I think this picture teaches us that you're not that different from others than you think you are. Depicted from the gorilla, we're not that different from others despite having different physical appearances. It teaches me to not underestimate anyone and judge a book by it's cover, because what you see may not be their full potential. The gorillas may not look so smart, but they have a lot of hidden potential that people don't know about. Likewise, a lot of people in society can easily outsmart you too, despite not looking the part (or rather, the stereotypical look).

Praew (Creative Writing Block F)

I like how you state that we should not judge other people from their appearances, I agree with that also. I also agree that people may have hidden potential in ways that we do not estimate them to have. This may surprise us in many aspects of life.

I like how you mentioned the idiom "judging a book by it's cover". I felt that that was a good way to convey your message that there are many sides of a person that we wouldn't be able to see from the outside.

Nadia (Creative Writing Block F)

Reading your view on the picture, I agree how physical appearance should not determine how smart you are. Smart people don't have to wear glasses, or even have their heads buried in a book. Like what you said about comparing people to books. There are so many chapters to a person's story, and being smart is definitely just one out of the many.

I like your idea of how it shows that we are not more superior than animals, everything can be smart weather it is human or animals. Underestimating animals is not a great choice since there are experiments and proves that animals can learn and can be smarter that humans. The appearance should not determine someone success.

In my opinion, I think this images captures the similarities of humans and other animals. We would like to believe that, as humans, we are more developed mentally and physically than other animals. However, as seen in this image, we are not that all different. Even though our brains may be more capable of logic and reasoning (which is shown by the chess game), animals could be capable of it also.

SaoChi (Creative Writing Block B)

It was really good to read when you said we and animals are not that all that different, and even though our brain may be more capable of logic and reasoning, that doesn't mean animals cannot. The picture even shows the guy stressing out playing chess against the chimp, this shows that we humans, shouldn't look down on animals, even if we may look better or are smarter, animals are still better in their own ways.

People are weaker than animals physically. It is true that humans are smarter but we are not better physically. We are totally different from animals. We are able to understand each other better than animals, also not all animals are capable of being as humans. Humans have thumbs that are very useful for survival. With a brain that is capable of logical thinking, we are way ahead of animals.

I agree with you when you say we are more similar to animals than we think. As seen from a lot of experiments done in the past, animal's body structure can be really similar to us, and they're often used to learn more about us people. I believe that this is all because of evolution. I believe that animals, like us, have emotions and thought processes and everything. An example would be elephants, who move in herds and have very strong emotional connections to each other, and can even draw pictures with their trunks.

My initial thought was also the same as yours! I got that idea from seeing the chess pieces colors, where observing both of the man and the monkey's side, there are some pieces that is not totally white or black; in fact, a mixture of both colors. Even though people are different nobody is dumb do not look down on others even if they are different from you. Just like gardener theory in psychology. People are intelligent on a different part of the spectrum. This chimp might be different from the man and might lack intelligence compare to the man. But this chimp might be good at chess, so don't look down on others.

SaoChi (Creative Writing Block B)

I liked how you said that everyone is good at something and if they are different, doesn't mean that you should look down on them. I also like how you stated that the chimp looked different, and lacked intelligence, but it still doesn't mean he cannot be good at chess. Everyone is good at something and not everyone is perfect, so just don't look down on others before you know them.

Lara (Creative Writing Block F)
10/6/2021 01:49:50 am

I really like how you included the part that "people are intelligent on a different part of the spectrum". For example, others may not be as good as you when it comes to solving math equations, but they might be street smart instead and can live in society more successfully than you. I think this also relates to a lot of the more traditional aspects of school. When someone doesn't have good grades at school, this doesn't mean that they're not smart, so we really shouldn't judge each other just by looking at one side of their personality/life.

janice (ap lit)

This picture is trying to spread a message saying to never ever underestimate others. Even if they look different from you, or act differently from you, it doesn't mean that they are inferior to you. We should act the same to everyone, they belong somewhere and shouldn't be treated that way. We humans especially, likes to look down on others because we think we are superior. When I was looking at the picture, I thought about people having stereotypes, and I totally agree how this often leads to acting superior towards certain groups of people. No one gets to do that, and as the old saying goes, "treat others the way you want to be treated". Forming negative opinions about someone after getting to know them well is totally different from having negative opinions before. Only then, can we truly judge them, and even then, we probably don't see every side of them.

janice (ap lit)
10/6/2021 03:13:49 am

In the picture I see a man and a gorilla playing chess. The message this picture tries to convey is that even though humans believe that we are smarter than all animals, it may not be true. And that message is conveyed to how humans often look down on others and believe that they are the greatest, when that is often false.

First (creative writing F)
10/6/2021 03:50:52 am

In the sentence that you said it may not always be true that humans are smarter than animals, that's exactly how I thought. Some animals are more clever than humans. Besides, some people are cruel in the way they scorn others thinking that they are powerful than others. And this picture also represents how that way of thinking is false.

Jabari creative writing (E)
10/6/2021 05:14:34 am

Nadia (Creative Writing Block F)
10/6/2021 03:33:01 am

Looking at this picture, a lesson that I got from it is to not have stereotypes. As humans, our stereotype towards animals are that they are not as intelligent as us. In life, there are so many stereotypes that are pasted on race, age, gender, etc. We never know someone's full potential until we truly get to know them. So, although we can have stereotypes, we should always remember to stay open minded when it comes to being proven wrong.

Allie (Creative writing F)
10/6/2021 05:14:37 am

Many humans sees that animals are not intelligent and does not have emotions. They are also one life that matters. This relates to where you state how we judge someone before we get to know them. Humans already judge that animals are not intelligent, therefore it is easy for humans to judge their own species.

Christine (Creative Writing F)
10/6/2021 11:09:36 am

Now that I read your comment and went back to the image to see the picture again, I can see how it is trying to convey the message of not having stereotypes. Usually we would use stereotypes on a group of people, however in this case, it is no different than us thinking that animals are not as intelligent.

First (creative writing F)
10/6/2021 04:22:22 am

I think this image represents how animals can be more intelligent than humans. According to the picture, the man seems to be nervous and anxious while playing chess. Whereas the monkey or gorilla appears to know what's its next move going to be. Additionally, it also reflects on how sometimes humans believe that they are better than an animal or even other people. However, it is not always true, you'll never know who's better than you or who will be better than you, therefore, you shouldn't judge anyone in the first place.

Allie (creative writing F)
10/6/2021 05:16:23 am

Judgement is everywhere, I do feel like it's human nature to judge everything. It is like this automatic button that goes on instantly the moment we wake up. Humans judges animals, and we judges people that are different from us. Does it make us feel superior than others when we judge them?

EngEng Creative Writing B

In this pictures, i got a lot of ideas of what this pictures means. The fist meaning is the idea that anyone can learn, even the animals. people always think that animals can't do complicated things, yet some are smart enough to be able to play chess or solve puzzles. It also shows to never look down on others, even animals and things around you.

Lewis(Creative writing block B)

This picture says that "at the end of the day, we are all animals." Even though we are human it does not mean that we are the only "superior" species. We evolve from apes, so that means that monkeys, gorillas, or even apes themselves may be smart somehow. We should not hurt those animals just because we think we are superior, because they are just like us. They have their own species, their own way of communication, they eat, and they sleep.

Mim (Creative Writing Block F)

I really like the sentence "at the end of the day, we are all animals" and yes we really are. Sometimes we underestimate the animals.

I noticed how on the chess pieces, the bishops and queens would have the opposing pieces' color on them. For example, the black bishop has a white tip on top. I'm not sure if this was done on purpose, but judging from how it's a chimpanzee versus human match, I assume that there's a symbolic meaning to that. The pieces are probably representing how the two identities, although separate and quite vastly different, have certain things in common.

Kevin (AP Lit Block D)

The first thing that caught my eye in this post was the chess board. Despite one player being a chimpanzee and the other player being human, the moves they played are oddly familiar and equally subpar. I did also notice how the white king wears and black crown and the black king wears a white crown, I wonder if that is a symbol for something. It most likely is as chess is a symbol of intelligence and humans are the "superior" primates in comparison to chimps. What this is trying to show is probably "you're not as smart as you think you are". Many people get caught up in themselves and looks down upon others, but if you mess around too much in your arrogance you might just get checkmated before you even know it.

"but if you mess around too much in your arrogance you might just get checkmated before you even know it." Ok we get it, chess addict, but I really like how you mention chess as a symbol of intelligence. Perhaps the human player fell for the Stafford gambit and white is going to get mated in 7 moves, even though we would objectively see the human player as "smarter".

Brendon (creative writing F)

Just by skimming over the photo, I noticed so many things. Why are there white tops for some of the black pieces, and vice versa? Why is the chimpanzee smoking? Why chess and why are the positions so weird? After much analysis, either these are all well-placed symbolism, or I'm over analyzing everything. One thing I want to point out, there are some writings on the back wall, perhaps that's even more symbolism.

This is a very interesting picture. At the first glance, it seems like the human is losing to the chimpanzee in chess. I feel like the picture is trying to convey a message however I just can't really pin point what the message is. Is it role switch? Where the chimpanzee acts like humans while the human looks distressed because he can't do anything about it? Or is it that we are playing a game of chess with mother nature, and the more we move the more likely we'll lose?

Auto (creative writing block F)

I really like your last idea that we are playing a chess against mother nature. I don’t think it is a role switch since the man isn’t acting like a chimpanzee but the chimpanzee does act like a man. I think it is very interesting how you mentioned "role switch". Since it would look more 'correct' to humans if the man is winning the chess. However, in the picture, the man is losing and it gives us a feeling that this the roles must have been switched. Even though, there is no right or wrong but humans just love to think that we're superior to animals.

I agree, we can see that the person is stressing over the chess board, the reason behind it might be the fact that he can't accept if he loses so he tries his best to win because "Humans are more superior."

In real life, humans and monkeys are similar in their innate habits and physical characteristics because humans evolve from them. Therefore, I instinctively relate the board of chess with similar pieces with their innate similarities. However, the picture of chess symbolizes something bigger, which is the mental ability to actually win it. Although humans and monkeys are born with similar "resources" but what makes us different from them is our mental ability.

I agree with you and I liked how you tied a connection about what the game of chess is symbolizing. Another interesting thing is that in the picture we can see a crown at the back and I wonder what will happen to the person who wins this chess game. I think that maybe whoever wins the game will get to rule more land and resources on Earth.

I feel that this picture actually conveys a message deeper than not judging from appearance, but I feel that it is showing that humans overthink and stress over things. On the other hand we see the monkey enjoying THE SAME THING. This shows us how our brain is further "developed" and how the complexity hits us back with negativity.

I agree that in this picture, human look too stress out. Opposite from the money which look very happy and chill. And also human think too much which might not good for their health.

I like how you led out the point of overthinking...welp I didn't think of that. When we are digging deeper into the reason why the old man looked stressed, overthinking could definitely be a good explanation. Sometimes we just think too much for an issue that might do nothing good, and a "developed" brain in this case, just like u said, could hit us back with negativity.

I think that in this picture their is many view to it. You can see that an old man is playing chess with a monkey. This picture may mean that human and monkey are similar in term of bian because they can play chess together.

Mim (Creative Writing Block F)
10/8/2021 09:37:14 am

Yes, humans and animals like monkeys or chimpanzees are similar. As we know that humans are adapted from animals so we are not much different from animals but we can control ourselves more. The old man plays chess with the chimpanzees and he seems to be super stressed, doesn't want to lose to the chimpanzees but on the other hand, the chimpanzees seem to be fun knowing that the chimpanzees will be going to win anyway. We can see that sometimes we have to accept that animals are better than humans in some points.

Most humans tend to look down or underestimate animals. However, in this picture, the gorilla looks more confident and skilled at playing chess compared to the man. In reality, it might not be chess, but It conveys that animals could be smarter than humans in certain areas. Humans are not superior to animals.

I agree that the men have underestimated the monkey that maybe the men have confidence on winning the chess and he think that the monkey are not smarter then the men but it look like monkey have a lot of way to win the men.

I agree with the point that you brought up that humans tend to look down or underestimate animals. Humans always thought that they were the smartest creatures and they were the ones who have the most power in the natural world. However, it is true that humans are not superior to animals.

I like that you mentioned that human tend to look down or underestimate animals. It is the truth of our society right now and animals are actually smart, maybe smarter than some human beings.

I agree that many people look down on animals. I think maybe animals have very good brains too because like in this picture, the gorilla are playing chess with the man. And it seems that this gorilla can play chess, which it show us that this gorilla have a chance to win this game too.

On this picture I can see that the men are losing and the monkey look brave and smart at this picture that the monkey for sure are winning. Maybe the men have estimate that animal don't have brain and not smart that he play chess with monkey and now the monkey are winning. The monkey maybe think that he have lot of way to win this men chess game

I agree with you, many people think that animals have no brain and can't think. But actually, animals can learn and think because if they can't think why animals like dog can do what their owner said. In this picture, maybe this gorilla is wining the chess game and that man had never thought that he would lose for this kind of animal before.

Interesting comment, I actually agree that you've said that humans had underestimated the ability and intelligence of an animal. We, normal humans, are not scientists and some can just easily say their opinion on what they think about animals. But they didn't know how smart animals can actually be.

Jia Ying (English 9 )

I agree with you and I think this picture tells us not to underestimate people because we never know what they are planning on doing next. We can see that the monkey is doing things that normally humans would do like smoking and drinking, meanwhile the human is the one that looks like the one struggling in the game. The picture caches your eye because it's an unordinary behavior for a monkey to do, but at the same time it's not like humans own each and every action that we do. Humans can't just say only humans can smoke or drink and no other species can.

This picture describes how humans tend to value themselves most of time while underestimating others. This picture is a great representation because it depicts how certain animals (monkeys) can be smarter than you think. I like how the monkey is demolishing the man, and that he is just chilling with a cigarette in his mouth, waiting for the man to plan his next move.

Sinny (Creative Writing Block F)

"certain animals (monkeys) can be smarter than you think" and lots of people can't realize it ;) Or they just refuse to believe, who knows. Sometimes human get too arrogant as a "higher animal" (this alias actually exists) , but some animals that will never defeat them IN THEIR OPINION could be smarter than they think too.

The message that I could found in this photo is that humans are not always the smartest ones in the world. In this photo, it looks like the animal is winning because it looks really chill and the human looks really depressed during the chess game. It informs us that every living creatures are equal and to survive, you have to rely on your skills and knowledge.

Faith (AP Lit)
10/8/2021 08:23:58 am

Humans do have a superiority complex with other species, and even with each other. We're egoistic creatures, and sometimes it does get the best of us. This photo is humbling in a way and I agree with the fact that you called the man depressed.

Prim (English 9C/G)
10/8/2021 07:29:25 am

In this picture above, I see a man and a gorilla playing chess together. And I think it tells us that this kind of animal has such a good brain and very smart because this gorilla can play chess, which is the game that have to think carefully. Humans are not the smartest ones, even though we have better brains, but animals also can have better thoughts too. Monkeys, gorillas and king kongs are very similar to humans, they are the smart animals because they can learn many things and understand it easily.

Jack Eng9 C&G
10/8/2021 08:55:46 am

You're right, animals can actually be pretty smart and intelligent, especially monkeys and gorillas. Chess is also a game that requires time to think about every step carefully. And if humans train monkeys or gorillas to play chess, they might be better and smarter than humans.

Jia Ying (English 9)
10/8/2021 11:39:24 am

I agree with you, I think that many humans think that animals are not smart just because we don't have enough proof just how much knowledge animals really have. In the animal kingdom most don't live long so their number 1 priority is to survive. The animals have to worry about getting eaten or dying of natural causes everyday, so they don't necessarily need information other than what they need to survive. Hopefully in the future we will be able to figure out what animals are talking about and find out what type of knowledge they know about other than the knowledge to survive.

This picture shows a gorilla playing chess with a man. Gorilla looks pretty chill but the man seems stressed. I think the picture is trying to show that both animals and humans have the same ability to do things. Not only human can think or play game but animals could too. That means the have same level of knowledge.

Faith (AP Lit)

I agree that the gorilla does look laidback and not at all stressed, compared to the man. Regarding what you said about humans and animals being equal, I think that although humans are the current dominant species, I think it's important to remember our roots. After all, we came from apes, so in a way, we are one and the same, but are an upgraded version.

I totally agree on how gorilla can obtain the same ability as human. They’re as capable as humans, however, the humans may overlook that factor of gorilla’s ability.

This photo is jam-packed with details and has lots of elements to interpret. To be frank, this photo confuses me and there’s no one theme that comes to mind. After lengthy pondering, I do have a few thoughts that I am confident in. First, it’s obvious to me that the ape is winning in the game of chess, which is interesting because apes are considered a lesser version of humans since they are our evolutionary ancestor. Second, the placement of the crown near the man is to convey thats humans are the superior species. All in all, I think this photo shows that looks can be deceiving.

Nina (Creative Writing Block B & AP Lit)
10/8/2021 08:36:22 am

I think there are many ways to interpret this picture, for me this pictures screams arrogance. There is a crown behind the old man who looks frustrated at the ongoing chess game, while the monkey has a smirk on his face. The old man probably thought he wouldn't have any trouble winning against a monkey but the arrogance we have as human made him underestimated his opponent. I think the crown behind the old man symbolizes power, but in the picture the man is shown as powerless, therefore the crown actually means nothing because he has no power over his opponent. The crown is only powerful if the wearer is.

Jack Eng9 Block C&G

In my opinion, I think this picture is trying to tell us that everybody is different. If you are that man and not as smart as the monkey, it's fine because we're not all the same. We all have different personalities, we like different things, and many more... The man in the picture also shows that he's kind of stress as well, I think he's stressed about how he's not as smart as the monkey. And also for the people who are feeling left out, depressed, disappointed, or stressed just because they're not smart as others, I think it's wrong to think like that. Everyone is not "dumb," we all are good at different things, and absolutely no one except every single person on earth to be the exact same.

Sinny (Creative Writing Block F)

This picture isn't that eye-catching at first, but it became so fascinating afterward. There're lots of details (or you can say controversies) in the picture, take the chimpanzee and the old man as an example, the chimpanzee looked pretty relaxed with a cigarette in its mouth, but the old man looked a bit stressed compared to his rival, which is a pretty interesting phenomenon, because normally we would think human is smarter, but the human in this picture seems to lost his confidence in front of the chimpanzee. There's another interesting point–the crown on the kings (chess) of both sides switched the color, and it somehow formed a suspicious contrast with the chimpanzee and old man's skin color. There're more details, and each detail could have a clear meaning behind it when the explanation comes individually, but when we interpret them as a whole, the meaning isn't that easy to define anymore.

NoyNoy creative writing block f

I agree on how you descriptively describe the different features in the picture that symbolize something from the picture. Your analysis show more than what we can normally observe. I also just realize about the old man’s skin color and how its meaning can impact the picture.

Mike (English 9)
10/8/2021 09:14:12 am

The man got bored and call one of his "friends" to play chess with him. This picture shows that the man is losing to his "friend" and he is thinking hard on what to move next. The "friend" is actually a gorilla, who can be smart like humans. This gorilla however, is beating him, he be like smokin' and chillin' at the same time.

NoyNoy creative writing block f
10/8/2021 09:19:38 am

From my standpoint, I think the picture is expressing the real truth that humans may not agree with. The chimpanzee seems to be more relaxing while competing with a man who’s suppose to be winning. The crown on top can also represent the expectation of the man that in reality, the general would expect him to overcome the chess match with victory.

Roman (Creative Writing Block B)

I like how you explained about self to the world. You said about the reality how people would expect the man to win. It is very true when you explained about that.

We, humans, are evolving from animals. We adapt ourselves to the environment and society in order to stay survive. We might think that we are better than other animals but actually, we are not different from them. Our brain is also not much different from them but we can control ourselves more, however, we shouldn't think that we are higher class but should be kind to living things. Sometimes some animals are also better than some people ;)

Roman (Creative Writing Block B)

This picture displays a monkey and human playing chess together. It could be inferred as how different types of animals have different types of abilities. Like what many people have stated we're not supposed to judge the book by its cover. Sometimes a monkey can even show a better performance than humans.

Jia Ying (English 9 )
10/8/2021 11:30:05 am

This picture is telling us is to not look down on others ethnicity and class because we ourselves all used to start from the bottom and you will never know what the others are actually planning to rise to the top. Here we can that the old man playing chess with a chimpanzee is struggling beating that chimpanzee in chess. Meanwhile the chimpanzee that's smoking with a cup of wine on the side has a poker face on the game was practically a breeze to the chimp. We will never know what his next move is to beat the human or even when chimpanzees will rule the Earth on day, so beware!
