Poetry and the Planet

4/3/2018

April is National Poetry Month AND Earth Month. But here's the thing: not many believe that global warming is real. I do. Do you? We continue to be wasteful, over-consuming, greedy, gluttonous and self-absorbing. Have you ever thought for once what your actions are doing to the world?

Don't think you have an impact? A student said to me recently that one person can't change the world. Lies. Here are some "one persons" who did:

  • Malcolm X
  • The Buddha
  • Socrates
  • Jesus
  • Martin Luther King
  • Michael Jackson
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • Mother Theresa
  • Gloria Steinam
  • Mahatma Gandhi
  • Joan of Arc
  • Rosa Parks
  • William Shakespeare
  • Johan Sebastian Bach
  • Pablo Picasso

Should I go on? It just takes...one.

Directions: Watch the video above. Read the commentary after, then comment on the following: "What is one thing you WILL do this week to save the planet?"

1. INCLUDE: First initial AND last name AND class period.

2. Respond in no more than 10 sentences and no less than five.

CAUTION!! Do NOT embarrass me, yourself, your class, the English department, the school or your parents with tasteless, meaningless comments. This is for a grade.

One thing I will do this week to save the planet is do better with recycling . I find my self putting paper in the trashcans instead of putting paper in the recycling ben . I also want to help others disposal trash correctly. As I am driving down the street/ road I see a lot of litter people has thrown out of the vehicles , it causing pollution to our environment . Its killing many plants and animals and most definitely killing us humans slowly .Something has to change and I'm whiling to make a CHANGE !!!!

global warming is an ongoing phenomenon that is very much real despite how many people try to claim that it isn't. i don't just believe it because of my political views, but also because i have seen the effects it has had on wildlife and the weather. watching the news and hearing of the polar ice caps melting at a rapid rate despite being in an area where it is typical for it to be below freezing temperatures due to fracking for oil really changed my opinion on global warming. the only people debating against its existence are the businessmen and investors who are interested in getting more nonrenewable resources ho are willing to risk the lives of billions just to turn over a profit. to aid in saving the planet, i will continue throwing my trash away and recycling items that can be reused by others.

One thing I can do is pick up trash in the neighborhood. Because picking up trash can make the people breath better air.If you breath bad air it could mess up the lungs in your body causing you to most likely die.Everyone can make a difference in my opinion it does not matter if it’s just picking up a piece of trash. It Only Takes One Person To Change The World.

I can probably recycle more. Paper that I didnt use I can throw in the recycling bin. The earth is too polluted because of us. I might not do a lot but it IS something. Thought little, it's better than not recycling at all and polluting our planet. And maybe that little can save an animal's life. One thing that i could do to try to save the world this week is by doing some local community service around my neighborhood. This could be picking up trash and recycling them. I could also start reducing the amount of electricity i use so i can save power in my house. I could also start to reuse some of my old stuff instead of throwing them away, and polluting the earth with waste. I could start a website blog that educates the public on fighting against injustice in any shape or form. I could also start a club with some of my friends where we go around and help people and do nice things, like a helping foundation. Finally i could even start a fundraiser to help support people who can't afford healthcare for cancer patients.

One thing I will do to change the world is picking up the trash that go to our animals. We can not live without animals and if our animals die then we will die. And another one is cutting up trees. If we have no trees then we wouldn't have oxygen and without oxygen we can't breathe. We are destroying the world so much we don't even recognize it. I recently read an article that no matter how many incentives takes reduce their carbon footprint, it wouldn't help decrease pollution. Since 47% of carbon emissions are made by corporations. Reading this article made me feel discouraged on helping the environment. No matter how many times I recycle, or pick up trash along the highway, there is someone out there counter balancing my positive actions. I then saw the need to disperse information about the environment. So one action that I did to help the environment was signing up for volunteering at Earth Day Texas, I will hep my directing speakers to their appropriate locations.

That is a thought that constantly pushes people from helping out, "Why do anything if there is always someone counteracting our hard work and efforts?" That is a fair thought but it should be a force that drives people to push harder, there is no battle won without a counteracting force. When you see your work being unraveled you work harder and build it back up, then you need to find a way to get an edge on the counteracting force and push it back. Start informing people, putting facts into their faces, and showing them the scary and painful truth- fear is truly a strong force for movement. People don't pay mind to things when there are no immediate effects that they see immediately. We need to uncover that facade that everything is ok, then when the tarp is tossed aside you will see more people trying to jump in.

It is a great idea to disperse information about recycling. When we trash our earth we never think about the damage we cause until we see cold hard facts about global warming. After reading facts for myself, I am scared for the future, not just my future, but the future of the people who comes after me. What will life be like for them? If it is anything like scientist say, how do we not feel guilty for our actions?

One thing I will do this to help save the planet is recycle more often. Recycling reduces the waste thrown into piles in a landfill. At landfills they burn the trash to make room for more therefore letting fumes go up into the air, polluting the oxygen we breath. I read that it can take 450 to a 1,000 years for one plastic water bottle to decompose. Take into account that most water bottles are in landfills and not in recycle locations. If most plastic bottles were in recycled locations, we could reuse those bottles for something beneficial. For example, we could build homeless shelters or homes for people in in impoverished nations. So yes, do recycle.

Since I don't have a recycling bin of my own, my only option if to find a public bin. Now that I am thinking about it, I have trashed more water bottles than I can count. Since the water is another way we get 50℅ of oxygen. Not only do ocean help create oxygen but theirs animals that live in the ocean. Littering can go through a drain and into the ocean where any animal can think the trash is food but really it isn't and die. It messes up the food chain. I also want to encourage others to pick up trash so not trash can end up in the ocean.

We should save the mother earth so that our future generations can live in a safe environment. We can save the earth by saving trees, natural vegetation, water, natural resources, electricity, etc. We should strictly follow all the possible measures to control the environmental pollution and global warming. Everyone should plant more trees in the surrounding areas to curb the pollution and reduce the effects of global warming. About a week ago, I was on Instagram and I came across this post based on small actions people can take in order to save the planet, one step at a time. This made me research more about the affects of pollution and how it can impact the environment. In order to create a better environment, I want to start small by being more conscious about my use of water and recycling paper and water bottles instead of throwing them in the trash. I also want to spread the word to my parents—they are very guilty in littering and using an excessive amount of water. Becoming aware of the world around me and how our actions will affect our future makes me fear what will become, and even a small difference can start a change.

Something I can do to help the earth is reduce the amount of plastic bottles I use. If I use a bottle, I will find another purpose for the bottle. A plastic bottle can take 450+ years to decompose. Once it decomposes, it releases harmful chemicals that harm the environment. I will start using a reusable bottle to cut back on my plastic waste. If there is any need to use a plastic bottle, I will repurpose it to expand its life and prevent it from going into a landfill.

One thing I can do to save the planet is, pick up trash. With all honesty, when trash is on the ground, it kills grass. Then, trash can get into our lakes and oceans, causing innocent animals, to be harmed or even die. Also, trash in our lakes and oceans, causes the water to be polluted, making it not drinkable for humans and animals. In conclusion, I will pick up trash, to limit the harmful effects, of just leaving it there.

One thing i will do this week to save the planet is decrease the amount of energy consumed in my house. I found that the main CO2 emission source is electricity generation and heating, so reducing the amount of electricity my family and i consume will help decrease our carbon footprint. Either that or I will omit packaged/processed foods from my diet, since the process required to provide such foods also contributes in the emission of greenhouse gases. Regardless of what i choose to do for this week, it is merely a temporary fix. It is important to continue doing what i choose to actually make an impact.

One thing I’ll do this week to save the planet is recycle as much as I can . Everyday I go outside I see lots of trash that ends up on people’s yards because of littering . I’ll recycle more because I feel like landfills are running out of space so they just dump it in the ocean , and harm predators. People have recycling bins so they should put them to use today .

One thing I could do to save the world each day is to pick up trash I come across on the ground. Even though Its not necessarily my mess to clean, we should all consider it our responsibility to take care of our world. We have to stop casually destroying our planet without rehabilitation. The main reason to kill an animal is to eat, yet they are being cooked in ingredients that break down the body and kill us faster. For example, fish is said to be healthy than beef, however, because of the senseless hunting, common fish such as salmon are nearly extinct and fish are being injected with other genes to produce an artificial taste. In order to save the world I will began eating more vegetables to prevent an animal's life from being loss.

One thing I know I can do to help the planet is just to be more aware of what hurts it, and cut down on the little things. For example, keeping the water off while I brush my teeth instead of leaving it on when I’m not using it. You can save gallons of water that way. Like the poem says, a small flap of a butterfly’s wing can create a typhoon. Doing the small things like opening the blinds on a window instead of leaving the lights or using a refillable bottle will help tremendously in the long run. If I start those habits this week, I can help save the planet for the future.

One think I can do to save the planet is properly dispose of waste I see inside as well as outside. Littering is a huge problem especially in America in communities that take pride in the presentation of their people. If I as one person can start a chain reaction of keeping the community clean, I can help preserve the rest of what we have of Mother Earth. Liter is something that can be prevented with patience of waiting to throw trash away properly. Saving the earth one piece of trash at a time.

One thing I will began doing is using less air pollution. My friend already does this, but it is said that everytime you keep your appliances running without using them, energy is still being used. I will unplug all my appliances when not in use. I will also watch how much water I’m using. The worlds population is increasing rapidly, meaning clean water will soon be a problem. It’s better to help prevent it rather than help speed up the process.

I am going to stop littering. I often find my self throw something out while I’m in the car. I will stop bring food in the car. Also, I will keep a trash bag in my car just in case I do bring food in. The more trAsh I can keep off the streets the better our Earth will look.

The one thing I could do this week to save my planet is to recycle. If I recycle more instead of throwing my trash on the ground there will be no chance of any animal choking and dying because of what u had laying around. Also keeping our environment clean can help us breathe healthy air instead of filthy air.

i will recycle more often this week because i know that helping mother earth has a better impact on the world.Recycling some plastic will save some animals from getting hurt.Picking up trash will make other peoples jobs way easier.Picking up trash makes areas look way more appproachable.Doing all this can bring for value to our communities and environments as a whole.

one thing i will do this week to save the earth is try not to litter because a lot of littering that is already happening is already destroying our planet so i want to stop that by not littering leaving harmful stuff on the environment

I agree with you , this week i will also not litter. Any trash or anything i won’t just throw it on the floor or something. I will put it in the trash & just be lazy . I also want to not litter because i don’t want people to pick up after me like the people who do their job in cleaning up this environment for us.

One thing i will do this week is, i will recycle. I will turn off the water while i am brushing my teeth, i won’t keep it on so i won’t waste water. I will turn off the lights when i am not using them , so i but won’t waste electricity. I will go outside and enjoy human nature for what it is . The last thing & main thing i will do is i will, give to the poor and homeless & help them out however i can in my position.

    Mixed Ink

Mixed Ink is our class blog, the window into our souls. It was designed to improve students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills by giving them a platform to provide meaningful content based on their interpretation of what they see.

Although the students receive a grade based on a rubric for completing this assignment, they are not graded on complexity of thought. This is a place where students of all levels can freely, confidently and creatively express themselves and their opinions in a nonjudgmental platform. They are required to respond to and critique each other, but degradation, slander, lewdness, etc., will not be tolerated.
