This prompt means that you show more of what you can do and speak of only things you know. this is kind of like" speak what you know and show what you got", you have to do more and speak about what you know. The point of this prompt is to encourage people to show your work and speak about the things you learned.

Only say what you know it's true and not speak with you barely know and don't make up what you barely learned from the lesson because you basically saying speak before you think that's coming out of your mouth because it's going to come out wrong that you going to regret saying.

I think that this quote means don't be flashy. Don't flaunt what you don't want to loose. Also nobody likes a know it all because it means that you think that you are above and superior than everyone else. Furthermore you want to have a social life than to be lonely because you make people shrink.

I think your comment is good, I also think that the prompt means that you should show off more than you would regularly do and speak what you know and less of what you don't know

I have to agree with your comment Ms. Criss. There is no need to be extra in showing off what you do have. Being an ignorant fool and showing all that you have will only reveal your weaknesses. Furthermore, no one likes to hang out with a cocky person. Hence the term "money doesn't buy happiness."

Brenae, while the qoute may be hinting at humbleness and not making others feel inferior, I don't believe that wanting a social life should be the reason for doing so. Friends come and go, but as a person who values peace, being humble is more about limiting conflict.

I agree with her answer. I too believe the quote is saying don't flaunt what you have because, you can lose it the same way you received it. Personally, I wouldn't necessarily say people would think they know it all because, they like to flaunt. People wouldn't like them because, they overly brag about the things they have and that could make them think they're superior.

I agree because some people don't have stuff to show off with. So if your always showing of your stuff that makes some people feel less of themselves. And I think you should be able to speak your mind because that shows who you are and your character. A lot of peopl just want to speak and don't even know what they be talking about. But somethings you just need to keep to yourself.

People often say that actions speak louder than words which is indeed a reference to the quote above. Showing your capabilities allows you to be true to your character and can open many doors however, our capabilities should never be limited. In other words, as a person you should always have more to offer then what you are accustomed to whether it is in your professional or social life. Words do not have the same impact as actions do which is why it is better to say less then to say too much. For instance, inventors on a daily basis are in competition with one another to create the next big thing but, in order to be successful in the task they have to keep their ideas to themselves to avoid any plagiarism. Therefore, actions should always be endless and those same actions will demonstrate and speak about the words that were never said.

"Speak of something you know by showing it and by not being to flashy or cocky about it", is a valid statement. Being cocky and flashy will bring hatred upon itself. Speaking nonsense when you don't know the validity of what is being said is irrelevant. On the other hand, I don't agree with your statement "you should show off more than you do on regular bases. The quote says "have more than you show", I believe this is trying to say don't hand in everything about you at the same time. Keeping many things to yourself is more beneficial than handing out to anyone else, because only you know yourself, and what it's capable of.

People often say "I can't show all my tricks at once" and that is what the quote can relate to. If you show all your tricks it once no one will be surprised at what else you can do. This quote can also relate to how not to come off as a know it all and high and mighty about everything because that can send the wrong message to your peers and others around you. Also actions speak louder than words so if you speak less than you know, you can show that you know. Anyone can say they can do a backflip but unless you show that you can your words mean nothing. Together the quote can mean to be humble about your talents and let your actions speak louder than your words.

M. Rodriguez
9/1/2016 09:49:18 pm

Being humble can be related to the quote but the quote more connects to not wanting other to know what you know until you want them to know. Like you said "don't show all of your tricks at once" and that also applies because you still want people to be amazed or shocked if they didn't believe in you

T. Dawson , 1st

The prompt is suggesting to act humble. If a person flashes all that they have and is always speaking more than needed, they will attract negative attention. There will always be those that follow high-strung people, but that is because they are insecure about themselves just like their leader. An example is Mr.Trump and how he behaves reflects his true self. In the end, those that live humble have a better quality of life when it comes to personal satisfaction.

J. Vela - 4th
9/1/2016 05:45:03 pm

If you think about it, Mr. Trump does not need humbleness to achieve personal satisfaction. He lives at the top of TRUMP TOWER with his family and all things luxurious. The same goes for others like him, the materialistic people of this world. For them, bragging is a pleasant pass-time. This constant announcement of success would not exist if there not A success to start off with. When the people outside of their riches do not return their happiness, the materialistic people must only walk into their chambers to find peace and personal satisfaction.

T. Dawson - 1st
9/1/2016 10:30:59 pm

Yes, bragging can be a pleasant pass time for those who highly value materialistic things. Yet, bragging can only do so much. As they say, "Money can't buy happiness". For Mr.Trump, it may be that money does ,but his happiness is bought through money due to his infant-like mindset. Having such a mindset can limit how you interpret the world . To people that are more open minded, it seems as if he hasn't reached personal satisfaction.

S. Mendez 4th

When people constantly brag about their own accomplishments they attract negativity. This could indeed be life threatening, because hateful people will do hateful things. Therefore your argument of the quote depicting humbleness is a great perspective. It explains how a person should be humble for their own inner peace, which I connected to an external peace as well.

I agree, people sometimes wants to show off by talking and saying things that are not necessary. People have to be humble when it come to say what they think , but not because they are insecure about themselves, but because they want to be.

Knowledgeable people are often judged for their "talent" or "smarts" in a negative way. People think them superior when they themselves could actually be humble. I go through these motions in my everyday life. The qoute also reminds me of how slaves who knew how to read and write would have to hide their true knowledge to protect their lives. People who aren't as adept become jealous and feel inferior to those who rise above them, which in turn causes this sort of "bashing" against intelligent people. They don't know how to be more so they want others to feel less. Knowledgeable people have to tone down their mind in compromise; is it fair? No but it's necessary in certain social situations.

E.Valdez- 4th period

Judgement is part of our daily life that we are now somewhat accustomed to the criticism. I do believe in what you said that people become jealous and inferior to those who are above, just because you have a talent and intelligence that other might not have doesn't mean you have to lower yourself to their expectations. A person should never be someone they are not. As an IB student we often get criticized by other because of our intelligence and in the position we are currently in. Therefore, yes I very much agree and understand the perspective in which you are coming from.

Some people pride themselves on being humble; others demean themselves by seeking to stand out among the bunch. I personally struggled with this first sentence because there is not a positive verb that is a synonym for "humbleness" like there is for "pride." This first sentence proves that there is an established moral concept regarding William Shakespeare's quote.

One pool of people would say that Shakespeare's comment that you need to "Have more than you show, and speak less than you know" is a moral law that has no place in today's society. They would say, "In college applications, to not overdose an admissions essay with all of your incomparable accomplishments is the same as asking for potential unemployment."

Another pool of people may look at Shakespeare's quote and put it on a poster to hang it on their walls as a visual reminder. They would say, "It is not okay to become camouflaged in this corrupt society; let me be the rich among the poor of mind.".

In the English language, it has been established that everyone should strive to be humble. It only makes sense that William Shakespeare, the "Bard of Avon," would choose to create this sentence. However, it is debatable if this quote is relevant to today's society.

People like to flaunt their capabilities and their possession’s because it helps their ego. However, you should never show all of your capabilities at once, you should keep the mystery of who you are to yourself, in order to surprise people of what you can do. Knowledgeable people are the humblest because they know who they are, and they know that they don’t need to over share in order to be successful. This quote is generally saying that you can accomplish a lot without having to flaunt your success to everyone around you. Another thing is that these type of people will most likely always hold a small conversation because they also know that when you speak more than you should, you could possibly ruin your next move. For example, people in the same career field are in one giant competition to see who is better, or who is the most successful. With that being said the more you speak the more you let people know, this makes you predictable which means that you’ll end up losing the competition due to your oversharing. It’s good to be a mystery because that way no one will ever know what you’re up to or how you’re doing which makes you unstoppable.

A great deal of people say its good not to be egotistic for many reasons. "Have more than you show," is depicting the idea keeping to oneself our greatest ideas or abilities because it is not wise to reveal what you have to other. This is important because there are people that are waiting for you to make the slightest mistake so they ca gain the upper hand and can cause you a great harm. For example, a girl scout leader continuously talks about their frequent buyers and how they only buy from the first ones who arrive at the store. Due to the bragging she could give out the location and be stolen of the sales just because she wanted everyone to know they were the best at selling cookies. Also "Speak less than you know," can mean to accommodate others in order for them not to feel inferior to someone of great knowledge. For example, fellow piers might think that the IB students are impossible to talk to because were "too smart" but whenever we come across a friendly human we try to make things are comfortable as possible. We don't speak as though we are superior to anyone because that's just common curtesy not to be that person who "does too much." This quote can be relevant in society nowadays or back in William Shakespeare's time

Assumptions that can be made from the quote,"Have more than you show and speak less than you know", could possibly say, remain humble with the things that are given to you. There isn't any necessity to go around flaunting what you have because, others will realize what you have on their own timing. Such as the sayings," Actions speak louder than words or, "Well done is better than well said." In other words all of your hardwork will show when it's time to take the test. Speak less and show less isn't anything more than staying humble, and letting everything shine in due time.

J. Bonilla - 1st

Society has a way of molding people; from the way they think to the way they are. Now a day many flaunt on what they have, or try to show off on how they are better than others. “Have more than you show” means that it’s better to not show everything off at once. No one is really assured on the motive behind every smile, meaning they can be using you for their own well-being. For example, being the CEO of a successful food place, “your friend” may socialize with you just to get the tips and tricks on becoming successful. Showing off more than necessary will also cause people to become envious of you. “Speak less than you know”, means that being humble is better than speaking too much. The more knowledgeable you are the more intimidating you will appear. Therefore speaking less will not make people be intimidated towards you, and they won’t try to bring you down. Although people like to appear better than everyone else by showing off too much, saying and showing a small amount of you will make you appear better than anyone else.

Jaydin, although I agree with most of your post I want to say that society doesn't necessarily mold you. Just like how your parents raise you with a certain perspective on life but it's essentially up to you whether you allow their perspective to become your reality. Society has its opinions but its really up to the beholder and how much they allow it to influence their life decisions.

The prompt is suggesting that your being should be so complex that it would take time for someone to get to know you. Meaning having more to you than what they perceive from your appearance or their first interaction with you. Also, the prompt is suggesting that you should be humble. When you're a knowledgeable person, you are often misunderstood because of the misconceptions of being a know it all. So, silence is the best key at times . Regardless of the situation, your actions should speak for you revealing your ultimate truth whether its pretty or not.

Eduardo Franco

The prompt is basically telling you be in how you present yourself to the world By that I mean of your success. Second, One must show less than what one has, and talk less of what one knows. In other words, less is more. We don’t always have to share the secrets we know, nor do we always have to show off the possessions we have. It’s for me to know and for you to find out. Third, Do not Flaunt what you have just because you have it and do not say what you know just because you know it.

Sometimes it is wise not to reveal to others all that you have. You have to know who you are dealing with and what their motives are. You are protecting yourself and your family when you think this way. Everyone does not have to know all of your business and what you own. Also, when we show all that we have, it is sometimes looked upon as being braggy and flaunting our good fortune and valuable possessions. This can make others really jealous and hateful.

Sonia moncivais 1st pd
9/2/2016 10:43:12 pm

People often try to please others, on the daily basis, where it says "have more that you show, and less than you know" means that you have to be your self and show what you have by actions and not by words. The word does not mean anything because you can say whatever you want but you may not realize what are you saying at the moment, but with action you could be more specific and show what you really mean. The words would never be the same as actions, so it will be much better to say less than to say so much, because you don't have to prove that you are great on things. Therefore you always have yo be as better you can, but you won't always be right with all the thing you say, but is better to say as little as possible and maybe use body language or actions to express the rest. The knowledge we have with us may never be use at the right moment, but it will help us one day when we show what we know but with actions and not words.

Speak less than you know

This quote is saying that you shouldn't be too cocky about the things that you have. Some people don't have the things you do, and you should be thankful for the things you have. For example, there are kids in poverty all around the world, including our own country. We should be selfless and kinder with our actions.
