Never Too Much

10/19/2014

You will always be too much of something for someone: too big, too loud, too soft, too edgy. If you round out your edges, you lose your edge.— Danielle LaPorte

In the new sitcom on ABC called "'black-ish," the father says he needs his family to be black, not "black-ish" and throughout the show, he revealed various cultural influences. What was the motive behind the reference and how do his values impact his family?

The show would affect his house because he is trying to change the way they act. It wouldn't be a point in having the show if it isn't a change. The whole point of the show is to make his family act black.

Michael link

I agree with g dub because of the name of the show is basically what the themes is.

Victoria Miller

You Said He Doesnt Want His Family To Act Black But I Wasn't Aware That you Can A Act A "Color" Actions Are Through People Not Their Skin Complextion And He Never Said "Act" In The Beginning He Wants His Family To Be Black Not Be Black ish .

He was saying that his family should act presentable. So that his family would look like a humble household. Instead of the stereotypical black family.

Alex Bennett
10/22/2014 01:07:43 pm

I agree, most parents want their family to act presentable in general, at least around other people.

Ariana Hughes-Crockett

The father is basically saying he want his family to act normal he try to say just cause they black they don't have to act black and wild how people already think we is he want his family to act like they got some sense.

Ariana Hughes Crockett

Tylen Hughes] I agree with his response because that's all the father is basically trying to say

Domenic Brown

the father wants his family to embrace their culture. As well as not to feel ashamed about their black heritage.the father also do not want his family to be seen as a stereotypical black family.

Tiara Jackson
10/23/2014 11:29:51 am

I agree , people think " Acting black " automatically means act ignorant but in reality I think the father means be proud of who we are and embrace our color. Overall African Americans shouldn't be ashamed of being black it's who we are.

He likes his family as there color but he wants them to act civilized, and mature to act along with other cultures.

His motive was to tell his family not to be the typical black person and what people look at the African American race to be. He used various cultures to influence, this may have gave his family a impact on how to be black not black-ish

Cassidy Wilder
10/24/2014 01:56:50 am

I don't think he meant that in a wrong way he was just stating that even though they're black do not act black in public or out somewhere special . I agree with him because even though we are black we shouldn't act our color at certain places .

Fatima Durham
10/24/2014 02:34:59 am

The father wants his family to know that just because they are black doesn't mean that they have to act ignorant like other cultures think they are , act like they have sense and be good examples for their culture even though they blacks had it the hardest in early Life.

Dondre Irvin
10/24/2014 03:31:10 am

I think his intention was to tell his family that he needs them to be "black" and embrace their black culture, which is why he used the cultural influences, as opposed to being "black-ish" and presenting themselves in the way that most of society already expects from them. I agree with Emmanual 100%. He was telling his family that he needs them not to be the typical "black-ish" acting family and the cultural influences were what put the impact on his family to portray themselves the right way.

Michael magee link

His intentions are to inform his family about not being the minority or the statistic black person but, to be proud and see the beauty in their own culture .

Trenton Miller
10/24/2014 04:29:08 am

He wants them to be comfortable with there skin. Know there culture and be knowledgeable about it. They should be know as a family who embraced who they are as a family.

Derrica Anderson
10/24/2014 08:41:58 am

Because the suffix "-ish" means 'having the characteristics of', I have concluded that the father wants his family not to display any characteristics of "black people". He revealed different cultural influences to manifest divesity within the household.

I agree, because different families have different beliefs but in this family he said expect them to act " black " and not blackish. I understand were he is coming from when he says that, maybe he would for them to carry thereselves well and not act blackish. Which one would typically describe loud, ignorant, ghetto, etc...

Halee' Boyd

I believe that the father just wants his family to know their culture and where they come from. The impact of this new knowledge of their history and everything that they have been exposed to should enlighten them that we can be more than what society sees us to be and that's what I think the father was trying to say when he made that comment.

Avier Ashby

I believe that the father is proud of being black but however, doesn't like what our black society is like.If you think of black people you think of ghetto, violent, rude, crazy and outspoken which is a stereotype . Therefore, the father in this article is not wrong for what he said others just took it as if he was being racists witch was not true at all.

Kenneth Atkins
10/24/2014 02:24:08 pm

Janesia Henderson
10/24/2014 04:24:23 pm

Avier I agree with you , because a lot of people judge the African American society. We present our selves as having no discipline or home training, and being ignorant. Therefore the father is proud of being black but just dislikes the actions us African Americans do.

Avier Ashby

Rauscher Manning

I think the father just want better for his family and think they should know we're their from. I think he have a feeling that his family isn't comfortable in there skin. And feel as and minority.

Maria Hurtado 2nd period
10/24/2014 02:55:58 pm

In the show "black-ish", the father shows his concern about how his family is ignoring the fact that they are a "Black" family. He is worried about how his family is more influenced by other cultures and what society does, rather than just doing what black families do. This affects his family by causing them to be discomforted by his belief and stating that they have a clear image about their family's race.

Keylan Grayson 4th

He is basically saying that he wants his family to act like normal individuals rather than acting as a basic sterotype for black people.

Janesia Henderson

The father is proud of being black but just dislikes the actions us African Americans do. Since we present our selves as having no discipline or home training, and being ignorant , A lot of people judge the African American society.

Deranique Browning 2ndPeriod

The father basically want his family not to act ignorant . But I don't think that "black-ish" has anything with your color because anyone can be ignorant . He wants them to act their culture black which means self control & learn more about their culture .
