Guns in schools. Are we ready? How would you feel if you had a pistol packing teacher for your English or Math class? Or the class you fell asleep in every day?

After the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting last month in Parkland, Florida, Trump wants to arm teachers. In some states, teachers think it's a crazy idea. In other states, like Ohio, teachers are already packing.

"Doesn't it get to be too much," asked Brianne Solomon, a teacher in West Virginia. "On top of all the things we do, to have to remember when we're supposed to use a gun?"

A guidance counselor in Baltimore, Maryland, thinks often about a time he had to tackle a student to the ground who shot a classmate in the back with a gun in their school's cafeteria.

He told the New York Times, "Never have I thought, 'I wish I'd had a gun,'" and that he thinks the president's idea of arming teachers is "simplistic and misguided."

On the other hand, according to the New York Times, "more than 100 districts in Texas" have been arming teachers with weapons since 2007, and Dallas Republican and State Representative Jason Villalba thinks that the president has recognized that teachers carrying guns is "clearly...the solution to the problem that we're seeing around the country."

And the world, continues to turn...

Schools will lose more students because they are afraid and no longer feel safe. This will make students feel useless and have no power over themselves. Arming teachers will affect the parents as well hving concerns for their childs safety. For Students, parents and teachers safety it will be easier to increase police presence, hiring more security guards, and installing metal detectors, security cameras.Schools will never as safe as they used to be but with teachers being armed it will make it worst.

In agreement, students would feel unsafe, because some teachers would take advantage of the idea of having guns, and would mistreat the privilege. With all honesty, they would be so scared of being themselves, due to the fear of being shot , by a teacher. In fact, parents would be concerned and scared, that they would just home-school their kids, to decrease the risk of their child being shot by a teacher. With all honesty, this is the better idea for school safety , because it will keep teacher gun related incidents down. In conclusion, it would be worst, because it will result in shootouts and mistreatment of people, at schools.

I want to emphasize the point you made about students being afraid to be themselves. This is something I completely agree with. Especially now that we live in a world where everybody is triggered and offended, including some teachers that I know. Imagine giving that triggered person a gun. The minute you say something they don't like, your brain will be splattered onto the wall behind you.

Yes, because if I were a parent I would not be comfortable knowing my kid is at school with someone armed. The mind set of Donald Trump may be that having the guns will conjure up fear within someone who poses a threat to the school, but that would be far from the truth. Everyone is saying that upping security and adding metal detectors would be costly but all in all it would cost more to buy all these teachers guns, buy bullets, train them, and get them registered and certified. The process of that would rack in more fees than just getting more security procedures in place. Not only that but where would these teacher store these guns, would they take them home, would they keep them at school. Who knows what would happen to these guns if they were to leave the premise of the school. They could end up in anyone's hands, and then the teacher would be at fault.

if i may add The argument that's always is made is how the school shooter has a mental illness. Who's to say one of the teachers wouldn't. One simply thing might set them off and set it off . The cost of arming all the teachers with guns , getting bullets , getting them in training and certified will be more than teachers make a year . There's no point in harming teachers with guns because they still might not own their ground against a shooter .

Schools will develop a low student body population. A reason being would be fear of being shot/wounded by their own teacher. Parents would think the worse for their children everyday that their child enters a school building, so they'll remove for them for safety. Students might become defiant and bring guns which will get the student killed. Guns should not be in the school system at all. Children should not have to run from bullets.

If teachers in our school are ever allowed to carry guns, my living room will become my classroom, my bedroom will be my library, my backyard will be my gym, and my kitchen would be my cafeteria because there is no way I would feel safe learning from armed teachers. Teachers are easily agitated when students become boisterous, now add a loaded gun to that. Agitation and guns are like hot oil and water, when they integrate, an unfortunate event happens. In this case, the unfortunate event would be death. In addition, more students would drop out, which will either lead to an increase in homeschooling or high school dropouts.

In understanding, understudies will be dangerous, For instance, a few educators can have a weapon and can be the shooter , This will make a few understudies pointless from their self, In actuality guardians can be extremely terrified in light of the fact that their is a shooter and that they would self-teach their children to diminish less shootings in school and children by biting the dust in schools and instructors

D Parker 1st
3/4/2018 12:04:30 am

The above statement is well-thought out and articulate. I would not feel comfortable coming to school if I knew my teachers were carrying guns around. A teacher can easily turn on a student or another staff member and harm them. Schools can be safer, but there is only so much we can do to stop school shootings. Giving teachers weapons is not the way to go.

D. Tonche 1st

I think this proposal to have public teachers armed is ludicrous, and redundant to the safety of adolescents. Not only do we not know the mental stability of teachers, how we can we make sure students don't find their way to these weapons? In my opinion this decree will increase gun incidents, and will diminish our countries nobility. I expect the overall environment will turn antipathetic and this will be damaging to students. To conclude my narrative, I think having armed teachers will have a negative effect to students.

I. Chancellor 1st/5th period

In agreement, it would be ludicrous and going against the safety of adolescents. Not only if they find the weapon, but also, will they try to harm staff and students with it. Plus, a teacher can be a sociopath, and don't know it and if an event triggers it, they can cause a school wide massacre. With all honesty, it will increase teacher related incidents, hurting our reputation, as country, around the world. Indeed, it would be very antipathetic, hurting student's safety at school. In conclusion, giving teachers gun, will negatively affect students, because some teachers will try to intimidate or harm the students or other staff members, with it.

K. Brown 1st hour

Exactly. If the teachers are armed then students will get a hold of these weapons, it is truly inevitable. It is also true that the mental state of teachers needs to be put on the podium of attention, we don't know what is going through there minds. Background checks mean nothing against what can be done through the future, people 'snapping' is a real thing. We don't know how an adult may react with a gun until they are truly put into the situation where they are forced to use the gun, or when they are not in the best of mind and have access to the gun.

The whole idea of arming teachers is ludicrous. There are many faults to this idea all in vain of 'keeping the kids safe". There is no way of knowing if these teachers are sane and if the students are going to act appropriately around guns. Arming teachers is an accident waiting to happen.

I. Florence 1st

Whoever proposed this idea and the others who support it are oblivious to what transpires in school's today, because if they did, the idea would asinine. There is an innumerable amount of videos that show teachers who are clearly being threatened by a student and are encompassed by fear and agitation. If you were to bring a gun into the situation, the situation would escalate to an unreachable height. Now imagine that actually taking place, (because it does). Would the person who proposed this ludicrous idea feel safe in this situation? No, they would not.

S.Moncivais 4th

I have to agree with you Ms.Tonche because having weapons in school would become an issue for tbe not only because we would not know the mental stability of the teacher but also if a student gets the weapons what about him, what is his mental state? With all honesty, schools would be unsafe and a bloody war. For example, out of fear, parents would arm their kids with guns, so they could protect themselves, from dangerous teachers. To tell the truth, some teachers would abuse the idea of having guns at school, by threatening students and co-workers. For instance, if the students were packing up, due to the period almost being over, and the teacher shows the gun stating,"Who dismisses ya"ll, me and thunder (gun) or the clock." I need to concur. Weapons and state funded schools shouldn't blend .I would have believed that the current school shooting would have sent that message however evidently not. K. Brown 1st hour
3/3/2018 02:24:13 am

The thought of arming teachers with guns sounds like a ridiculous idea. The issue is that people are bringing GUNS into the school and shooting. So how much sense does it make that instead of upping security and placing metal detectors in school that we are bringing the problem into the school and placing it in the hands of teachers. Instead of having the effect of protection it would result in a war zone, a shoot out. Not to mention the possibility of trigger happy teachers, students getting their hands on the guns, and the simple fact that I as a student would not feel safe knowing my teachers had a gun they could just whip out. How much sense does it really make for us to be fighting guns with more guns in a place where guns should never be, if we really wanted to keep students safe we would up security. This steady stream of fighting fire with fire only makes so much sense, by giving teachers guns we are feeding the flames of violence and stupidity.

Security is in fact an issue, take our school for example. We have 0, I mean absolutely no protection from anything. In the morning, a stranger armed with a gun could walk into the building completely unbothered. From there we're screwed, because it isn't like our police officers would do much. Instead of arming teachers with guns, we need to be upping security.

School would be a chaotic battle between students and staff. Students will feel intimidated by their teachers and will bring guns of their own. Then there are teachers who will abuse their right to have a gun, just to enforce them to put up their phone. Instead of going to training for education, teachers will be going to training for learning how to shoot a gun. Teachers would have to learn how to disarm a child. Students may have to wear a bulletproof vest just to go to school. It is a shame that in this day in age "guns" and "school system" are still used in the same sentence.

If schools were to allow their teachers to hold guns that would be a disaster due to the fact that it is a active and functioning gun that is in hands reach for a student to grab. This means that a school school shooter doesn't have to buy a gun and instead the gun is right with the teacher. This could put the teachers life in danger and create a quicker school shooting to happen. This could also be reversed as well because a teacher could get so mad at a student that he or she could shoot the student if a situation comes up. This will make the school atmosphere more uncomfortable knowing that your teacher has a gun and if you were to push that teacher far enough you could be shot. The better solution would be to get better security and maybe have cops stand next too classrooms and monitor the students. Final solution could be having student check up lines as they enter schools to check for any harmful weapons or anything else.

Giving teachers guns could cause more problems. A teacher could be the one who decides to shoot up the school and giving them a gun issued by the state makes it that much easier. Also, students love to be nosy and dig around in some teachers desks. How would these guns be stored? Having guns in the school also supplies the school shooter. They could shoot the teacher and take their gun and bullets. Giving teachers guns shouldn't even be a solution. Many schools have police officers on campus. The idea that teachers should have guns seems ridiculous to me. How do we know if a teacher is mentally stable enough to have possession of a gun? Teachers are human too which mean that they can make the same decisions as any regular human being. Who's to say that a teacher won't get frustrated and decide to solve their problem by shooting up their class room? Or maybe the teacher isn't as strong as a student which allows the student to over power the teacher leading in the student having complete access to a gun. Teachers having guns will cause a bigger problem then the one that is at hand. Not all teachers are mentally stable enough to handle that responsibility. Plus, having a teacher walking around carrying a gun can and most likely will make the students feel uncomfortable. They will feel as if they have been punished or like they are in jail. Arming teachers will have a negative impact on schools. The student teacher relationship will become tense as students start to fear teachers instead of respecting them. The amount of training needed to know how to properly handle arms is simply another training that will add onto the stress teachers deal with. Not only will students feel unsafe with armed teachers, but so will the parents. Not only are the relationships going to become tense, there is always the possibility of an accident. Whether the arm goes off by accident or a teacher loses his or her cool, the possibility of an accident remains.

If teachers were allowed to arm themselves with guns, schools would become war zones due to trepidation and aversion of both teachers and students. When you fear someone, you will go to great lengths to protect yourself if you think they are a threat to you. For example, a teacher may fear a large, pugnacious student, out of fear, the teacher may call campus security, but with a gun, they can just shoot them. And the same goes for students. If students are apprehensive towards their teachers or have a distaste for them, they will also bring guns to school to feel protected from the teacher.

The idea of my teacher having a gun to protect other lives is crazy to me. Teachers come to school to teach not to protect, that's why we have police officers. What if the teacher end up getting shot, then who's going to protect us. What if the teacher miss places the gun and a students finds it,anything can happen.Teachers do not need guns to protect the lives of students they need better security. They need a better solution then more guns in school. If anything they need no guns.

The absurd idea of arming teachers with guns came from the weak brain of a simpleton, nothing more. Teachers are human beings just like the rest of us- they get angry and they snap. Who's to say they won't abuse their authority with these guns? What if a student gets their hands on these weapons? What if teachers start arguing and decide, "You know what? Why am I arguing with you when I can end this right now?" Because apparently, it's okay for adults to run rampant with guns in a high school. We can't fight fire with fire, and in this case, all this solution would accomplish is scaring students from coming to school.

While you are statement holds significant truth, I do not agree. To an extent arming teachers could be a dangerous idea. However, they would be no more dangerous than the law enforcement officers who we trust with the safety of our communities, that have killed innocent people without clear reason. I firmly believe that arming teachers could act as a deterrent to school crime.

Allowing teachers to carry guns would make a supposedly “safe” space more dangerous. There are so many issues that could arise with having guns in the school. For instance, a student could potentially find the weapon, or a teacher could be mentally unstable. This proposal would only make the school environment worse, especially for students. If we want to have safer schools, instead of having guns, we should have metal detectors at each entrance. Guns are not always the solution to safety.

If teachers were to be armed in schools, schools would become hostile and inadequate environments of learning. While guns offer a sense of security to the possessor, they also provoke feelings of insecurity in those around the weapon, feelings caused by the possessor's unpredictability. When arming teachers, this detail should be taken into consideration, especially because many are under constant stress from students and other staff. Who is to know that one day the teacher reaches the tipping point and uses the weapon inappropriately.

I agree. Teachers, while being adults, are also unpredictable and can be stressed to the point of violence against students and other staff. Knowing that teachers are carrying will make students feel unsafe, in their work habits and freedoms of expression.

i believe our opinions about this topic are identical. Teachers are under a great amount of stress dealing with disrespectful students, an abundance of work, and everyday life. Giving could very much make the safety of the students worse.

The ideas of teachers carrying firearms in schools is a bad idea on many levels.I've endeavored to envision how gun pressing instructors may change the idea of a school, and the connection amongst understudies and educators. Will understudies now prompt each other, "Don't get captured content informing in material science class! That educator is bolted and stacked!" Will principals who procure new instructors now say, "Well, his school proposals aren't solid. In any case, he's won marksmanship awards." And will educators now tap a lump under their jackets and reprove understudies, "alright, class, do I need to remind you what happens on the off chance that I don't get those essays. All kid will literally be scared out of their minds.

I feel that teachers shouldn't have guns because what if the teacher get mad and just pull out an gun on a student ? Then they will make this not a law anymore i feel if we have a school shootings or anything that the school should be secured anyways. What if the teacher accidentally shoot something and scare the kids ? That will make people transfer some where else. This is why i say no guns at school !.

Schools will lose more understudies since they are perplexed and never again feel safe. This will influence understudies to feel pointless and have no control over themselves. Furnishing instructors will influence the guardians too hving worries for their childs safety. For Students, parents and educators wellbeing it will be less demanding to build police nearness, enlisting greater security monitors, and introducing metal locators, security cameras.Schools will never as sheltered as they used to be yet with educators being outfitted it will make it most exceedingly terrible.

Teachers having guns will bring up even more issues of safety within a classroom. Teachers are stressed, frustrated with a plethora of uncooperative students, and confined to administrative approval on most things. A teacher having a gun can be dangerous, simply because they’re surrounded by all of these lamentable situations. In an environment of learning and social interactions, ideas and opinions are being said in multiple ways. Things like debating in a classroom or arguing with a peer can get very heated. Who’s to say a student won’t get pushed to the point of finding the teacher’s gun and using it out of anger or frustration? Weapons in institutions of learning, teacher or otherwise, is the last thing that would solve school safety issues.

W. Crawford III 1st

All things considered schools would remain the same. The thought of my teacher being armed doesn’t alarm me because guns don’t kill people; however those who hold them can. If Viable precautions are taken when conducting background searches on teachers there should be no fear in students’ hearts. We entrust armed police officers with keeping our communities safe. So why not make the extra effort to protect children who are our future? The idea of arming teachers seems like a good one; the idea of teachers being armed alone, could act as a deterrent for criminals within itself.

I disagree with you Jeremiah Solomon. We can't even trust police officers with guns.Atleast not us minorities. At any time even when the right precautions are taken,The teacher might go through something that angers him/her and be so angry that he/she takes it out on other people.

if teachers were armed with guns in school many students will be afraid that something can happen to them during school, even thought it suppose to be safe. The teachers could use the weapons as something to take advantage of the kid. For example if they have a grudge against the student or they get mad at the moment they could react and use the gun to do harm or take control . The learning would not be the same as before, maybe some students will behave better giving the fact that a teacher have a gun and they are scared. Having guns at school would not solve the issue that we are having right now, this could increase gun sell and also it could be more dangerous that already is.

J.Carire P-6

I think more school shootings might happen if we arm teachers. We never know when a teacher might lose his/her temper and shoot a kid for something little.I feel like some teachers might try to use guns to intimidate kids when they don't need the gun.Like let's say a student stands up and walks up to a teacher in a confrontational way, that teacher might pull out his/her gun to try to intimidate the student.

Teachers having the right too have a gun too “protect” themselves and others will not solve the school shooting problem it’ll only add fire to the flame. Everyone has feelings and a mindset, including a teacher, so what will stop them for becoming angry and taking it out on the school just like students from recent stories? Although teachers have a job and a responsibility they’re human and all humans have will power. Therefore, i disagree on letting teachers have guns it is redundant and useless to the situation. It may even entice the teachers too act as a superior by threatening kids and parents, so school would become a constant fear and war if guns were allowed.

C. Villanueva 1st

If schools have armed guns it would be a nightmare coming true for many. Students and teachers are already scared of weapons near them and for more guns its just terrible. People have been traumitized by all these events so schools would be a place many parents would not want their children going to. Classrooms would be empty as many chose to have their kids homeschooled.

J. Butler

Completely true! Adding more guns to the “safety arguement” doesn’t solve anything. It scares more people and makes it schools more unsafe. Not the proper environment for that. Some students would think correctly nor focus with the worry of a deadly weapon in their presence

J. Butler
3/3/2018 12:42:21 pm

I feel as if it wouldn’t be a smart nor safe idea to arm educators. It could prevent a lot of in school danger and worries but nevertheless you never know what someone would be feeling. Unless my teachers are put through a full on police boot camp proving they are trust worthy with a firearm then I don’t want them to have one. This could be seriously danger in its own.

School is a place where students go to learn and prosper. This can only be accomplished if students feel safe. Having people threaten and attempt to shoot up schools is already an issue many children and teens fear, but allowing their teachers to carry firearms won't make them feel any safer. In fact, it will do the polar opposite. A teacher or staff member could easily decide to draw their weapon on someone on campus and harm them. What we need in school's is better security - cameras that are monitored closely, metal detectors, security guards with proper training and credentials and mindful, thoughtful teachers and staff. Putting weapons in the hands of staff members during school hours is misguided and foolish.

If teachers were armed with guns in school, schools would become like prisons. Teachers may start intimidating the kids because of them. Imagine having a teacher that is racist and you being the only black kid in the class, giving that teacher a gun can end in the demise of that child. A way to prevent all the school shootings is to up school security, not by giving teachers guns. There are crazy teacher in the world and who's to say they wont get mad at a student and use there fire arm on them. I do not think they should give teachers guns for the simple fact that teachers can go crazy and shoot up schools also.

Crawford III. W 1st

Schools the so called safest place on Earth would become a prison. The class clown could be on one today and the teacher may not be feeling good he/she could just up they glock and shoot the kid. It just will not be safe everyone will always be on edge or scared. There would be a decrease of learning also because the only thing everyone can focus on is the pistol packing teacher.

Allowing teachers to be armed with guns is not the best solution. Giving more people the rights to weapons solves nothing because we want people to put the guns down, not for more people to pick them up. School is supposed to be a safe environment for students to learn. If someone comes into the school armed it's the security's job to handle. Teachers should continue to focus on protecting students in a less violent way. Children find ways to get into things so if the teacher is out the class for only a moment a child could find their way to the gun and irresponsibly put the life of their peers in danger.

I think that if the teachers are allowed to have guns then it would actually be good, for kids sake. Students want to feel safe at school knowing they are coming to learn something new, not knowing that there is gonna be a school shooting & one of their friends will get shot or killed . Schools would just become shooting ranges if teachers were armed with weapons. It’s ridiculous as to why students have to come to school and fear for their lives, because of discipline. It’s pitiful as to how heartless teachers can be. I wonder how that teacher would feel after he/she realized they have just assassinated someone’s child. I wonder how the teacher would feel if someone were to take their child(s) life over something petty.

I don’t that they should be able to carry guns it still not safe to do. A lot of teacher can go crazy to and start shootings in school because they are up set.gun are not safe at school no matter who bring them. Teachers can have bipolar or any thing else one day they go of meds and and say this student ain’t listening so I am going to shoot them for it . A gun goes off by accident and someone’s child get hurt because of it. Then what students can bring gun for the teachers then everyone will basically be dead.

This topic is very challenging because, i do and don't believe that teachers or administrators should be able to keep guns in the school . It would be good to keep them somewhere safe where students can't reach them or have no access to where they can cause something bad to happen like, them shooting up the school or maybe accidentally harming themselves or a classmate
