Power: Does It Always Win?

1/30/2023

TRIGGER WARNING
Police Brutality and Race-based Violence
Picture
Tyre Nichols was also a father and it appears, a husband. While I do not want you to watch the video of what lead to his untimely demise, I do want you to think about his life, your life, and the lives of those who took Tyre's life. Then, consider this and what it means to you, to society, to authorities: "All mothers were summoned when he called out for his mama."

Consider those answers, respond to the following prompt: To what extent does power or the lack of power affect individuals?
1. INCLUDE: First Initial, Last Name AND Class Block.

2. Respond in no more than five (5) complete sentences and no less than three (3) complete sentences. (This helps you write more concisely and think more critically.)

3. You MUST comment on at least TWO other posts from any student in any class. Your replies cannot be identical comments on different posts and posting shallow comments such as "I agree" or "I disagree" will earn you a zero. Make sure your reply addresses the comment that you are responding to.

4. Set a weekly alarm or calendar timer. Whatever you do to remember other important events, I'd do the same for this assignment.

5. Don't wait until the last minute.
Telling me that you didn't do the assignment on Friday because you broke your leg, for example, on Thursday will not do anything for you when you've had a week. Be responsible and accountable.

CAUTION!! Do NOT embarrass me, yourself, your class, the English department, the school, your family or your upbringing with tasteless, meaningless comments. This is for a grade.

DISCLAIMER: If you do not respond AND comment on TWO others, you will not receive credit for this assignment. If you do not write your name correctly, and I don't see your work, you will not receive credit for this assignment. It's all or nothing.

WARNING: If you post even one second past midnight, your comment might appear to be posted, but as soon as it is opened to be graded, it will automatically delete.

I feel like the police had a better way they could've handled Tyre Nichols. That's why i try not to get involved with anything and stay out the way because cops over use they authority.

I agree, cops often abuse their power.

M. Davis 1a

I agree, they could’ve handled it totally different.

Nox (Katelyn) Sears

I agree with you, because as long as you stay out of their way they don't mess with you. Cops these days love to abuse their power.

K Jacinto 6B
2/3/2023 11:48:26 pm

I agree it’s smarter to try not to get involved with the police in a bad way they use their power as an advantage.

Yes I agree that cops feel like they have more power over us when they bleed the same way we do

C. Torres 1A

I agree you should not be in a situation remotely close to that.

2/3/2023 11:53:22 pm

I agree, we should all follow the law .Not all cops are bad but the ones you run into, the ones going viral you must be prepared for them. Just stay calm and co-operate.

I agree completely with this statement

B Wilkinson 6B
1/30/2023 01:16:49 pm

Having power or the lack of power can have a pretty big impact on some people. Power can be used to control other people and make them do what you want them to do. But when some people run out of power or don't have power at all they feel hopeless and don't know what to do.

C Moore 6b
1/30/2023 02:07:31 pm

i agree with power can have a big impact on people and when they don't have any power they can feel like its the end of the world and don't know what they should do

M. Davis 1a

I agree, having power can have a major impact on people !

R. Aponte 2A link
2/2/2023 12:06:50 pm

Power can either bring people together or separate people and in this society today it is separating us as a whole. People with power are bringing people with no power down. People without power expect people with power to develop our society into something substantial.

J Melgar 6B link

I completely agree with you. people with little power expect the people with more power to help, but instead they worsen the situation.

I agree, this world we live in today is ran by power.

cedric lott 2A

I agree having power can have a very much larger effect on people. Also, people abuse the power their giving. power is just something people dont take serious

E.Adame 2A
2/2/2023 02:11:42 pm

I agree with you about how people view their power. Sometimes it makes them seem like a new person but when it's gone they change and are never the same.

A. Tindle 7b
2/2/2023 05:02:30 pm

I agree with what your getting at. Power is the key thing many want, and when certain people get it, they can use it for bad, and to control people. Then you have those people who really want it, and feel down, and try their hardest all their life to get it.

J Melgar 6B link
2/3/2023 06:10:42 pm

I agree with you. Power can really make or break a person. Give someone a taste of power and they abuse it until someone steps up to say something.

A Giles 2A
2/3/2023 10:19:16 pm

I agree with you. People Nowadays seem to be blinded by anything. Doesnt matter who or what position they are in.

I agree in most cases like these the officers are using the power they are given as an advantage.

Yes I agree because when people feel like they don’t have power they feel less of themselves and some people use power as an advantage

I agree because power can currupt people

F. Maltos 3A
2/3/2023 11:57:56 pm

I agree with you because in this case of Tyre the police thought he had all the power and now he ruined tyre life.

M. Davis 1a
2/1/2023 09:30:56 pm

Hearing about what happened to Tyre Nichols has made me very angry. Power can affect people greatly, these police abused their power and now they are in jail. They think because they have more “power” that they can do whatever even when they know it’s wrong.

M.Banks 6B
2/1/2023 11:53:54 pm

I can agree with this because police do abuse their powers in many different ways like not just physically abusing people. They abuse it in other ways as in selling drugs, doing things under the table or being verbally abusive to other civilians, but feeling like they can get away with it because they are a higher authority so that’s why I feel like there is some limits of power that should be stripped away from a police officer. because police are going to keep abusing their authority, till we as people care enough to make a change.

R. Aponte 2A link
2/2/2023 12:00:45 pm

In today's society power is being taken advantage of and the result is corruption. People that lack power aren't seen and/or acknowledged. People with power just do whatever and whenever because of their abilities.

E. Adame 2A

I agree with you that these police did abuse their power. I feel the situation could've been handled differently and it wouldn't have had to turn out this way

i agree with you that power can affect people mentally and physically. police officers are supposed to protect the community not ATTACK the community.

2/3/2023 12:46:29 am

This cruelty just makes you realize that police cannot be trusted to have any kind of higher power. The cruelty that has been going on for years and it will never be solved. You can strip their power away but how will they learn that they are the monsters of our society.

A.Green 3a
2/3/2023 04:53:50 pm

I agree with you. This whole story makes me inexplicably mad. The violence needs to stop.

Nox (Katelyn) Sears
2/3/2023 10:14:25 pm

Seeing these people take their power this far is disappointing. Just because you are a cop does not give you the right to beat a person to death. To even think about doing that is so wrong

M.Banks 6B
2/1/2023 11:44:50 pm

Tyre Nichols was a very young man and seem to be beginning a new chapter in his life seeing that he was 29 and may be turning 30. it’s hard enough that we have white on black crime but to see black on black crime is very heartbreaking especially when it comes to our young black male police officers, tearing down another young black man. Times are very hard for everyone right now, so I feel like instead of tearing each other down and killing each other. We should be rising up to the occasion and bringing each other up whatever skin color you are and we have to talk about stripping away some of the power that these police officers have white, black, Hispanic, whoever we need to take away some of their power, because they are abusing it to a very, very tall limit.

Jesse Rockwell 7B
2/3/2023 11:59:18 pm

These racist cops be killing people for no reason just because of people's skin color. Cops are taking advantage of people and making people scared to go outside. Tyre shouldn't have been killed and no one to be exact to be killed by the police for no reason all this gotta stop.

R. Aponte 2A link
2/2/2023 11:52:43 am

It affects individuals by giving us structure, a form of formation, and builds our shape as a whole or vice versa . Too much power can lead to corruption and oppression. It can also take a toll on peoples lives and believe they can do whatever they please.

A. Tindle 7b
2/2/2023 05:11:41 pm

I agree with this, too much power can lead to corruption and oppression. Just like how the government needs seperation of powers, just so each branch wouldnt get to powerful, because being too powerful is dangerous.

G.Ojeh B6
2/2/2023 09:17:30 pm

It influences us by providing us with structure, a sort of formation, and develops our overall shape, or vice versa. Corruption and injustice can result from having too much power. People's lives and their belief that they can achieve whatever they want can also be negatively impacted by it.

E. Adame 2A
2/2/2023 02:10:16 pm

I believe power makes people think that they have a bigger authority over others. Whenever I hear about police in the news or online it really isn't ever for a good reason. I wish that our society wasn't always having to worry about the danger of our lives. I don't think this Tyre deserved to have his life taken away from him at only 29.

A Giles 2A
2/3/2023 10:23:33 pm

I agree with this totally because nowadays it seems like everytime that we hear about the police and or government it never seems to be soemthing positive, always negative.

Pina 7B
2/3/2023 11:08:55 pm

I agree with you because they think they are at a higher status than everyone else.

Gabriel Castaneda 2A
2/3/2023 11:44:43 pm

Power does make people think that they are better than us just for the little thing that they have more power than us. When I see the police on the news I usually think that it is something bad. When people see the police we shouldn't be scared for our lives and be scared that we could die because they think that they can do whatever they want.

A. Tindle 7b
2/2/2023 05:00:04 pm

Power is what runs this world. Having power in this life can get you many places others cant reach. Having lack of power is dangerous in this world.Abusing power is very common, and it happens in many situations. Teachers can abusive their power, police officers, even parents. Having power is just so essential, because there are so many positions where power is used, and everyone wants it.

Shamarian Samuels
2/2/2023 05:45:07 pm

I agree with you "power is what runs this world " People often abuse their power because they simply have too much power. Most teachers don't realize how much power they actually have and they ABUSE it.

m.santos 7b
2/3/2023 01:05:54 am

You're completely right about how everyone wants to be in the position of higher power to have them feel like they can control or do what they want. It's scary to know that this society has been created to be that way. I think it's wrong that some of us have to live in fear just by how power is contructed to be benefit others but also constructed to be our downfall.

z foley 2a
2/3/2023 03:45:36 pm

Yessss I agree . Some people take their privileges for advantage , and also overplay their part when they have the position or the power they overlook it and does the most and all the wrong things they do their job the way they want .

Shamarian Samuels
2/2/2023 05:40:43 pm

In the society that we live in everything is based on how much power an individual has.If an individual has too much power they can either use it to make a difference or they can abuse the power. For example the majority of police officers often abuse their power and have corrupt mindsets. They have this mindset that everyone owes them something and people are under them as a result of their mindset people often lose their lives. If someone has little to no power they tend to feel useless and they fight to try and make their voices be heard. For example the BLM movement was a huge example of people who had little to no power trying to make their VOICES BE HEARD.

zayla f 2a
2/3/2023 03:42:39 pm

I agree because everyone could be hungry or wanting something they don’t need or work for , also could be dealing with a respect thing not too many people give but always wants .

A. Green 3a
2/3/2023 04:52:54 pm

I agree with this completely. Many police officers feel that they are above the law, just because they are supposed to enforce it.

R Brown 7B
2/3/2023 10:24:20 pm

You couldn’t have said it any better like you’re so on point with this. It really is a constant push or pull when it comes to power. Unfortunately a couple of individuals a power hungry and it sucks for the rest of us that are just trying to get by. We can’t even do that because these power hungry people use and abuse us.

Pina 7B
2/3/2023 11:10:24 pm

I agree with you because most use their power to do something wrong instead of using to improve many things in this society.

G. Ojeh B6
2/2/2023 09:15:46 pm

I feel that people may be greatly impacted by power, and when people lack power, they may believe that the world is ending and be unsure of what to do.

K. Williams 3A

I agree people are impacted by power , power makes people feel as if they have control.

m.santos 7b
2/3/2023 12:59:07 am

Reading about this young man and everything about who he was makes you realize how we should bring him and other victims of police brutality the justice they deserve. These police officers have become our fear and the monsters in todays society. This come to the power status they hold and what little power we hold for ourselves. If this is an issue that has the police corrupting themselves with power and dealing with this for years and more years why havent we brung stopped this maddnes once and for all?

R Brown 7B
2/3/2023 10:19:35 pm

I definitely agree. Police are here to dissolve the issues in our communities , but instead they keep causing more problems. They keep hurting and killing a lot of innocent people in our world and it does bring a negative impact on all of us.

R. Brown 3A
2/3/2023 11:14:35 pm

I disagree with this statement completely. 1st the police are more of a hero in the hearts of the everyday citizens than a monster. 2nd this country is all about the people so if there was a group with the most power it would be us. If we all decided to revolt the country would fall in minutes, so the only reason the police have more power than you is because you see it that way. 3rd the police isn´t corrupting themselves everyone no matter how noble are selfish and when given the opportunity to better themselves will do so. It might take longer for some to break than others but with time they do. Can you see your self with power and not using it to better you and your friends and family?

Gabriel Castaneda 2A
2/3/2023 11:35:28 pm

We the people have little to no power but the police who have more power then us love to over use it in the wrong ways. Some police have done some good for us but the other half tend to over use their power and kill innocent people for no good.

J Blackmon 2A
2/3/2023 11:59:50 pm

i agree and we need to remember these victims.

G Hernandez 3A
2/3/2023 11:59:54 pm

I agree with your comment. There’s too many injustices happening all at once that we need to get rid of

Morgan Johnson 5B
2/3/2023 11:59:58 pm

I totally agree. These crimes should never be a problem for anyone. These people are just minding their business and are hurt for no reason. It makes me fear for my life and others.

Zayla Foley
2/3/2023 03:40:17 pm

Having too much power , could be a bad thing. It will make others followers in a negative way . One person with too much power could lead to many evil/bad things that goes their way . Having less control/power could be good in a positive way so the obstacles wouldn’t be too bad. Therefore some people are better off with less power.

J Martinez 3a
2/3/2023 11:52:17 pm

I agree because the more power is worse and I agree that having less power can be positive in some ways .

A. Green 3A
2/3/2023 04:51:33 pm

This story is honestly very heart breaking. He was a father and a husband but at the bare minimum, he was a person. The police officers who took his life don't even have the excuse that they were "doing their job" because there was no reason for them to even interact with him in the first place. This expands farther that police brutality as it is also FIVE police officers abusing their power for their own personal gain. It makes me sick to my stomach that some police officers think they can parade around and do whatever they want, like they are above the law.

Desiree Ware 3A
2/3/2023 10:53:18 pm

Yes I agree, this story is very heartbreaking but all because the saw his skin was black everything was ignored. One he was a father, husband, and a person as you mentioned. This is Horrible.

Jesse Rockwell 7B
2/3/2023 11:54:40 pm

No husband, father, or anyone should be killed because of police thinking they better then us. It don't take 5 police to take down one man. They could've handled the situation differently and better.

G Hernandez 3A
2/3/2023 11:56:47 pm

I agree, he was someone who didn’t deserve what happened to him

J Melgar 6B link
2/3/2023 06:18:30 pm

What happened to Tyre Nichols is completely unacceptable. Police can gain the slightest power and think they are allowed to whatever they want as they please. Meanwhile people with little power are expecting others with more power to help and improve society. Instead, people with the lack of power get put down, ignored, and walked all over while the people with the most power abuse their advantage until someone says something about it.

rHudson 5b
2/3/2023 11:58:26 pm

I do somewhat agree, what happened to Tyre is a shame, and we should continue to speak about it. Although we protest and continue to attempt to speak about police brutality , they seem to put us back in place with the simple motion of a trigger. We should try new approach to stop others from meeting Tyre and George's fate to the gun of an officer.

F. Maltos 3A
2/3/2023 11:59:16 pm

I agree with you because how you said that police think they got all the power and think they can do whatever they want.

Nox (Katelyn) Sears
2/3/2023 10:09:00 pm

I've seen this a lot on the news lately since we've been closed due to the ice outside. They just beat this man to death. Abusing their own power. This man was beaten near is moms house calling out for her. Police brutality is a big thing in America. The worst thing is that four black men were beating a fellow young black man. This man was a father and a husband. People of color in America are mainly targeted in this country. Even LGBT people are too. Anyone who is seen as different than the " American" race are people who are targeted and killed for being " different". As me being a part of the LGBT community and having tan skin I have hatred towards me in my family. Along with my twin sister and my father. Me and my sister get our tan skin from our dad. My mom is white and so is the rest of her family and when we go visit them on the 4th Of July. Me, my sister and dad are always the darkest, and sometimes are always talked about or getting weird stares. It got worse when me and my sister came out and started posting about it. We are always told to love each other growing up. It sucks to see hoe people tale their power to their own advantage.

A Giles 2A
2/3/2023 10:17:27 pm

What happen to this man is completely outragous. Police are just doing what they want to do and no one is doing anything about it. We say things but never do. Even if we try to DO something no one has ever tries hard enough to make that change. We just think "oh this is bad" but never think on how "we" should join in and cooperate to help out.

Desiree ware 3A
2/3/2023 10:49:53 pm

Yes I agree, and it's sad because we just sit back and observe because we can't do anything to change it, it's still going to happen and this is sad to me.

J. Hernandez 5B

True, but one day they gone get theirs.

K Romero 2A
2/3/2023 11:59:07 pm

R Brown 7B
2/3/2023 10:17:36 pm

This is one of those stories I try not to think about because as a black female, there is a big possibility something like this could happen to me. The police in this particular situation could’ve definitely handled it better. Now they have ruined this man life since he can longer continue pursing his life literally and they’ve hurt the people close to this young man as well. It’s tough to process this and it’s something that will most likely continue happening in the future, but hopefully doesn’t.

R. Brown 3A
2/3/2023 10:52:52 pm

I can see where you are coming from the world is harder for some more than others. Life as a female is very hard at least that is what my mom and sisters tell me whenever such a topic comes up. This is to be expected since the world is a tough place and you just have to adapt to it.

Joseph Ballard 1a
2/3/2023 11:51:31 pm

We can stop police brutality by promoting community policing, invest In crisis intervention teams.

R. Brown 3A
2/3/2023 10:36:12 pm

I don´t really care about him nor his story. Sure, its sad that he was killed by those who were supposed to protect him, but this doesn´t really affect me. People with power are more likely to abuse it when they're surrounded by those without it. People are selfish and the world might be complex, but its roots are still from a world where everyone was for themselves. I ´ m truly sorry for his children, wife, mother, father, friends, and everyone else he was close too.

Desiree ware 3A
2/3/2023 10:46:18 pm

Having too much power can lead you and others down the wrong road. Me being a black female in this society scares me especially with the power the police enforcement has today. It's even bad to where our own race is going against each other a black-on-black crime. I can only imagine how Tyre family feels, this is sad and our generation needs to do better.

J Martinez
2/3/2023 11:51:11 pm

2/3/2023 11:07:19 pm

When someone has too much power they forget about peoples feelings and only think about their own. If someone has power they should be able to handle it and do good things instead most abuse that power and do wrongful actions. People want power to be in control of everything. Many police officers have abused their power and they think it’s okay and shouldn’t have consequences. When in reality they have no consideration of the people that are being affected.

Joseph Ballard 1a
2/3/2023 11:50:03 pm

I agree police brutality must be stopped it’s the form of an extreme form of police misconduct and is a civil rights violation. Police brutality includes, but is not limited to, asphyxiation, beatings, shootings, "improper takedowns, and unwarranted use of tasers."

Alexia Ruiz 1A
2/3/2023 11:55:49 pm

I 100% agree, you see it happen every single time. They can't believe something bad is happening to them when they're held accountable for taking a life. They think it's the most unfair thing when in reality they are just paying the consequences to their actions. I guess it would be unbelievable to anyone who hasn't ever had to take responsibility for their actions before.

Gabriel Castaneda 2A
2/3/2023 11:22:58 pm

Police and the Government have too much power and they use it against us because they think that they can do whatever they want to us and others in the world. The police that have taken Tyre's life got fired today (February 3, 2023) because they have taken someone's life that didn't deserve to be taken. Reckless driving is a problem but police have no reason to kill someone over it, Tyre was beaten with a baton and sprayed with pepper sprayed multiple times. The society has taken the incident with Tyre and used it to show how the police are using their power to override us.

Police think that they can do anything to us because they think they are the higher power when really they be getting fired for killing people. What happen to him is supper crazy and shouldn’t have to happen . I feel like the more power people have the worse they act because the consequences are less likly to be harsh . But the sad part is him crying to his mom and I know his mom in that situation didn’t know what to do and was just hoping her child was ok .

I agree because some police dont know how to act and do their job right when they have weapons. They think they can over power people just because they have weapons. Him crying for his mom proves how society can be so messed up today.

I agree police over use their power, using your power as an opportunity to do bad things to someone if often a problem. The tyree nichols story made me angry because I feel like police definitely went about it the wrong way. I believe everyone should come together and try to make a change , this has happened on several occasions where power is abused if we don’t try to do anything about it now it will keep happening.

i honestly feel that this is very important for the community these days. i feel sorry for his mom because my mother would hate to lose their son. i honestly feel that in that situation to have any child of yours deceased, is something a mother should never go through, especially by the authorities and the ones who are supposed to protect you.

When people are given an amount of power where they have can out do any person, they will use it as an advantage and use it against others. So whenever there is an individual with less power they will be more afraid of speaking out against others. So I would recommend for people to try not to test any person with authority because they will feel “more powerful” than others.

I agree having to much power is not something that should be taking advantage of. And speaking up should not be limited no matter what amount of power you have.

Power can influence people greatly, the police misuse their power and now they are in jail. They think just because they have more “power” that they can go and do whatever they want even when they know it’s wrong.power just leads people to be more comfortable in their decisions blinding them to what really is the right thing to do.

I don't even know how to put it in words other than power is everything. If you are at the top of the food chain you have all the power and rarely have to worry about minor inconveniences, when you're at the bottom you have to worry about your life. Power or lack of power can literally determine if you get to live or die.

I feel like now days police feel like they have to much power over us. They think they can treat us anyway and we aren’t supposed to do anything about it. This man didn’t deserve any of this and power is so abusive. We need to speak up about this more because it’s not going to change if we don’t. Police bleed the same we do so I don’t know why they act like they can just act any way towards us .

Power means more control and less power means less control.
Regardless tho ,"Reap What You Sow", those cops got something coming now or eternal.

I feel a lot of people in our society abuse there power.Police are getting worse by the day although it may not be all of them, it's too large of a number of them.We are constantly giving the wrong people power. All people in power care about is money and what they can get away with.

Such a heart-breaking story this is. I believe that having too much power leads to people’s downfalls. We’ve heard enough of police brutality and authority abuse over the last years. And, sadly, our voices are too quiet to be heard.

I believe the lack of power to individuals like myself or others not in a authoritive job, really effects our ability to feel safe or even important. Example the police recently abuse and kill us, because we have no power to fight back without someone dying.

The extent of that that people posses effects people when that realize they have it over other people. Especially if it gets into your head and you start to believe you are superior to other people. This doesn’t boad well for anyone in the end and as you can see it can lead to dire consequences.

I feel as if the police have been abusing their power for a long time. In this situation it kind of bothers me that five officers hurt this black man. and then to add on it was black on black crime. We always complain about us being the ones on the other side of the ones being unfairly treated but we turn around and do it to our own people. at the end of the day the police need to be held accountable and not have as much power they have now.

When it comes to power, you must have balance. Too much power can cause you to hurt people and lack of power can do so as well but to a lesser extent. The people who have hurt this man and others like him have or had too much power, but some also had less power.

Now a days police feel that they have more power than us and they can treat us however they want. Police do not know how they affects us as a society or individual. I just think that they could’ve handled the situation better with Tyre and now the police have ruined his life that was ahead of him.

I think that peoples lack or excessive power makes them do unreasonable things. Having too much power leads you to believe that you are above all and don’t have consequences. Having to little power leads you to believe that speaking up is not an option.

I think what the police did to him was way to far and shouldn't have happened to him. I feel like when the authorities are on duty they think they have the power to take somebody's life when they are innocent. This shouldnt be happening and police should have a limit and they shouldnt think the can over power somebody just because they work for the government.

The lack of power can affect the way that society may perceive an individual. Those with limited power tend to have little to no support by those that do have authority. This can lead to unjust discrimination and convictions

if people have a certain amount of power they feel they can do certain things and get away with it just because what they do or how people see them
