Net Neutrality

12/19/2017

Picture
Today, net neutrality keeps the Internet free for both consumers (you) and businesses (Amazon, Netflix, etc.).

However, it appears that the FCC is about to either repeal or dismantle net neutrality rules. Currently, talk of net neutrality is a hot topic, especially on the government level where the FCC's opinions are being questioned.

From Amazon and Netflix, to ATT and HBO, many companies have strong opinions about what net neutrality would do for their business. Many consumers have also weighed in and some are quite frankly, afraid.

Net neutrality is how the internet has always worked, i think it should stay. Without it, consumers will have to suffer by paying higher fees and being restricted in what content is available. Businesses might be able to benefit off of consumers that can pay whatever fees imposed, but if the fees are too outrageous, they will loose profit.

Not only does this law protect the consumers from unjust prices, it also protects the content people see. So I concur with your statement I dont think the government should have repealed this law.

Not all companies will profit from this. Small businesses who rely on the internet to gain consumers, as well as companies who are internet based won’t get the same amount of traffic.

D Parker 1st

The repeal of net neutrality would cause people to pay at least $100 a month to access social media, search engines and news sites. That means that no one except well-off business owners themselves and the rich will be able to afford it, therefore limiting their consumer pool. It's not just annoying because it was once affordable (the internet was never free because you pay companies like Time Warner and AT&T for its usage at a smaller fee) but rather upsetting because it keeps information away from the masses.

Unfortunately, net neutrality will only be beneficial to large businesses that are already well established. Again, net neutrality helped us(consumers), it is the repeal that is going to hurt us. With all honesty, the repeal of net neutrality, now will let companies charge us, to use their sites. I completly agree, if Net Neutrality were repealed business' around the world would take a huge hit. Clearly as frequent users of the internet we all know the toll it would take on us, but the government has failed to see how it will also affect major business'. Anyone in their right mind would clearly not want to have to pay to access a website, with slowed and even heavier monitored connection. Therefore business' that rely heavily on their websites, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc... would fall out of place. Even google would be in some trouble, seeing as how we all use google more than five times a day, imagine paying for that.

I feel like if neutrality happened and the internet was to be taken away from us , a lot of business will go down hill. We us internet to all day everyday , business women and men use the internet to promote there business. That how some of the business got created in the world. If the internet was taken from me . Internet addiction is definitely an issue for many that is negative and harmful, but removing the internet from the lives of the general population won't help either. The only people who would be able to afford many of the sites we use everyday such as Google or CNN are middle class or in the top 1%. People in the working class won't be able to access information or communicate with others as easily.

The potential repeal of net neutrality is execrable because no one owns the internet, so therefore Americans should not have to pay to access the internet if they choose. Small businesses would notice an impact of the potential repeal because many businesses are started with the free help of the internet. Through the internet, small business are able to communicate with other businesses and customers, the business can spread throughout the world wide web, which leads to an increase in profits. Without net neutrality, small businesses may experience an unnecessary challenge caused by the internet. This would affect families, especially low-income families because this would cause more money being spent that could have been used for a better purpose. Most school-related projects and homework are done with the internet. If children in low-income families cannot afford the internet, school would be harder for them.

I agree, the internet has been such an reliable and essential resource for years, and as the years go by the internet and majority of technology will be essential to the daily activities of mankind. For example there has been an idea to make a drive through grocery store, one where people can drive to the lane with foods and goods and pay with the click of a button. Because of things like this, the internet and other tools are now required to function meaning it would be quite perilous to put a price on it.

As a society we constantly say how we want to advance further and make things more easier to do but this repeal makes things much worse. Net neutrality is a sufficient action that allows people to have access to majority of the things that they need in terms of the internet. Without net neutrality, people would have another thing to budget daily. People already have to pay bills, and work so that they can live comfortably. For those who have children, the situation is worse, the internet for so long has been a reliable source that provides access to needs and world wide situations. If net neutrality was abolished, people would be forced to pay for things that they have not grown accustomed to budgeting for and because the internet is such a essential resource, people should be allowed a vast amount of information from it.

R. Garcia 1st

Not necessarily, repealing net neutrality does not mean consumers will be required to pay for navigating the internet. On the contrary, the content providers will be required to pay, and not even then, because service providers may not even choose to charge content providers.

Haynes B. 1st

Net neutrality allows me as a consumer to control what I see online for no extra cost. While repealing net neutrality will not affect me directly in terms of money, it will control my freedom online. For instance, if net neutrality were to be taken away from Americans, companies like Verizon and Comcast would be able to dictate what consumers are able to view online. Since I’ve been wanting to start a small business in the near future, if I’m not able to pay providers to promote their content, my business would come to an end—as well as other small businesses. The internet would change for the worse if net neutrality is repealed, and unfortunately the future of our freedom doesn’t lie in our hands.

This controversial issue just demonstrates how government works and how dysfunctional it is. It is said countless of times how our government is a democracy "the land of the free". In my opinion, this fallacy that we have of our fair just democracy no longer applies. If a candidate who won the popular vote cannot win the presidency because electoral college. How is that fair? How can five people decide to change a protocol that ensures the satisfaction of consumers. The repealment of net neutrality will affect the lives of millions of people, because if the corporations are not being regulated who is going to stop them from raising their prices.

D. Hearne 1st

When it comes to the internet, everyone will agree that it’s something we need. The internet is a platform for self expression, art, news, entertainment, articles, books, and everything in between. Net neutrality takes away this platform for those who can’t afford it. Big businesses like Netflix and Amazon will suffer from net neutrality in terms if profit. Some people will pay for it, but upper middle class and the wealthy only make up a small percent of the population. I spend a lot of time on the internet, recreational as well as school time. I use it to connect with friends and family. My personal and academic life would be greatly affected by net neutrality.

The internet exists to make information accessible to people from all walks of life. Most users already pay companies hundreds of dollars a year to access it. Adding extra fees is just greedy and will actually make business go down. Not everyone can put aside several hundred dollars a month to use news sites, websites ran by government organizations and search engines. It also limits the knowledge of others. Students, teachers and researchers need the internet for their jobs. Without it, we won't be able to complete all of our assignments or exchange what we know. Net neutrality being repelled will negatively affect the lives of many and is unjust.

I concur with this statement because the internet was created to make things easier to access. Net neutrality would be contradicting the reason for the internet being made. Net neutrality is the one thing we all depend on. We use the internet for research, information, registrations, to share ideas etc... my opinion on it being repealed is that it's something we can all disagree on. The FCC isn't looking at how much this will affect us. If we as the people can't get what we ask for then what's the point of us making all these laws and rules in the first place. This will affect companies that have worked hard to make their money or the joy they gave into entertaining us and helping us express ourselves. Business will go down and our mindsets (including mine) will become less creative.

Haynes B. 1st

The internet is a place for people to do research, share their work, spread their businesses, et cetera. If net neutrality is repealed, the internet will take a turn for the worse. Entertainers that post videos on YouTube will possibly lose subscribers, creatives that use Instagram and Twitter for exposure will probably not be able to anymore. This is horrible because the FCC isn't thinking about how this will affect Americans.

S.Johnson1st

Net neutrality allows me to see this that interest me for free. The internet is where many people go to promote business, artistic creations, music ,etc. With the fcc wanting to limit what we can view online ,ratings for many things will go down. Everyone isn’t wealthy enough to give hundreds or dollars a month or year to view things such as school work. This also prohibits the whole education system as many schools intergrate technology into our everyday learning. Also many small business owners may fall because their main source of advertisement is on the internet and if they aren’t getting much view time due to payments not made by local people then the businesses may result into closure.

Williams, Z.4th
12/22/2017 08:57:04 am

I agree, many years ago before the internet grow more and more popular, a price to search the web did not alarm people. Research and educational teachings were done with books, hand on activities, and sense perception. Because of this, only a select few people had the internet regardless, and those who had it in their possession were quite rich and could afford such a thing. However, now that the internet is available to majority of the population, there are the rich, poor, and well to do, citizens who have access. Thus, there are many people who could not afford to pay for the internet and they would lose access to educational benefits, daily updates, and social media.

James, Z. 1st

The education system will have to depend on textbooks with this repeal. Student will be more misinformed of knowledge and will not make it in the world. If schools were to pay for the internet they would lose a lot of money and it would interfere with the U.S. Department of Education.

Net Neutrality rules should be kept in place, because they allow us to access what we want on the Internet without any extra costs. The only reason some Internet providers are against net neutrality is because they want to profit from it. Think of the Internet as a utility of sorts; We use it everyday and its extremely significant to how we live our lives. Taking away net neutrality is basically stripping us of that basic utility. Internet providers don't deserve the power to control what we view on the Internet, or to charge us accordingly.

I certainly do not like this Net Neutrality.I mean if theses websites weren't free basically we be paying double.Like why do people have to pay to get on Amazon and also pay for what there looking for.It makes no sense and I think you'll actually be losing money.Amazons a quicker and easier place to get what your looking for instead of going to stores. Everyone's not rich and everyone does not have that type of money instead of being greedy try being considerate, it seems like this world is just falling apart.

I agree with you, some people who uses the internet may not have all the money in the world so this net neutrality situation is just destroying them and their bank account.

Net neutrality with be making us pay for internet and wifi. Most people are already having a hard time on paying the wifi, it's just going to be more of a struggle for them.

I agree. It's a huge disadvantage to us consumers and pointless. Net Nuetrality should remain the same

Net neutrality helps people to be able to have internet without paying anything. People will be affected if it's taken away and also business would lose so much money. Now day many information is online thats helps us with work and social life it's also there. Companies will lose money because people will not be able to be paying to be in a website looking for something simple. Therefore net neutrality should stay there for the consumer and companies.

In addition to your comment net neutrality was created to prevent these companies form overusing their power by charging people just for using the internet even though they pay for it. It really makes me mas that corporations are so low that they would do this to their consumers.

I agree with you. Net Nuetrality shouldn't have a cost beause in the end, it wouldn't benefit the consumers or businesses in some way.

I believe that taking away net neutrality is terrible idea as it allows internet service providers to mess with access to websites and charge high prices just to use apps on a computer and phone. This is also a violation of our rights as we pay for the internet already and with net neutrality gone, companies will take advantage of this and over abuse their power. The internet is a very essential part to humanity as a lot of people rely on the internet for entertainment, work, and calculations. As a person who practically live on the internet, this is a tragedy that will come with huge consequences.

I have to agree with you Mr. Ajuobi because paying for internet already plus an additional fee just because we need an app. This will be a disaster for the community.

Net neutrality allowed the consumers to have the privilege of having internet with no cause. Repealing the act is the only way to help these type of businesses prosper or gain some type of founding and profit. This country itself is not prospering, yet they are implementing more payments for platforms that were once free? Some people are living check by check, the economy is going down. Privileges that were once set are being thrown out little by little.

Being it that The Internet is the basis upon which our technological society runs. Net neutrality is very important for the sake of advancement. While it is not Indispensable to our survival a absence of net neutrality would be detrimental to the way we function as a race. Whether it’s sending a simple text or surfing the web for solutions to a life-threatening situation. Our access to the Internet plays a major role in the way we live our lives

Net neutrality is a principle that ensures all data and content is treated the same by internet service providers. Removing net neutrality will allow service providers to charge content providers whatever they choose. Not only that, but it will allow service providers to block content and control the speed of the content. Removing the principle, in my opinion, will give way to the formation of monopolies. What i mean by this is that, since service providers will have so much control over content , they may choose to charge content providers more for their content to reach the consumer faster than their competitors. A result of this would be bigger companies, who will be able to pay more, taking over, leaving smaller sites unable to grow. Not only this, but because content providers will be charged more, they will have to charge consumers more to obtain a maximum profit.

What you're saying is completely true and far from fair. It seems like in America we are always throwing around the word 'Free' and we don't seem to comprehend it. The strongest argument that is being presented by people who wish to rid of Net Neutrality is that it aids in the spread of terrorism. Though terrorism is often seen throughout the internet, it won't simply stop because we have to pay more. The internet was an aid, not the purpose.

Net Neutrality will take the internet away from us. the only people that would be able to access the internet is the people with money to blow. Everyone will be dramatically be affected by net neutrality. The internet is used for everything such as communicating with friends and family to finding out directions.Net neutrality will destroy the human race.

Net neutrality is the basic and pure element of the internet. The internet has always been a place where people can post their creative ideas freely. So to suddenly try and push for payment for something that has always been a creative outline is unfair, not to mention people are already paying companies to have WiFi and internet with proper speed. So is it truly fair to also make people pay for visiting websites with slower internet and no access to certain 'pre-approved' websites? No, and the argument that the internet is a source of hatred and terrorism is an unfair case to present, because even before their was internet hate and terrorism spread like a wildfire.

Net neutrality is affecting all social media platforms, and more, across the United States. We need the internet because it's one way we get to entertain our self and connect with one another and net neutrality is taking that away from us. Nowadays, most people depend on the internet. Some people can't live without internet. I'm a person that uses social media a lot, and I can't live without internet or wifi.

Net neutrality is a necessary need and people are treating it as if it is a a amenity. Before net neutrality, websites were able to charge different prices to different people, platforms, and etc until 2015 where now they must treat people the same on pricing. If they were to repeal net neutrality businesses would have to charge other businesses just to access their websites. It is ironic because the FCC claims that repealing net neutrality would help businesses, when really it won't. It would be difficult for me to do basic things, homework, projects, or just even accessing the internet, because I will be charged money for it. Then, I would have to pay for big things like college applications, ACT/SAT, and much more.

I think net neutrality is an important thing to have. The internet is an easier way for people to connect, a quick source for information, and has been a main source of entertainment for a long time. By making us pay to access everything, it takes the fun out of the internet. Net neutrality can also hurt businesses like Netflix and Amazon. People are nor going to want to pay to access and then pay for the service the company has to offer. This will cause those companies to lose money.

N.Brown1st

I believe they should let it be free because it will help benefit both them and us . It would benefit them by keeping more people connected . It will also benefit us by keeping us connected to updates . Net Neutrality can hurt the biggest business and may even put them out of business. It’s better free so no one can lose money and it’s fair .

Net Neutrality is important to have, especially considering the fact that the world revolves around the internet. Social media is the fastest way of transporting informa. All social media requires the internet, so there for net neutrality is needed in the world. Many businesses have websites and without the internet they wouldn't have any customers. Without net neutrality the whole world would change and not in a positive way.

Jameela B 7th pd

The net neutrality debate has little to do with making the internet open for users to go where they wish online. Americans have always enjoyed that liberty, even before the Open Internet Order was passed, and broadband providers, sometimes called ISPs, have every incentive to provide that freedom to their customers.

D. Rodriguez 7th
12/29/2017 07:35:51 pm

Net Neutrality to me, should remain as it's always been, free. That way, the majority of us consumers could be satisfied. If Net Nuetrality were to add a price to our social media use, businesses would have a great advantage with money. Apps like Netflix and HBO would be payed more because most people are willing to use their money to watch shows for entertainment instead of paying for social media. But consumers wouldn't like to make the choice of paying to post a picture. Social media use would highly decrease. So Net Nuetrality should remain as it is.

Net Neutrality will affect people’s everyday lives in a major change. Some work through the internet and even take care of them selves with it. This will hurt businesses worldwide with a stab to a large way of sells. On the other hand there are plenty of businesses benefiting from this and could possibly better their revenue.
