Growth Happens in the Valleys

12/9/2014

Picture

"All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work." ~Calvin Coolidge

Many teens today believe that once they graduate high school, they don't need to attend college because college is not for them. They believe that they're going to make a lot of money either in sports, music, hustling or "busting bricks" and that life won't be too hard as long as they have a plan. Defend or challenge whether this notion is true.

Hustling started a long time ago , where individuals had a mindset that dealing drugs , killing , and stealing was the only way to make it in life. Now and days , it requires a level of education ( most times college.) Without college , I believe that they ( non-college individuals ) are risk takers and expect to survive off of talent. With talent , it brings work ethic (" how good do you want to be?") Without work ethics and education, what is your worth ? Therefore, I agree with this statement .

Katera Greer

I agree that within this lifestyle most likely a job requires some kind of levels of education most time college. Its hard to get a job with no degree not saying that college is a choice but I feel that it should lead upon an opinion to take on and think about.

I agree with katera because you do have to have some type of education to get a good job

Dominique Fobbs

I agree with Katera, because with most jobs you need some type of education. Hustling and being on the block will not get you very far in life. So I believe that college is needed unless you have a plan. Your had to be legit and will better you in life.

Dontizierra Booker

I agree with Katera. In order to be successful in life you must further your education beyond a high school level.

Tyler Wright

I agree with Eboni because nobody can just live off of pure talent you have to have more education and a greater skill level to make it in this world. Big corporations want education, greater skill levels, and great work ethics and you either learn those task in college or not.

Katera Greer
12/11/2014 12:33:02 am

Not saying that college is for everyone but its always best to at least try. College could be a wonderful experience for you but you will never know because you claim you was so ready to be out of high school. Many feel that if they don't attend college; sports, music, hustling or "busting bricks" could satisfy there giving needs they gone want in life and that's not true. Education is key and important to have because what if those plan don't work than what you cant get a job because you don't have any college experience or any college degree.

Eboni Davis

I agree with Katera because a back up plan is always need in any given situation.

I agree, majority of jobs nowadays require you to have at least a bachelors degree so young people can't be surprised if there is no one that will hire them. As a generation we don't think about our future,we focus on the present. In the further some will regret not going to college when they are struggling to pay bills.

Dominique Fobbs 2nd period
12/12/2014 01:06:31 am

Taylor is totally right with the jobs because most jobs do require a degree. Most big jobs require you to have an education. That is why she is correct in her response.

Angelica Silas link
12/11/2014 12:37:38 am

I agree with Eboni.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with going for your dreams suck as sports and music. But going to college and getting a stable job is way more realistic. All money isn't good money. There are a lot of risks that comes with selling drugs. The main risk is getting yourself caught up and ending up in jail all because you chose the "easy way out". Going to college and workinh to earn a living is always better than making a quick buck.

Joe Dabney
12/11/2014 01:45:26 am

I believe that for some students, not going to college may be the right choice for them if they are lucky enough to have a legit way of making as much or more money you would going to college and getting a career but that is VERY rare. If you really think that you are going to make a good living from "Hustling" then you might want to rethink your decision before it's to late, if you ask around you would even know that there is always a bad ending to having a "Hustling" career if that's what you want to call it. So before you shut out all other options and become a "Hustler" or "Drug Dealer", think about what your future will be like if you decide to pursue that path.

Daniel kirk
12/11/2014 09:30:52 am

I agree with Joe because if you think hustling is going to help u live your life the. Having a education. then you crazy kuz at the end something bad is going to happen in that hustle.

Jamarie Williams p5
12/11/2014 02:28:04 am

I feel as tho. The people who don't go to college straight out of high, feel like that they can make more money selling dope. Don't gett me wrong selling dope make good money.but not all money good money. And some people don't go because they can't afford it, so dope is all they kno. But dope only get you 2 places dead or in jail so. So kids choose your future wisely

Daniel kirk

Imagine a world without schools and colleges! Impossible, right? No matter how much we hate waking up early for school or studying all night for those tests and exams, Later on in life thats gonna help us. we all know that education is very important. Now, I am not saying that an uneducated man has no chance of being successful or an educated man will surely do well in life. Exceptions are always there. 90% of us will agree that an educated person gets better opportunities in life then a person without one.

antonio moore
12/11/2014 05:41:18 am

this notion is true because u dont necessarily have to go to college to become successful, rich, or wealthy, because there are many people who have not been to college and are successful and are doing great

Domenic Brown
12/11/2014 07:26:08 am

This statement is true because young people believe that they do not need an education after high school or they believe that sports is can get them through life. What they fell to understand is that sports can only get you so far. And that need a higher education to make it in life beside a high school diploma

Bazille Banks
12/11/2014 12:45:24 pm

Playing sports is a very risky career. Sure athletes do make a lot of money, but if you sustain an injury then your career is practically over. If you were playing sports while working on a college degree, then that's fine because you have a second option. However if you don't you won't have the luxuries you once had as an athlete. So I agree with Domenic.

carvellion horn 4th

I agree with Domenic brown because sports can only get you so far. That's why you have to have some type of back up plan or another option to get you through life.

Bazille Banks
12/11/2014 12:40:25 pm

Going to college and getting a degree is a much more effective and efficient way to generate income than hustling. It is proven that people who go to college make more money than people who didn't. Going to college provides you with several career paths to choose, which generally lead to a salary of over 40,000 per year, whereas with hustling you work with what you can get making barely enough to make ends meet. So although hustling is easy, college is a more beneficial and worthwhile option.

Samuel Nichols
12/11/2014 01:05:35 pm

The need for and college education is more important now than it was back then. Now a days it is required to have atleast a Bachelor's degree to work. If you plan on not going to college and do a sport or rap then you need true talent to make it. People who usally want to do those things have faith in themselves which is good but in reality they suck. Getting a proper college education is the way to go in today's society.

Hakkius Smith
12/11/2014 01:05:50 pm

I agree with Joe because hard work is behind talent meaning if you pace yourself, and continue to work hard you will have a greater chance of improving yourself. Not everyone has the hard work to make a living using talent, but if there is hard work, and talent giving, then that person is bound to succeed.

Brice Thompson
12/11/2014 01:13:15 pm

The statement that "college is not for everyone", is very true because if you can't do good in high school what makes you think college is for you. You might as well go hustle or do what you know best making profit instead of spending money at a place you don't belong

Jasmin Mallory
12/11/2014 01:34:52 pm

Having a education is very important because just graduating high school sometimes is not going to get you anywhere. It would be a wise decision to go to college giving you a better life but nobody said that you have to go. "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself"-John Dewey.

Brittany Frazier

I agree with Carvellion, because life does take you through some experience that you may very well learn from. People should view college as a extensive & valuable resource.

Cinthya Vergara
12/12/2014 05:41:09 am

I agree with Carvellion because Education is what's going to get you somewhere. Lack of knowledge will result in unemployment, which is most likely nobody's plan. College students are most likely to get a job over someone that only graduated high school.

Jasmin Mallory 2nd
12/11/2014 01:29:34 pm

Life is hard period, whether if you have a plan or not; having a plan just brings ease to it. You don't NEED education to be successful or to get up in life. It's just about the consistency and what you push for. There are some people that are very successful that didn't even go to college, you just have to be willing to put in the work and effort.

Brittany Frazier
12/11/2014 01:35:35 pm

Some people think that after high school their education has ended. Also the thought of they've learned all there is to know has occurred. In all reality we never stop learning. The older we get & go through life the more we learn from life experiences. College will help you continue you education & also expand your way of thinking.

Javier Garcia
12/12/2014 02:17:53 pm

Taylor Terry
12/11/2014 03:14:34 pm

I disagree with mentality and expectations of anyone who feels that they can make it with out working hard. To live comfortable and provide for yourself and family you must go out and obtain the education that's going to place you in a career to do so. No, I do not feel that college is for everyone but how would you know if you never tried it? In today's society it takes more education than hustling and "busting bricks" to live and healthy lifestyle.

Gabriela Zavala
12/11/2014 03:30:39 pm

Taylor's point of view perfectly describes the outlook on this whole thing. She explains how you can't be successful without hard work, but does it from different perspectives in order to fully understand the notion.

Gabriela Zavala
12/11/2014 03:26:18 pm

Life isn't a game and you can't base it off a hunch that you'll be okay even if you do or don't attend college or get a higher level of education. People don't tend to realize how much of an impact this can have on their lives, nowadays companies want people with experience, knowledge and an education. Everyone thinks that their sports career or their "hustle" is going to last a lifetime and if you're lucky then you might, but not everyone is that fortunate. Receiving an higher level of education can benefit you more by allowing you to try and do different things that can set you for a lifetime instead of a little while.

Yeradi Tonche
12/12/2014 12:03:37 am

I disagree with gabriela zavala since yeah someone can go to college and get a higher education , but doesn't necessarily mean they will be successfull. Being successful can be done through many different ways. There is other alternatives dreams can be achieved , and some things can't be just taught in a classroom.

Cinthya Vergara
12/11/2014 11:01:26 pm

Nowadays, education is fundamental for a better future. Many believe they can go further in life with a simple high school diploma. I consider in having a higher education, because as we grow up, the competition for jobs grow higher and higher as time goes by. And as a result, I believe employers will look into having the best prepared person suitable for a job. Ask yourself this, if you were to hire someone, would you hire the one with a high school diploma or would you hire a person with a college degree?

Yeradi Tonche
12/11/2014 11:56:23 pm

In a way I do agree with the notion that college is not for everybody , but i also disagree with just pretending you have a plan . It is true that college is not for everybody, but everybody has to work hard for their dreams. Life always has something different than want you plan to do, it's constantly changing as well notions and expiriences. One must always work for their dreams.

Caleb Wimbish

Everyone Doesn't Have To Attend College Because Everyone Isn't Comftable With School After Highschool . Just Because You Believe In College Doesn't Mean You Should Be Judgemental Towards Someone That Doesn't Feel The Need To Go . Everyone Have There Own Life To Live Based Off Their Own Opinions And Feelings . Furthermore, If Someone Wants To Hustle Or Bust Bricks Than That's Their Business And No One Else's .

Kyshawna Thomas
12/12/2014 12:13:34 am

College is something many people view to be hard, so since it is hard those who graduate high school just do not want even attempt to go. That essentially should be the case, by going to college and obtaining a degree there is a higher chance of that person getting a job. Just getting or job or thinking they can go pro is not a stable enough plan because that can not always work. That job obtained may very well not be able to provided enough for that person. So, why not go to college; this alone will put one above all the others without a degree looking or applying for a job. College could permit for a better future, so why not give it a try?

Vakeidria
12/12/2014 12:19:03 am

I feel that everyone needs college in some way, shape or form. If you have a dream of becoming a musician there is still a major available for you such as music, art education, audio technology, etc.. There re more jobs now that require you to have a degree and we're only seniors in high schools so imagine this topic years from now when applying for simple jobs becomes a more tedious task because the requirements has risen. Fresh out of high school a job paying $11/hr may look good to you because you haven't assumed any real "Grown up" responsibilities. Living out on your own requires much more than $11/hr unless you plan on staying with your parents which I know most seniors would rather not do, because although you're grown you still have rules to abide by. It's a domino effect of things that you don't want to happen throughout your life, such as having to tell your children that you don't own a degree and have never been to college. I think It's worth a try for everyone for the experiences and educational background in whatever it is that you aspire to be in life.

I agree because People who go to college open up their choices for jobs. Many jobs these days require a college degree. Plus, college graduates have less chance of losing their jobs. College is not for everyone, its viwed as a higher level of education as well as a adventures way to learn new things. College is used for

College isn't for everyone but it can lead to much success in life. People don’t tend to realize how much college has an impact on their lives. Numerous companies want employees with knowledge and education on the job requirement. Selling bricks, drugs, killing, and hustling can lead those individuals down a path like prison or death. Those thugs, gangsters, and hood rats will not be able to learn new things or go on adventures because they wanted to be a follower and sell drugs. College really does play a huge role in the general public lives.
