On April 24 at an Arlington high school, an 18-year old student was shot and killed by a 17-year old fellow student just before school got out. Earlier that month, on April 12th, a student at another high school in Dallas shot a classmate inside the classroom.

Since school started this year, there have been at least 20 school shootings. Shockingly, at least 14 were on K-12 campuses with at least nine dead
.

How do we stop the violence and make schools safe for students? Some students and teachers have become activists and advocates for stricter gun laws and some teachers have quit the profession.

As of April 2024, about half the states in this country allow teachers or other school employees to carry concealed guns onto school property and inside the classroom. Also in April, the state of Tennessee joins 33 other states, becoming the 34th state to allow teachers to carry guns in schools.

Respond to the following: Explain whether teachers should be allowed to carry guns in schools and why.

NOTES:

**Vague responses will not be accepted in your post or replies.
**Disrespectful comments will not be accepted and will result in a zero whether you do the assignment or not.

1. INCLUDE: Last Name, First Initial, AND Class Block.

2.
You MUST comment on at least TWO other posts from any student in any class. Your replies cannot be identical comments on different posts and posting shallow comments such as "I agree" or "I disagree" will earn you a zero. Make sure your reply addresses the comment that you are responding to.

3. Language. Do NOT use profanity.

4. Set a weekly alarm or calendar timer. Whatever you do to remember other important events, I'd do the same for this assignment.

5. Don't wait until the last minute.
Telling me that you didn't do the assignment on Friday because you broke your leg, for example, on Thursday will not do anything for you when you've had a week. Be responsible and accountable.

6. How to post. Click in the top right hand corner or the lower left hand corner where it says Comments to access the discussion board. Once there, scroll to the bottom of the page to post a Reply. After, choose comments from at least two students from any class and Reply to what they wrote.

I don't think teachers should carry guns into school, because their guns could go off unexpectedly and it could injure somebody by accident.

Tyren D 4A
5/7/2024 11:41:43 am

I agree because some of the teachers are stubborn and think they know everything and probably didn't even look up how to use the gun and safety rules and could easily get someone hurt.

Smith N 3a
5/7/2024 01:55:16 pm

I disagree because if they allow teachers to carry guns then they'll be required to take a fire arm safety class and guns come with a safety feature

C Da Silva 1A
5/8/2024 08:39:46 am

I agree, you never know what might happen with a weapon and, there are also other risks that are not worth the trouble. I think instead something like metal detectors could be implemented, that way it's less likely for a weapon to be brought in the building.

N Rainey 1a
5/8/2024 08:40:47 am

I agree guns in school don't make it safe because anything can happen that can cause a gun to go off

B Penson 7B
5/9/2024 01:47:13 pm

I agree that someone can accidentally let t go off and hurt someone

M, Gibb 1A
5/8/2024 08:43:21 am

I agree your points are valid also someone could steal the gun.

G devin
5/8/2024 08:44:09 am

I agree what if smeone was to try and still the teacher gun or the teacher gun like you said could shoot someone and injure them or could just kill them

Shankle, A 1A
5/8/2024 08:45:57 am

I know that teachers will be more comfortable and safe just in case they have a weapon that they know how to use but i disagreed on your response.

starr k. 1a
5/8/2024 08:49:04 am

I agree because you never know what can happen but at the same time if they arfe licenced to carry it and it's there to protect the students

B Jasso 3A
5/10/2024 12:24:19 pm

I agree with you, with the proper safety training and classes. Teachers should be able to carry a gun, it would also make the teachers less paranoid about something happening inside of the classroom.

Amalio Garcia 1A
5/8/2024 08:51:04 am

I disagree, if the teacher are licensed and know their guns well ,there would be no reason for the gun to "unexpectedly" shoot somebody.

Spencer.S. 1A
5/8/2024 08:53:40 am

I agree, I think teachers being able to carry guns will just raise the charts of school shooting

K Jacinto 3A
5/10/2024 09:36:10 pm

I respectfully disagree, because they will have to take a course over how to handle the gun with safety. So things like that wouldn’t happen.

Martinez A 7B
5/10/2024 09:44:00 pm

I agree, they can’t prevent accidents from happening with their weapon.

C Cofield 3a
5/10/2024 11:33:28 pm

I could mostly agree with you on this statement. Mainly because some teacher may get angry and do the unthinkable.

Tyren D 4A
5/7/2024 11:38:43 am

I feel like they shouldn't because even though some of these teachers seem to have clean backgrounds dosnt mean they don't have emotions and they will click anytime.

Smith N 3a
5/7/2024 01:58:24 pm

I do agree that some peoples emotions can get the better of them but I dont think it will ever get to that point to where that can become a possibility

C Da Silva 1A
5/8/2024 08:41:10 am

I agree, you don't know how a teacher might react in certain situations. There is also other things that could be done to avoid guns being brought in the building, like implementing metal detectors.

N rainey 1a
5/8/2024 08:41:40 am

I agree because all teachers don't have hearts some teachers don't like certain kids so that might prompt them to act a certain way when upset

A Hutton 1A
5/8/2024 08:42:52 am

yea i agree emotions could play a role in someone getting injured, but also another point id like to bring up is why even bring a gun in the classroom to begin with cause thats just asking for a problem

Shankle, A 1A
5/8/2024 08:43:20 am

I disagreed I believe that teachers should have a gun when they are very trust worthy and know how to use a gun for a major emergency cause and have a clean background .

D.mims 1a
5/8/2024 08:43:25 am

i agree, peoples emotion change all the time and that could be bad or good.

G devin
5/8/2024 08:47:32 am

i agree like the student in that class that was giving a teacher a hard time the teacher could snap and just do something they should not do and like if the student was to be more upset thne the teacher the student could try and still the gun and try and shoot or while they fitting to make sure the kid dont get it the kid could get sht and bam dead or injurd

T.Gray 1A
5/8/2024 08:49:49 am

I agree because people even if you have a clean background that don't mean that they will do something stupid.

Amalio Garcia 1A
5/8/2024 08:50:00 am

I agree, I seen on many occasions were a teacher couldn't hold it anymore and did some crazy stuff due to anger he riled up over their years of teaching.

starr k. 1A
5/8/2024 08:51:12 am

I agree because everyone had a clean background at some point then they snapped. Everyone starts clean til something makes them act out

Spencer.S. 1A
5/8/2024 09:01:22 am

I agree, we never know what someone is going through or their intentions

B Jasso 3A
5/10/2024 12:26:28 pm

I do agree that some teachers can have a type of mental challenge and they shouldn't be allowed to carry, but for the teachers that fear for the safety of themselves and their students should. With the proper training they can learn gun safety, and they won't have to deal with being helpless when there's a threat at the school.

Smith N 3a
5/7/2024 01:56:51 pm

I think teacher should be able to carry at school because I feel like that would be safer than the run, fight, or hide method in some cases

A Hutton 1A
5/8/2024 08:40:50 am

nah bro fuck that just run up on that mf kick him in the balls he might shoot you but shit one of us gotta go down for it someones gonna be a hero and they migth even give u a statue outside the school

M, Gibb 1A
5/8/2024 08:46:08 am

I disagree because what if the teacher is the one to shoot up the school that makes it easy to do so. also it makes it easy to steal to gun too.

J. Kamtala 4A
5/8/2024 08:48:02 am

I agree that in a case of emergency a gun would come in handy. I also don't think teachers should walk around school, where there are children, carrying guns. Maybe the gun should be stored somewhere safe or just get rid of the guns all together.

Daniel Alejandro Rendon
5/8/2024 08:52:04 am

I disagree, most teachers are good students, but they could use these guns as tools of intimidations or even threats

C Valdez 1A
5/8/2024 08:58:13 am

I agree I think teachers should be allowed to bring guns to school. Teachers bringing guns to school would make school because it would make violence less likely in school. I think they should only be allowed in safes or in really secure places so it can't be stolen.

R Rinehart 6B
5/9/2024 03:39:29 pm

I think this is true, we need to figure out something.

K Jacinto 3A
5/10/2024 09:37:30 pm

I agree, a teacher with a concealed weapon could use it as protection in a instance of a school shooting.

Martinez A 7B
5/10/2024 09:45:31 pm

I disagree, what if something triggers the teacher and they resort to using it for themselves or worse a student gets ahold of their weapon.

C Cofield 3A
5/10/2024 11:35:27 pm

I can whole heartedly agree to this point because I feel like there would still be at least some who try to find a was around it somehow.

Hernandez A. 4A
5/13/2024 07:17:18 am

This student's response is wrong because who knows what the teacher with a gun could do if the teacher keeps getting annoyed by the kids in the classroom then that teacher will start a school shooting.

C Da Silva 1A
5/8/2024 08:38:18 am

I don't think teachers should be able to carry weapons in the class. One teacher might not be able to control his/her emotions and it could lead to somebody getting hurt because of it. There is also the chance of someone stealing the weapon from a teacher and causing even bigger problems.

J. Kamtala 4A
5/8/2024 08:45:10 am

I agree that someone could steal the weapon, anything can happen and people can lose control of their feelings. Although, I doubt that the teacher would pull out a gun on someone.

Williams J 1A
5/8/2024 08:47:15 am

I agree because people love stealing and nobody needs to get hurt for no reason.

A Giles 1A
5/8/2024 08:47:37 am

Exactly just because teachers are grown adults does not mean that they can control their own emotions. Even if they can control their emotions a student could find it.

L.Speed
5/8/2024 08:52:25 am

I agree for them to have a gun is school is crazy I know it's probably for their safety

Johnson M 1A 2
5/8/2024 08:52:30 am

Especially with how some teachers have outburst due to stress. Students don't know when or how to stop when it comes to making their teachers upset with them. These adults already have enough to deal with at home and in school.

starr k 1a
5/8/2024 08:53:50 am

I agree, just because they are a teacher and they teach students doesn't mean that at on point they can snap and act out

C Valdez 1A
5/8/2024 09:01:05 am

I agree I think if teachers were allowed to carry weapons in class they should be kept in safes. More guns in school would cause more problems because some teachers would probably forget or lose it. I don't think all teachers should be allowed to bring gun because not every teacher would be responsible with one.

Z.woods 6b
5/10/2024 03:43:08 pm

I agree, teachers shouldn't be able to carry weapons. It's more negative effects than positive.

J. Kamtala 4A
5/8/2024 08:38:38 am

I think they shouldn't give teachers guns because most teachers don't have the proper training and could lose control. Also, children shouldn't be in the presence of guns, especially in a place that is supposed to be safe for them.

Williams J 1A
5/8/2024 08:46:12 am

I agree some teacher probably don't know the proper way of holding and using a gun.

L.Speed 1A
5/8/2024 08:49:51 am

I agree teachers shouldn't have a gun in the class room around a lot of kids that are probably going through things.

A Giles 1A
5/8/2024 08:50:09 am

In Texas it is so easy to get a gun even without the proper training that you need for it. For me I say they in order to have a gun you need to have training first because then it shows you about guns.

A Hutton 1A
5/8/2024 08:39:05 am

nah cause if i piss a teacher off which my dumb ass probably will and she´ll blow my ass away and make me look like swiss cheese. so nah teachers shouldnt have guns in the class cause i dont trust any of my teachers not to shoot me.

N rainey 1a
5/8/2024 08:39:57 am

I dont think they should allow teachers to have the because they are humans with emotions too and if they feel threaten they might use it out of context

T.Gray 1A
5/8/2024 08:47:38 am

I agree because people nowadays are trigger happy and want to just shoot a gun

David M 1A
5/8/2024 08:47:52 am

I agree because some teacher's might be having a bad day in they probably will take it out on the students

G devin
5/8/2024 08:40:21 am

I dont think it would be a good idea for them to let teachers be armed with gun because one they can go off unexpectly and two somene could try and still th teachers gun like a student and if the teacher got in to it they ened up letting there anger get to them might try and shoot the kid or anyone so no they should not give them a gun

Daniel Alejandro Rendon
5/8/2024 08:50:48 am

This is an agreeable statement, we do not know what type of people are when they are enraged/ mentally unstable with a weapon

Johnson M 1A 2
5/8/2024 08:57:36 am

Even though it would be required for the gun to be on safety, Not all people do it. Stealing could also be a problem especially when it comes to children. Not all kids know how to keep their hands off of things. They see something they want to touch and will do anything to get to it.

Shankle, A 1A
5/8/2024 08:40:26 am

I believed that a teach who knows what they are caring a gun to school so they can be more protected and be more prepared. It will be a major change to have a teacher carrying a gun to school just for using it for other outsiders or a child that will hurt a lot of people.

D.Mims 1a
5/8/2024 08:41:20 am

I think nobody should carry a gun in a schools if its not a police. Theres have been some bad cases that the teacher hurt the student, and the other way around.

David M 1A
5/8/2024 08:45:59 am

I agree because it's to risky to have teacher's with guns on school campus

Z.woods 6B
5/10/2024 03:44:13 pm

I agree, school should be a safe place with no weapons.

M, Gibb 1A
5/8/2024 08:41:49 am

I believe that that makes it even more high risk of a school getting shot up. First off teachers can also go crazy at any moment or a student can steak the gun. so no I don't think it is safe for teachers to carry guns at school. Mostly all of these shootings are all from emotion .

D.Mims 1a
5/8/2024 08:47:07 am

I agree, it start from emotions and teachers and students both have it.

Lee, J 1A
5/8/2024 08:49:09 am

I agree, emotions can be unpredictable and adding guns to the mix might raise the risks. Plus, the worry about guns getting into the wrong hands is real. Safety's gotta be the top priority, no doubt.

Albiar X
5/8/2024 08:51:22 am

i agree guns shouldnt be in school in general i feel like it would just make the school feel less safe

David M 1A
5/8/2024 08:44:32 am

Teacher's should not be able to to carry gun's in school's because teachers can easily lose there mind at school

Williams J 1A
5/8/2024 08:44:57 am

I would say it depends on what environment they live in for safety reasons. You could say no because you can make a teacher mad to a point they would pull the gun out on students.

J lee 1A
5/8/2024 08:45:11 am

I believe that teachers shouldn’t carry guns because it may create a more tense and intimidating environment for students, potentially hindering the learning process.

d Gomez 1a
5/8/2024 08:52:14 am

I agree with this sentiment. if I knew my teacher had a gun on their person, I would be very anxious around them and likely be too afraid to talk to them. it would definitely affect my learning in their class.

A Giles 1A
5/8/2024 08:45:35 am

Guns shouldn't be on school grounds at all. If you were to make a student mad enough to shoot up a school who knows how long teachers can because of how disrespectful students are these days. Even if you brought one to "show" off the situation can still turn around.

Albiar X
5/8/2024 08:50:16 am

i agree guns shouldnt be at school at all especially with how students are nowadays one could eaily test a teachers patience and things could go downhill from there

d Gomez 1a
5/8/2024 08:54:07 am

this is true. teachers are humans with emotions and problems too. a student could 100% push a teacher past their limit, and if that teacher happened to be armed, the outcome could be drastically worse than if they weren't.

Q Sanders 3A
5/8/2024 12:18:08 pm

L.Speed 1A
5/8/2024 08:46:01 am

Even tho we hate cops and clear backpacks they are needed around the schools for safety.

James L . 4A

i agree more cops need to be at schools to insure our saftey in schools .

T.Gray 1A
5/8/2024 08:46:40 am

I don't think they should carry guns because what if they place it down and a student wants to play with it and shoots themselves or somebody.

Amalio Garcia 1A
5/8/2024 08:47:33 am

I believe if a teacher is licensed and knows the rules and safety of a fire arm and goes through some training, they could have fire arms but for safety reasons only no other because anything could go wrong. EX: student could lunge at the teacher unexpectedly and take the gun and things go wrong.

George A 4A
5/8/2024 07:37:17 pm

I agree with the training aspect I feel teachers should go through a minimum of time before even thinking about carrying on a school campus.

Johnson M 1A 2
5/8/2024 08:47:39 am

If we give teachers the rights to bear arms on school campuses, this would most likely worsen the gun violence epidemic. There should be more security put in place to search those suspected and more searches on those who do own guns.

J. Lira 1A
5/8/2024 08:48:22 am

The gun crisis in America is a joke that foreign countries use to ridicule us. Rather than attempting to fight fire with fire we should address the real issue by setting background checks and check the sanity of current gun owners. Although, it is a scary concept, I believe that teachers should not be allowed with firearms within campus since it won't really make a change.

R Rinehart 6B
5/9/2024 02:43:41 pm

This is absolutely how it should be handled, guns are not the problem in this situation it is the process to buy them and the fact that pretty much anyone can get one.

Albiar X
5/8/2024 08:48:25 am

i dont think teachers should be allowed to carry guns to school because you just never know what type of person is carrying the gun one could easily get mad and use it as a threat or even worse

E Martinez 1A
5/8/2024 08:49:15 am

I don't think teachers should be allowed to have guns because anything could happen the gun could go off or a student could find it. I think schools should have metal detectors and more security or officers and check all bag good.

d gomez 1a
5/8/2024 08:49:16 am

I believe the concept of arming teachers in the classroom could go well, but there are many risks that come with it. in the event of a shooting, what if the teacher gets cold feet and just puts themselves in the way making them an easier target. or even just in a regular school day, they could forget the safety and accidentally fire the gun in the classroom. the safety risks of giving a teacher a gun would make a regular school day 10x more dangerous.

Sergio Morales link
5/8/2024 01:25:17 pm

Sergio Morales-3A-
I agree, this would mean that teachers would have to be properly trained in some way, so they are able to take down the threat. But even then, I still think that this just makes things more dangerous, as they can get in the way, as you said.

Daniel Alejandro Rendon
5/8/2024 08:49:19 am

I do not believe that teachers should carry guns to school, while most teachers would never think to harm students their could be moments where a teacher could be at their or limits or enraged who knows what that could lead too

Spencer .S. 1A
5/8/2024 08:49:40 am

I don’t think teachers should be able to carry guns at school…I feel like kids will be able to get ahold of it and accidentally shoot someone or themselves … a teacher that’s mentally not there or thats going through something can just get their gun and shoot someone or themselves ,you never know people intentions or what could happen so I just wouldn’t trust it.

C. Deane,

I think they they shouldbn't carry a gun. The reason behind that is that you never know if that teach has a short temper and they can just snap or one of the students can take it.

C.Deane 6B
5/8/2024 09:54:56 am

I agree some teachers have short tempers you never know what they are capable of, and especially giving them a gun.

I agree because you never know what's going on in their lives and they could snap at any time

J Deleon 6B
5/9/2024 11:07:25 am

I agree because there are so many teachers who became teachers for a reason, all it takes is a student to over power a teacher and now they have a gun, is the teacher supposed to shoot the student? Many questions but it can be prevented if we do not give teachers guns.

Kinlaw E 3A
5/10/2024 08:54:46 am

I can agree that we don't know if teachers have a short temper, but I think that they should make sure that the teachers are able to know how to act in a situation and not hire anyone who would snap.

C. Deane 6B
5/8/2024 09:53:53 am

I don’t know if that would be a good idea because of the outcomes that could come with that, teachers are humans too, they’re not just some perfect people who always follow the rules so honestly more likely to not allow that.

James L . 4A
5/8/2024 03:58:34 pm

Exaxlty teachers could loose it any time or any day and just over use their power and that bring more situations on top on top of situations

Its not a good idea. I don't think people realize that teachers have feelings and emotions that can affect their mentality. Its not a good idea at all to put those same people with guns.

Sergio Morales link
5/8/2024 01:19:49 pm

Sergio Morales-3A-
There is absolutely no way, that this is a good idea. The only reason that students obtain guns are from sketchy marketing and from their guardians. And even then, that just means that there should be safer precautions for when you buy a gun, or safer security in blocking out the dark web. Giving the teachers guns will unlock a whole other problem. Whether it be if the teachers mind is sane and they themselves will not commit a crime. OR, if the students can possibly get the gun from the teacher. There's just so many possibilities.

A Bradley 6B
5/8/2024 07:49:40 pm

I agree because this just opens up an easier and close option for a student to get their hands on a gun. All it takes is one day for one single teacher to mess up and it ends up a disaster.

I feel teachers should not be allowed to carry on school property. While it seems like a good idea on paper, this seems like in real life it would be a disaster. What if a teacher does not secure their gun properly? How many teachers would be on campus with a gun. Leaving the guns to police officers on campus seems like the smarter choice. What would help is every school having the correct funding in order for them to take the necessary precautions to stop people from getting on campus with weapons.

I agree that this should be left for police officers who are trained and better equipped to handle those type of situations.

I agree instead of focusing on funding classes for teachers to learn firearm safety simply fund for more officers, we can prevent a lot of worry not to mention the parents that would rage

A Bradley 6B
5/8/2024 07:46:25 pm

I don't think this is the way to solve the problem because this just brings more possible problems. Teachers now have access to a weapon that might not be able to be trusted with or even a kid might get their hands on their weapon. Some people might even try to apply to become a teacher just to have a weapon.

With students knowing teachers have guns to school. One they think " well a teacher can, so I can." two, A student can take said gun from teacher.

I agre, kids are willing to do whatevr to save there own self. So, teachers having possession of a weapon would just make kids in the classroom think to go grab it or they are automatically allowed to use it. I also feel like teachers shoudlnt have it because they could forget they even brought it one day and someone gets ahold of it which could put alot of people at risk.

Nox (Katelyn) Sears 8b

I do not think it is the best idea to let teachers bring a controlled gun on campus. This could lead to a lot of other problems and just isn't safe in my eyes. Would it look good at first. Yes, absolutely, but if a teacher is in a situation where it has to be used, but the gun is taken by a student or an adult. There's just a lot of things that could go wrong. I care about my and other people safety but I don't think it's a good idea.

I agree. Its not even about the teachers but about the students. Many of these kids can overpower some of the teachers and take the gun away. Plus we don't usually know how these teachers feeling they mask their feeling so well we don't know when they're happy or sad.

Contreras M 6b

There are some teachers that are small, others are much older, and some just might not care. Having guns in school is not the solution to the dangers happening. Which is why I agree with this comment since I didn’t even think about that situation but is completely true.

J Deleon 6B

I don't believe that teachers should carry guns, I see how its helpful but letting anybody have a gun with children al around couldn't be a good idea. I think all it takes is one impersonator and that teachers is given the gun in a school full of kids.

T Samuels 6b

I think that teachers shouldn’t carry a gun because the presence of guns in schools could increase the risk of accidental discharges or unintended harm. Students may potentially gain access to the weapons.

I agree, it is not uncommon for students to sneak behind a teacher's desk and rummage through their items. Even if it is a small number of teachers who are able to possess a firearm, we do not know the character of the students in the class. It is not a good idea to leave a gun in the presence of teenagers.

Although the idea of always being protected with a teacher having a gun may sound ideal. What if someone inside the school takes it and starts something?

R Rinehart 6B
5/9/2024 02:39:46 pm

It depends on the person holding the gun as I feel that both sides can be applied. There should be more strict laws on guns in order to get a clear read on what kind of person is in possession of the firearm, how they are mentally, and if they are likely to hurt others. I also think that a teacher owning a firearm is acceptable if they are found to be responsible enough to own it not only in general, but a classroom setting, no incidents of kids getting the gun should even be a possiblility in the possession of whoever is allowed to carry one.

A teacher should not be allowed to carry guns due to the emotional anxiety an adolescent can have on one’s mind. The stressors of taking care of hundreds of kids each day can lead to symptoms close to depression leading to more mass murders of uncontrollable emotions. Because most teachers are women, it is proven that women are more emotionally unstable than men making them unstable to their environments, especially with weapons involved. Not only are they not capable of having weapons near children they would not know what to do if a child finds and gets ahold of the guns. Due to the new age of generations, no matter how safe they think the gun is away from the children, they will manage to outsmart the ones who are teaching them to use their smartest abilities.

C.lott 3A
5/10/2024 11:49:57 am

I agree, their is alot that goes on in people mind that you cant control in moments like this. Alot of people have things they are going through and they feel the only way to get rid of the pain or stress is to harm other lives. Furthermore, students wouldnt have an such easy access to things like that.

E.Maso 3a
5/10/2024 10:24:24 am

This is an interesting question in which i say No, Teachers should have the right to bear arms in school but, instead focus on installing better security systems throughout the building. Encouraging the rule that guns are allowed is not what the solution should be because some students may think this is unfair. Security systems such as metal detectors or rules such as clear backpacks have the potential to eliminate the problem at hand and, make schools a safe environment for students to learn.

C.lott 3A
5/10/2024 11:24:07 am

Violence in schools is a serious issue that affects students, teachers, and the entire school community. There are several ways that violence can be prevented in schools. One way is by promoting positive behavior and creating a culture of respect and kindness.

C.lott 3A
5/10/2024 11:46:25 am

I think they shouldnt because that would just cause more problems. For instance, the police doesnt come in time there could be multiple lives taken due to the fact theirs more than one teacher in the building with a fire arm which means they could make the situation worse than it already is. Also, with the being armed and the shooter/person knows then that would make that person already trigger ready/happy to kill anyone.

Alynette Delgado 6B
5/10/2024 01:08:32 pm

That’s another thing that people don’t realize, having one person with a gun is dangerous but all teachers at a school. That can cause more danger since there’s more guns. Knowing at any moment they can hurt someone if they wanted to.

B Jasso 3A
5/10/2024 12:28:42 pm

I feel like this is a good but also bad idea. With the proper training and "experience" teachers should be able to keep a concealed weapon in their classroom inside of a locked drawer or something secure, but it's also a bad idea because the gun could go off if not put up correctly. so there are advantages or disadvantages.

Gooch K. 4A
5/10/2024 06:13:43 pm

I agree because accidents happen and kids are ignorant. Some might go snooping through teachers things when knowing it's there or knowing it's a law passed thinking they could have one.

Alynette Delgado 6B
5/10/2024 12:53:03 pm

This is a really interesting question because I have no idea if to choose yes or no. I'd say yes teachers should have guns in the class to protect the children if something does happen. however they would need training so they can know how to use it correctly. But I also think that teachers should not have guns in their classroom since that is basically bringing the problem inside and being unsure when a shooting could happen. They should just install better security and better techniques to keep kids safe.

Xy'lon Jordan 4A

I don't think teachers should be able to carry guns inside of schools because it's unnecessary. What would teachers be able to do even if a student was pointing a gun at another student?! shoot the student!? I don't feel like that's the teacher's place. I think the aps and authorities(head of the school) should make sure the school is safe for all. At the same time, teachers should probably be armed for emergency moments, such as lock downs or someone unusual on campus.

Im worried that introducing firearms into schools could create an atmosphere of fear and mistrust, detracting from the learning environment. I also have concerns about the potential for accidents or misuses.

M Fairley 6B
5/10/2024 07:08:54 pm

I agree, school can already be an intimidating place due to bullying and fights. Introducing guns into educational spaces can increase the anxiety many students already feel while at school. If schools truly wish for students to feel safer then they should work to make it harder for guns to get into the school not easier.

Diaz Z 1A

I totally agree , work harder to not get those things in the schoool .

M Fairley 6B
5/10/2024 07:02:39 pm

I do not believe teachers should be able to carry firearms in educational spaces. Even if the firearm is in the hands of the teacher there is still a possibility that the it could fall into the hands off the student. Another concern is what if the teacher tries to harm a student. This would make the initial problem of students and staff being harmed on school grounds far worse. Attempting to fix a gun problem with more guns is a moronic decision .If we really wish to solve the issue of firearms on school ground we must place pressure on our government officials and force them to crack down on gun laws.

Brown R. 8B
5/10/2024 10:43:33 pm

I like what you said about what if teachers harm kids! Teachers are just as human as the student and can act out as well and even though they’re supposed to stay professional some don’t. What if there is an altercation between a teacher and student and that teacher shoots their gun. That’s not good!!

D . Hurth
5/10/2024 08:31:18 pm

Uh shit no , it’s teachers with the same amount of mental problems as some of these students. That’s what sro’s are for , some teachers have a short rope and may crash out.

C, Ramirez 3A
5/10/2024 08:40:15 pm

To stop violence in schools and keep students safe, I think the rules and regulations behind who can obtain a gun should be amended. Having stricter policies behind gun ownership will allow for guns to be less easily accessible by people who have mental illnesses or are mentally unstable to own a gun. As of now, it doesn't take much for someone to go to a gun shop and purchase a gun, so having a crackdown on shops that are allowing for easy access of them, doing a more through background check and having people go through a psychological evaluation by reputable licensed professionals can aid in making schools and our world a safer place. Most people believe that getting rid of guns will be the safest option, but even in countries where owning a gun as a civilian is illegal, there are still large underground markets for guns. Instead, being able to regulate and access who are the people owning these guns can allow us to keep track of the people and the guns being used. The amount and types of guns being owned should also be looked into since no one person needs 100 plus guns or guns known for mass murder. Their should be a license and different evaluation for people who can access those guns in particular.

K Jacinto 3A
5/10/2024 09:40:56 pm

I think teachers should be allowed. Obviously this should come with serious training and safety protocols. They can protect themselves while police rushes over to the school. This could minimize students panic and potentially any harmless students from being harmed by a threat.

Martinez A 7B
5/10/2024 09:47:59 pm

Although a teacher carrying a weapon on campus can have both its ups and downs, I believe that they shouldn’t allow teachers to have a gun with them at school. It is easy to access if they blow a fuse and react by using the gun, or if a student knows the teacher is carrying they can get ahold of it and use it for themselves.

D Lopez 3a
5/10/2024 10:50:44 pm

No matter how bad these school shooting situation get, under no circumstances should teachers carry weapons/guns in school. If anything it would make school shootings more likely to occur. What if a a teacher acted impulsively after getting mad at a kid and just shot them. There are just so many negatives to that “ solution.”

Teachers shouldn’t be able to have guns on campus because who knows what will happen once that gun is shown in front of the students. Who knows what might go down once a teacher gets mad or if they can even defend themselves. Especially if a student knows they have one and they will try and use it for the fun of it. So I say no because we already have officers on campus with guns so teachers shouldn’t be allowed to have guns.

C Cofield 3A
5/10/2024 11:37:46 pm

I feel like the teachers should be able to carry only is they have went under certain health and background checks. Reason being for the health check would be to actually be able to know where that person stands mentally.

I don’t think teacher should be allowed to carry in school grounds , some teachers do have tempers and someone could get hurt or what if they misplaced it and someone with bad intentions get it . That’s just a bad ending , now I do tho k there should probably be medal detractors or random bag checks

M Roberson 8B

I do not think teachers should carry guns. In my opinion i feel like teachers shouldn't have weapons on campus. It would just make it more unsafe because they wouldn't be able to monitor it correctly.
