Low-fat Pig

10/31/2017

According to news reports, Chinese scientists have genetically modified pigs and "created" pigs with 24% less body fat than normal pigs. The plan is to make pig meat less expensive and "healthier" for human consumption, so they genetically modified pig genes with rat genes to make their body temperatures rise in colder weather. Slimmer pigs? Healthier meat: bacon, pork, ham and pork rinds.

Comment on the following prompt: To what extent should scientists manipulate genes to create genetically modified foods for the sake of artificially "fixing" the health of humans, instead of encouraging exercise?

Scientist should have the full accessibility to do gene modification if its for a healthy cause. Most people feel as if pork is unhealthy and can cause diseases so i believe that scientist doing this is perfectly fine. As this will bring up new consumers who thought that pork was really sickening to eat and not as clean, into eating pork. Using modifications on animals isn't new so them trying to modify pigs to make not only healthier pig, but healthier meat is great. This is a great thing to happen to not only the pigs but to people who enjoy eating meat. I personally believe that this will be a great way to get people into eating more meat.

Why should more people shift to eating meat? Honestly a lot of people who eat less or even no meat seem to be better off. Also you really want to eat a skinny rat pig, because if they're fusing it with rat genes you're still eating those chemically infused genes. It also can be hazardous the animals, creating mutant offspring, if they can even reproduce at all! Also if something has to be tampered and readjusted with chemicals of another animal then maybe it's not the best thing for you to be consuming on the daily.

The more people eat pork, the more risky for them to catch a disease or be strongly unhealthy because of chemical they put inside the meat to get the texture that most people like. The more people eat less meat, the more healthier they will be. Pork is nothing but fattening that people take out of poor animals in store inside are bodies. Most people say that meat is good for you because, it makes you stronger and be healthy. But that's not true because, pork makes you slow down in life in make it easier chance for you to catch a disease or worse. Scientists say that they clean it but really they just wash it off the blood off and pass it on to next station. Therefore I disagree with you

I do not agree with your statement because yes everyone knows that a pig is not the healthiest and the cleanest animal, but combining a rat and a pig won't make the animal any healthier or cleaner. Also, you can not "get people to eat more meat" if they are not already eating meat and enjoying it now.

I have to disagree. If people feel as though pork itself is unhealthy, imagine how they would feel about pork with rat genes in it? Sure, scientists have been using genetic modifications for a long time, but that doesn't mean it's healthier for humans to consume these products. Also, why should people eat more meat? Eating less meat is actually a more healthier lifestyle.

My opinion on this matter is that every time man tries to play God, there is always a awful consequences.I think scientist genetically modifying pigs for the better health of people is a terrible idea. Who knows the repercussions this breakthrough can have. I think this discovery could influence other scientist to modify an element that shouldn’t be changed. Instead of changing the fundamental anatomy of nature we should teach people about their consumption and how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Your comment reminded of when Mrs. D said something along the lines of “ they make medicine that mimics fruit” when she was talking about the time she had pneumonia. You and Mrs. D are right. “When man tries to play God, there is always an awful consequence” that will always be true. When scientists create medicine, especially for serious illnesses, the patient can become worst. For example, a cancer patient who received chemotherapy may have a weakened heart after their treatment. This goes to show that everything that is artificially made is not good for human health.

I honestly believe it isn't that good of an idea because you're tampering with natural elements of nature. And even besides the fact that it harms the animals it's harms humans as well. They're trying to make healthier meat but they're fusing a pig with not only chemicals, but chemicals and genes from a rat. So this 'healthier' meat you're eating is unnatural and a fusion of some chemicals that obviously will be recalled later and that can clearly cause sickness.

Pigs are unsanitary and so are rats. Mixing the two sounds like a disaster as is. But to have people consume this things is mind boggling. I can only think that the consumption of this mutated pig will lead to a biological disaster.

I. Florence
11/1/2017 08:31:51 pm

Rats are the guinea pigs for science. Before chemicals and medicine are allowed to be accessed by the public, rats had them first. In addition, rats carry diseases (Bubonic plague for example), just imagined if pigs happened to inherit this trait from the rats. Not to mention that large amounts of pigs are confined to small spaces. This "new and improved" pig would mean more pigs in small spaces leading to unsanitary conditions and diseases that human can consume.

D.Parker, 1st

rats shouldn't be test subjects for science, especially for anything involving humans. we are two different species and have different needs genetically. infusing pigs and rats could lead to diseases similar to mad cow disease or something worse. i don't believe that it's ethical or safe to test an experiment like this and offer it for human consumption.

Scientists should not manipulate genes to create genetically modified foods for the sake of artificially “fixing” the health of humans. Artificial, man-made food will never be better than natural food created the by nature. If anything, artificially made food is worse than natural food because of the added chemicals and hormones. For example, if you were to read the back of an average pack of noodles, you would not be able to pronounce all of the ingredients or know what they are. If scientists really wanted humans to be healthy, they would encourage exercising and natural foods. I say this because scientists know the dangers of having a sedentary lifestyle and man-made chemicals.

At times , scientific advancements can be beneficial to humans. But mutating a pig because a person does not know how to maintain a diet is sickening. Instead of manipulating pig genes, why don't scientists educate the general public on what a healthy diet is? Creating this thing to have "healthier" results will simply create more health problems because you don't know how a human body will react to this concoction. I feel like they only provide alternatives not only to play with God, but to make us sick. Higher rates of illnesses results in more money being spent on medicinal purposes.

pork itself is a very unhealthy meat and known for causing clogged arteries, which lead to heart issues and high cholesterol. genetic modification isn't always a good thing either. if something has to be changed scientifically in order to be healthier, it isn't healthy. many people may not react well to genetically modified meat, especially if infused with rats, which are very unclean anyway.

Genetic modification is good in some cases. But to genetically modify food to have less fat because people are overweight is ridiculous. If you want people to be healthy and still eat meat, take care of the animals before slaughter and make it affordable! There is no need to falsely advertise meat other than to cause harm. Other than providing reasonable choices, people should have access to information regarding how to eat healthy.

aising pigs for food is a tricky business—mostly because of their fat, the part that makes bacon so tasty. You can’t plump them up too much, because overly fat pigs are more expensive to raise. Since they’re not as efficient at burning body fat, thewarm quire more energy in the form of heated pens and barnsto keep them warm.

Scientist should not take genes from a disease infested animal, put it into a very profitable meat source, such as a pig, and claim that they did it because it is healthier. This manipulation of genes can affect the meat itself and cause harm to whomever is eating it. Eating diseases isn't good for a human in any way. If you want to see more healthy people then encourage eating less meat, especially pork. I'm not saying that people have to go vegan, but constantly eating that foods like that isn't good. By, stating that this meat is now supposedly healthier, it will encourage a greater consumption of it. It is possible they are doing this solely for the money and not for health reasons.

To understand your statement better, are you implying that by transferring a temperature controlling gene from a rat into thee DNA of a pig, it will potentially cause the pig to acquire a disease from the rat?(if the rat carried a disease) If this was what you were trying to convey, i must disagree with this part of your statement. the technology used is precise and only transferred the gene that controls temperature, there is no way i see a disease being transferred. the results are replicated, the pigs may represent new agricultural potential: leaner pigs that don’t get cold, don’t cost as much to raise and make potentially healthier, lower-fat bacon. But don’t expect these pigs to fly in the U.S. anytime soon. Because they are genetically modified, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would have to approve them after being reassured that the meat they produce is safe to eat. The safety of CRISPR hasn’t been completely proven yet, either; some researchers point out that as precise as CRISPR is, it’s still not perfect. I hope that they do not modify every pig because the world still needs natural things in it, even most humans are not natural.

The key to being healthy is changing your diet, not altering the composition of the foods in your current diet. Scientists shouldn't genetically modify meat to that extent. It's dangerous, especially with the germs and disease that rats are susceptible to. Also, it doesn't seem as if modifying these pigs are too cost effective, and something would have to give to make this "solution" work. Does that mean making the processing of these meats less sanitary ti be able to afford the modifications? The disadvantages of these genetically modified "healthy" pigs outweigh the benefits.

I have to agree with you because there are consequences to all the actions. People should change something in their daily basis to become healthier instead of just getting some type of food that does not contain so much fat as it used to.

I agree. There are more disadvantages when it comes to these pigs that are supposed to be "healthy." Rats are exposed to many germs and diseases and when humans consume this so called "pork", it can cause a negative impact, health wise.

I think that these scientists should not genetically modify pigs because their meat is unhealthy. If people know it's unhealthy to eat pigs, then that's their choice to stop eating it. What if there is some people that actually enjoy eating pigs? Why would these scientists prevent people from eating what they love? The scientists should leave the pigs alone and keep them how they are. Let people eat what they want to eat.

Genetically modifying pig meat, and reducing it's body fat does not make it healthy. I just makes it less toxic than it was before. Most people have different blood types meaning, they have certain foods that are good for them and foods that are not. For example, pork, ham, and bacon, these are foods blood type O Positive cannot eat.

With all honesty, reducing its body fat, with rat genes, is not healthy for the pig and human. In disagreement, it makes it more toxic, to eat pig, due to the added checmicals, in the pig. In agreement, most people’s blood type, do determine what is good for them and what is bad for them to eat. With all honesty, people with blood type O, cannot eat, those certain foods. Lastly, it is inhumane to change pig meat, because it can kill them or kill a human, when they eat that pig, injected with the rat genes.

I disagree and Agree at the same time. I really think that using rat genes to make slimmer pigs is over the limit. They say that pigs cause diseases. That's why they are injected with many antibiotics and other substances. Pork are injected with antibiotics for they won't get sick in the poor living conditions. They also are injected with harmones that make them bigger and fatter. They do that because of the big demand of poultry, anyways at least I know I don't consume all those genes, antibiotics, and harmones because I don't eat poultry.

I think that scientists are wrong for using genes in pork if they would like to make pigs healthier they should just make the pig healthy I also think it’s totally wrong for scientists to put genes from something else in a pig which meaning to me that it is no longer pig meat instead it’s meat full of chemicals .

In today's time genetic modifying is very conman. So, it isn't a big shocker that scientists are now trying to make what a lot of people think is unhealthy and fating into something health. But the question is how can this possibly work when there using rat genes. The rat is known to be an unwanted and unclean pest. I feel when people find that there bacon has been infused with rat genes its going to make the bacon even more less appealing. so, its really up to the buyers.

I feel as scientists should have the right to modify meats, such as pork. Why not be healthier? There is a large group of people who eat pork, & spend there money on it so maybe reducing the fat of the pig is a better fit for humanity. Exercise would be the better route to go, but if there is a way to reduce the fat in meat & be able to get the more healthier portion, then great.

scientist should experiment to know what works and could be better for the community. Also people should be able to have a say in what is good for their own health, maybe someone can have a reaction for the way that that meat was modify. The encouragement to excise wouldn't be so bad.

In my opinion, i believe that scientists should only manipulate genes to make foods safe to eat, other than that, they should not make any other changes to food. The choice of being healthy is on the people. Eating healthy is like a self choir. You need to make yourself responsible for you do and do not eat. Changes to make food more "healthy" is unnecessary. Thats why we have diets and exercise.

I believe scientist should not be able to genetically modify pigs even if it is to make the pig a "healthier" food choice for humans. No matter what modifying an animal is wrong no matter the cause because it's going to have some kind of effect on that animal. Pigs and other animals should not go through experiments and be tortured and harmed for the "benefits" of humans. I believe that altering the genetic code of anything that’s edible is wrong. Reason being is that we consume these products and it could harm us. Say if the change the code of a pig and you ate that pig and ended up losing your eyesight then you’re out of luck. Yeah it can make it easier to loose weight but it’s not helping too much if you just going to eat it the same as the regular thing. Let’s just leave the genetic codes alone and get up and exercise.

The genetic/chemical modification of food should really be kept at a low. Depending on how our food is manipulated, it can damage our bodies or can be really unsanitary. It is a much more natural and healthier method to encourage exercise rather than put rat genes or other hazardous things in our food. Also, by modifying food, scientists are taking away from a very important part of health, which is exercise. What good comes out of teaching our future generations that caring for themselves and their bodies isn't important? The only things this will lead to is scientists further damaging our society and our morals.I'm pretty sure everyone would agree that nobody wants to eat rat gene infested chicken.

With all honesty, it is never alright to manipulate genes, to create creations like this. First of all, rats carry nasty diseases, that can get people sick, or even make them die. However, this does make the pig skinny, but, you are putting chemicals in pigs, making pig meat, not healthy for human consumption. To me, I rather buy expensive and not healthy pig meat, than buy less expensive, chemical contaminated pig meat. In again, it is never alright to manipulate genes. With that being said, they should let them pigs lose that weight naturally, by encouraging or making the pigs workout.

Ty Smith 6th

I don’t believe that scientists should be given a lot of freedom to manipulate genes to create genetically modified. The thought of pig genes being genetically modified with rat genes to make “healthier meat” does not sound appealing. If they were to do this, wouldn’t we be eating eat as well? How safe is rat to eat? Where are these rats coming from? I don’t think changing the genetic makeup of pork will make it healthier because it still coming partly from the same source that makes it unhealthy.

S. Moncivais 4th

Scientist manipulate genes for many reasons. The modified foods have less fat, but it should not be like that, because it does not help the health of humans. The scientist should encourage people to exercise more often instead of eating something that supposed to help. People should be aware of the consequences that any modified type of food can affect instead of help. Therefore having pigs that are genetically modifies should not be there for people to eat, they should be able to grow healthy, so they can be normal in a way.

D. Moseley-4th/5th Pd
11/3/2017 11:54:58 pm

I agree with your statement Ms.Moncivais and I believe that animals should be left out of the equation when it comes to gene manipulation. Just as humans care about their own well being we have to take into consideration that we are not only messing with a life but we are taking away from Mother Earth.

B. Haynes 1st
11/3/2017 11:18:27 pm

Scientists should not manipulate genes to “fix” the health of humans, if it should even be considered that. Many plants humans eat today are a result of genetic modifications done by scientists that would never take place in nature. To me, even if modifying a certain food makes it healthier—which I doubt it would—there are still extra hormones and chemicals inside of them that can cause all kinds of trouble within our bodies. If scientists really want to improve the health of humans, they wouldn’t create and encourage us to eat these man made fruits that are supposed to be better than the natural version. Instead, we should become more aware of the things we consume, because a lot of time it’s most definitely not food.

Z. James 1st
11/3/2017 11:21:45 pm

Scientist shouls not be able to manipulate gene to create genetically modified food. Poultry is not already healthy anyway so why try to add artificial substances in it to make it healthier. People should make time to exercise and eat right. Instead of depending on products that have materials that can kill you. Instead of being lazy and depending on unhealthy food to make you healthy why not take the initiative to get healthy on your own.

R. Garcia 1st
11/3/2017 11:42:29 pm

I do not think scientists should manipulate genes to create genetically modified foods for the sake of fixing the health of humans, instead of encouraging exercise. I don't think they should manipulate the genes of pigs because of the consequences and moral issues involved. Introducing a new gene into the pig’s DNA could generate new potential allergenic proteins, thus making people sick. Not only that but, I think that when using gene editing technology, the technology should be used for treatment, and not for cutting corners, or for vanity purposes. What i think makes this situation wrong is, how it shows our laziness as humans. That is that we have resorted to genetically modifying our food, because the simple task of exercising or eating correctly has not been successful in resolving our obesity problem.

D.Moseley-4th/5th Pd
11/3/2017 11:52:06 pm

As a omnivore, I believe scientist should not manipulate the genes of organisms that are up for human consumption. If it’s not natural, it satisfies the current want but in the end the result is harmful long term. Eating animals isn’t exactly healthy anyways so to be eating meat on top of extra hormones could lead to an early death. Instead of trying to manipulate the foods consumed a better idea would be to promote healthier lifestyles including better eating habits. It my food is molecularly modified I don’t want it. Not only will effect me but it’ll cause issues with my offsprings .

J.Bonilla - 4th

Exercise is not only put into place for the body to make up for the poor eating habits. Exercise helps improve the performance of sleep, as well as improving moods. Scientists should not manipulate the genes of foods to artificially “fix” the health of humans, because for everything there is always a downfall. Adding ingredients or modifying something will change the chemical composition of the body because it would not be accustomed to the new food. Modifying life stock, would be selfish because they were not put on this world for us to eat them, the benefits would only be to us and not them.

While I myself do not indulge in genetically modified meat products. I will agree to the fact that if there are viable benefits to genetically modifying pig that it should be done to no extent. While some may argue that GMO’s are bad because you don’t know what big-name companies inject into their products, the amount of positive possibilities cannot be ignored. For example, poverty causes people to miss out on many nutrients because of their inability to purchase high-quality food. However, with the use of GMO‘s, companies can provide those people with a nutritious product for a little price. This example alone could single-handedly have a major impact on one of the worlds biggest problems. All along anything can be bad for you, but if the possible results are worth the risk I’m willing to take it.

Z.Williams

Food should not be modified at all, food should naturally be grown and preserved through natural resources such as salt. Genetically modified food is not at all healthy for the body, the cells that read the things we place into our body are unable to properly break down the substances that modify natural food causing people to have diabetes and weight problems that become nearly permanent. Because the earth is over populated, the idea of genetically processed food has been thought of, in order to feed the world food would have to be larger but at the cost of people's health.

Summer Johnskn 1st

Food should have never been genetically modified in the beginning it should’ve been all natural and no preservatives. Scientists trying to make the food more “healthier” just makes it worse because we still are constantly consuming the meat which causes multiple diseases. Therefore, scientists shouldn’t modify the meat at all. If we want to get healthier then we should cut out meat and stick to plant based foods and not listening to ads that say “healthier foods”. In conclusion , scientists should be witheld from creating new products for meat for a better lifestyle.

i think meat should not be modified. its not right to change the DNA. If people feel as though pork itself is
unhealthy Most people say that meat is good for you and it makes you stronger and be healthy. Eating less meat is actually a more healthier lifestyle.
