out of it. it is the hard work that should be be more important not the way you are dressed.

Nicholas Masters

First impression is the important thing of yourself. It basically shows your TRUE character. Most people judge you off of that. Always be yourself and don't let no one bring you down off that.

Jonathan. Overstreet

Presentation is important in the world because 9 times out of 10 a person has made assumption about you. You need to dress appropriate so you Don't be judge on how you look.

Aaron Miranda 3rd period
3/14/2015 04:46:47 am

many judge by how one is dressed, their first appearance is everything. being you is an important part of one's self. it describes who you are an where you come from.changing they way you dress will not make you fail, your work does. being dedicated, responsible and worthy brings you success not appearance. do not let others tell you what you can and not do to be successful, you are the writter of your own story not them.

Davion smith
3/14/2015 04:47:32 am

I agree with the quote because many people are viewed by their appearance no matter what. People today are being stereotyped which no one should go through. If you go to a job interview under dressed or non presentable then you just basically eliminated yourself. People will judge you by the way you look whether it's cause of your hair, clothes , and possibly your color. That will never change so being confident and looking good will set you apart and help you move forward and becoming successful.

Dvarius wyatt

Deranique Browning
3/14/2015 04:55:03 am

I absolutely agree that you have to dress a certain way for success . First because the first impression is everything , so yes you should present yourself in an professional way . They don't want someone that can't carry theirselves in a classy way .

Keylan Grayson 3rd
3/14/2015 04:55:08 am

I agree with Davion, i believe if you present yourself a certain way, then opportunities will be available for you. If you dont present yourself in a good way and be sloppy, then your opportunities are limited

Ruben Rojas 5th
3/14/2015 04:57:25 am

In my opinion the quote is true because as human beings we follow are visual perception of things more strongly than the actual reality of things. For example if i was told to choose between a transparent flavored jello and a nice colorfull but tastless jello my subconscious would assume that the colorfull jello is more taste full than the other. Now this would conflict with concoius part of the mind which knows that the transparent jello is a better choice , ussualy the sub concius part has a bigger say in things so I would follow the my visual perception instead of the actual reality. This relates to successwhen you think about how the majority become succesful ; they get hired at good jobs. They get those good jobs because they were the best in colifications and how they present themselves. That is why I agree that in order to clim the ladder of succes you have to dress for succes.

Jocabed Cuevas
3/14/2015 04:58:28 am

Since as far back as we can remember we've all been taught to not judge a book by its cover, yet we're always told "dress to impress" especially when it comes to something as important as a career or job interview. In all honesty, the way one presents their selves has little to do with their ability to be successful. For example, a person completely covered with tattoos is usually mistaken in society by someone who is gang related or "up to no good", but let's dig deeper than the appearance and what might be found there is an incredibly smart surgeon at work. Presentation is meaningless when one is given the opportunity to prove themselves, and that is what should matter.

Hakkius Smith 4th Period
3/14/2015 04:59:03 am

I agree that looking the part in order to get closer to success is true because having the right look at the right time can attract people's attention that may pertain to what you're trying to succeed in. Meaning the way you dress May attract a successful person who could help you become successful. If you dress in a lazy way, people will think of you as a lazy person. If you dress as a successful person, you will be viewed as a person who takes care of they're business. Looking the part play's a big role in being successful.
