Transgender Student Rights Guaranteed Under California Law

A California lawmaker has introduced legislation aimed at guaranteeing transgender students the right to use public school restrooms and participate on the sports teams that correspond with their expressed genders.

The bill reflects the accommodations that a number of U.S. schools are being asked to make as Americans start identifying as transgender at younger ages.

If approved, the bill would give young people the right "to participate in sex-segregated programs, activities and facilities" regardless of what gender is listed on their school records. What motive is there behind the bill and what are the pros and cons of putting into place a law that guarantees the rights of transgender students?

I think that whoever made the bill knew some transgendered people, and wanted them to have rights. the pros of this is that the transgendered student will feel accepted for who they are, and happy. The cons of this is that the people who are not transgendered and have to go to the bathrooom or change clothes in front of them will probably feel very uncomfortable.

I agree 100%. And if they didnt KNOW any transgenders, they must have at least seen it happening.

I agree , we are all equal. Genders , race , nothing matters. I feel as if we all should not just say we're equal but equal.

I agree with Hannah because someone he knew probably pushed him to try to pass the law

I think the motive is to finally stand by the statement "all men are created equal". We cant just separate people by beliefs, or gender. The pros are slightly obvious, transgenders will no longer be discriminated. Im not sure there are any CONCRETE cons, but there is always a downside.

The bill was created to protect the transgenders lifestyle without disrupting the opinions of others. It benefits the trans genders without worrying about others would say or fearing that they are breaking the rules. They have the confidence and power to be who they are. The cons are that there are still going to be people that disagree with the decision and might call the situation unjust. This will cause an uproar in the community.

I believe that the individual that created the bill probably wanted those that are transgendered to have equal rights to us that are of natural gender. The transgendered are reassured that they are safe and have the same rights as others to participate in school activities.
If the bill isn't pass then we as the United States of America have taken the basic rights of transgendered, which contradicts the US Declaration of Independence were all men are created equal.

The bill gives the students the right to express themselves and be able to do as they please by their expressed gender. The pros of this bill is the student aren't segregated from programs and public places because of there sex. The cons are that some people aren't going to except it and there will be some type of conflict.

Victoria, I agree with your statement due to the fact that everyone should have the right to be who they want to be, and enjoy the freedom this country offers. Also, there will probably be much dissension among people and many will try to extinguish this law.

I agree with Alex because, all were created equal no matter who you choose to be or what you choose to do and there will always be a downside.

"All man are created equal" goes a long way in this world. Everyone have their own equal right up until a limit. however, weather your transgender, support gay marriage or anything, as in the US you have the right to be free and have your opinion on what you wanna do.

I don't agree because I do not belive in switching body parts and i belive this is really a political perception more than an equal rights preception.

I agree with you. They're deceiving, trying to make it seem like a good thing by saying all people have equal rights. In reality it's all bad.

The bill gives transgenders the right as all other people are given. i believe your gender shouldn't matter because we all should be treated equal, as humans. Everyone has their own beliefs. The cons , they might still get criticized.

Demetrius
10/31/2014 03:35:39 am

I disagree because this is a negative bill being considered. If this passes it will only influence people to become transgender. This is a bad influence on our world 😪

I agree with Demetrius because God made men to be a man and women to be women

Aspen Smith

I think this bill is great because it gives students the right to be themselves while also doing what they enjoy.
Were supposed to be equal and free right ? Its about time someone stood up .

I agree with Alex , let people be thierselfs

Dondre Irvin

I agree with Michael because I believe this is more of a political thing than an equal rights issue with the lawmaker just trying to get the favor he thinks he may need to move up in status or power or just trying to satisfy those with a personal connection to him. It's true that all men were created equal, but this a law for those who weren't "created" that way. The pros are pretty obvious, equal rights and treatment for those identifying as transgender. However, the cons are that not everyone believes in that. In passing the law, you're going against many people's beliefs and morals which will only cause issues for and with them.

They made the bill because they wanted too make every one feel even because they probably knew someone with that problem

Halee Boyd

I do not see the point into changing your gender, but for those who feel like they have to change their gender then the bill should be pass. Because people have to right to express themselves and need to be treated equally.

The motive behind the bill is most probably the concern about our modern society, and how they would defend for what they believe is freedom. The pros which this law will include are; equality, help self-esteem for many, and most importantly the assurance of many students to be able to show who they really are. The cons this bill will cause include; disturbance for many students, the attacks from parents toward the government, and also many judgments that will surely cause commotion.

Derrica Anderson

The motive of this bill is attempted equality for transgendered individuals. It is advantageous because the transgendered people will be able to participate in sex-segregated programs and activities. However, this is also disadvantageous because there will be more criticism to the transgendered society.

I Think that the reason why this bill was created was to hide there own desire to be transformed into a different person. This bill was most likely made in order to make them feel better about there own sexuality. To that end, the bill is just a camouflage for personal gain.

Christian Forehand
10/31/2014 04:17:44 pm

I think the motive of the bill was to give them the same rights that we have, some pros would be they world be able to go in certain places and do more than what they were able to do before. Cons are that they will be picked on and talked about for they're ways

Rauscher manning
10/31/2014 04:39:03 pm

Their motive behind the bill is to create all people equal and not have any separation among human society.

Roberto Molina 2nd period

Rauscher, I agree with you because people were created to live together and to always be equal.

roberto molina 2nd period

They created the bill in order to give young people a right to be a part of any activities in school, and also to have a voice. On the other hand a con from this bill would be that other people are going to keep talking about their actions.
