Why Does It Matter?

2/27/2023

Picture
With no father, no college education, no training and very few role models, an organization handed a talented, young, dirt-poor 18-year-old $420,000 per year.

He married his high school sweetheart, was never arrested, never used drugs, and never humiliated his spouse with rumors of an affair.

He was never in the news with so much as a parking ticket. He is an excellent father to his children, constantly supporting them and making them dream big. He’s always involved in their activities too.

20 years later. Same dude. Same maturity. Same wife. Same family.
Reputation is intact. Now earning about $2 million per week. Still one of the greatest basketball players on the planet today.

Lebron has sent over 1000 children to college fully paid for.
Analyze the excerpt above, then tell me your thoughts. If Lebron is making so much money, why is integrity important to him? Think and don't simply tell me "he's the G.O.A.T.," etc., explain it, then explain your thinking.

LeBron James had a humbling childhood. I would assume that the discipline and hard work that he was raised with remained with him throughout his career and adulthood. The hard work that it takes to reach such success requires high morality both in the open and in secret.

K Lake 3A
3/1/2023 02:16:04 pm

Yeah, allowing himself to stay humble and solid, regardless of the success he achieved in his career, his life. No matter how much money or fame he got, he remained the same. As that is something rare amongst people that achieve a lot of success in they lives and then changed under all that success.

K Jacinto 6B

Yes I totally agree, he doesn’t let the fame get to him and he stays humble and makes him and the people around him better.

I like this comment because growing up without lots of money, really teaches you how to become a better person and to stay grateful for what you have, and to always work hard for more

Leonardo Guzman 1A

It seems that hard work, and perhaps hardships seem to be a reoccuring thing with celebrities nowadays, but it seems to be a part of life. This, and other comments really show how much of a strong person LeBron truly is. Truly, he seems to go as far as to fill the hole he had in his childhood with his future desires, nearing, or in adulthood.

K Jacinto 6B
3/3/2023 10:46:35 pm

Yes, he knows where he comes from and he knows his values, he wouldn’t want to lose any of his legacy.

R. Waits 7B
3/2/2023 09:55:19 am

Exactly. The reason that he became the person he is today is because of that humbling background. No one knows just what he went through. Integrity certainly has taught him and made it important.

J. Castillo 3A

Yes, LeBron's discipline and hard work has helped him through his career leading him to places.

I agree with you, peoples childhoods usually are the reason for how they act as adults. He had a very humble childhood so it makes sense for that to carry on into his adulthood. He worked hard and i'm glad he didn't abandon his morals when he gained fame and money.

Shamarian Samuels

i feel like he had discipline and was able to put in the hard work and that would stood with him his whole life and what he had to reach to have all that success and a high mantality in public and off public

K Lake 3A

Allowing him not to quite when it got tough in his career because he already went through hardship earlier in life, which carried on as he became a man.

Leonardo Guzman 1A
3/2/2023 08:43:21 am

I highly agree with this, because as someone who too, has been through discipline, it is known that pain makes you stronger. We all go through hardships, obstacles in life, but it helps us work to get where we need to go. Because after pain, there is pleasure, and after sorrow, there is happiness, one misfortune goes, another comes.

E. Adame 2A
3/2/2023 03:35:41 pm

I think his past really affected him with his future because he wants to be the best version of himself and is. Lebron is hard working and is very involved with family and is a overall great person.

C Valdez 6B
3/3/2023 11:59:15 am

I agree the hard work and discipline he put out when he was young stuck with him throughout. Integrity is important to him because he was good person before and he didn't let money change him. He's already good person so he doesn't have to act like he is.

Leonardo Guzman 1A
2/28/2023 09:20:19 am

To start off, I had no idea Lebron had went through these hardships in life, but it is to be expected after all. Now that I've read this, I can see that now I think more differently of him, very interesting. As for integrity, he does really seem to have the qualities, alongside the strong principles. I can see why it is important to him, because he really does show his strong principles and values towards us.

M.Banks 6B
3/1/2023 04:48:40 pm

I agree with this comment because LeBron giving back to his community is like that saying, give to others what you never had that’s exactly what he did. He gave to others and just imagine how many lives he just turned around, just gave another human being. Hope in faith to live another day because he shined his beautiful light on them.

J blackmon 2A

R. Waits 7B

This is exactly how I'm feeling, honestly. I had no idea that he came from the deep depths of childhood. Seeing him succeed while keeping his lovely attributes shows that integrity stays within.

I agree with you the rough up bringing helped him because the person he is today

Alexia Ruiz 1A
3/2/2023 10:54:51 pm

I also wasn't aware of his background or anything about him really. I also find it interesting how he got to where he is without abandoning his morals. And his integrity really does show, in his entire life he's never gotten in trouble with the law, done drugs, or had affairs. I think he's a decent man based on this information.

c moore 6b
2/28/2023 05:19:42 pm

the hardship he had to work hard to get to the places that he is now and just by looking at it he seem to have some qualities alongside the strong principles towards him self but also other pepole and how they think of him and respect him as a person

Lebron puts the effort in what he strives for. Not only did he have a tough childhood , but he also had no training; it didn't stop Lebron from achieving many obstacles. He didn't let his surrounding bring him down, he only strives for better; and to be the best.

K Lake 3A
3/1/2023 02:13:28 pm

How I see it, God foresaw what Lebron James was going to become, regarding all the success and achievements, so he started working on him earlier in his life. All them bad situations and hardship he went through as a kid was to build up his character to become the person he is today the G.O.A.T, father , husband , and a man most importantly. He also showed him to be humble, even though, him having the success he achieved, still be humble because God got the power to cut him down if get to big-headed in his success. And , that why I think Lebron is the way he is.

M.Mitchell 6b
3/2/2023 09:16:23 am

I agree. If you keep your eyes on the target, HE can do wonders.

J Melgar 6B link
3/2/2023 11:23:05 am

I agree. He never let the fact that he had money and fame get in the way of how he treated people. Usually once people get famous they begin to act cocky and rude to others. Lebron on the other hand stayed humble, he stayed true to his roots. He continues to be respectful and honest to others.

Shamarian Samuels

3/1/2023 04:46:30 pm

I would like to first start off by saying LeBron is a very strong and powerful black man coming from basically nothing and turning it into something with pure talent and a good heart is just amazing and secondly, I like to say him sending 1000 kids to college paid off is one of the greatest things any human being could ever do and I feel like the reason he did this is because he could’ve had that life he could’ve been that one kid that didn’t go to college because he didn’t have enough money so for him giving back to the community like that is really important and honestly, I feel like we should see more celebrities and Influencers doing things like this

M. Mitchell 6b
3/2/2023 09:11:23 am

I agree, because it really just shows that he still cares for his community and those in need, regardless of his own success.

He is a very talented & humble black man & him staying humnle & true to him morals while having fame is something i commend him for.

F. Maltos 3A
3/3/2023 09:19:03 pm

I agree with you because he has such a good hearts since he had a difficult childhood and as an adult he gave back and helped other people even though he is famous. Which is why he is one of a kind famous person because not many famous people help others and are selfish. So I think that famous people should help out others like Lebron James.

R. Waits 7B
3/2/2023 09:53:15 am

Since Lebron came from a very poor lifestyle and barely having anything to himself. Being the same person made him the person he is now. The integrity that lies within Lebron couldn't/wouldn't change for anything in the world. Money, fame, cars, mansions, they can't change the type of character that Lebron is portrayed in his years of life.

J Melgar 6B link
3/2/2023 11:22:57 am

I agree with you. Even with the money and fame he has now, he still remains the same person he was when he didn't have the money and fame. It's good to see that he still remains to be a good person. I say this because usually when people get famous it gets to their head and they change the way they act.

R. Aponte 2A link
3/2/2023 02:12:26 pm

Lebron is grateful for what he has and humbles himself. He doesn't need an amazing, great childhood for him to do what he is doing now. He set himself to a higher standard and has completed many obstacles .

E. Adame 2A
3/2/2023 03:32:09 pm

I think because of his past and seeing where he is now is probably what affected him to be the person is today. I think it's really awesome that he is still being the best version of himself and spreading that kindness to others, really cool guy in my opinion.

I didn't know much about Lebron, but after reading it's very interesting to hear about him and what he's gone through. As far as integrity goes, I believe it's important to him because of everything he's been through. Although he is now a millionaire and famous, he is still the kind and honest person he was when he was poor and didn't have much to give. Everything that has happened to him builds up his character, no matter the money or fame he would still be the same person he is today.

F. Maltos 3A
3/3/2023 09:06:15 pm

I agree with you because how you said how everything that has happened to him builds up his character, no matter the money or fame he would be the same person he is today. Says a lot about him since he learned from having nothing to making money and getting fame, he is still humble and stays as the same person he was when he was young.

J Martinez 3a

LeBron James is a very humble person coming from nothing to something. He works hard and gives his best to what he does, and is a inspiration to many people in the world. Lebron worked very hard to get where he is at now and being able to help others. He didn't need to send 1000 children to college and pay their tuition but he did it because he never let the money get to him. Lebron is and always has been a role model to everyone in some type of way or form.

Alexia Ruiz 1A
3/2/2023 10:22:48 pm

I think money can either have nothing or everything to do with someone's integrity. And i'm not really surprised that money hasn't changed his morals or beliefs because he wasn't born with it, he worked hard for where he is now and is probably very proud of that. I feel like it's usually different for people born into it, like they don't care to have very strong morals or just don't care about things unless it benefits them.

R. Brown 3A
3/3/2023 03:38:27 pm

money has many uses and has a huge influence on people. People are willing to do many difficult jobs just to get enough money to pay bills and buy food. only those who can maintain their character when in contact with lots of money have strong morals.

A. Hernandez 5B

G. Castaneda 2A
3/3/2023 11:58:12 pm

Supporting his communities that don't really have much is a way to show people do not give up on your dreams and to stay humble. A humbling past is enough to carry on someones everyday life but Lebron uses that as fuel and continues to help others.

I think because he was born and raised from nothing he's a really humble person. He was already a great person before the money and it didn't change him because that's just who he is. LeBron James has always been such a humble person. From the excerpt, it says that he grew up poor with not much that a "normal" person has, 2 parental figures. Once he got to the status to where everything he does is judge obviously he can't afford to make any mistakes that is why I think he doesn't get into any trouble. Also he gives back so much because he doesn't want kids to go through what he had to with only having his mom around and being poor.

After reading this excerpt, Lebron has always been a humble person since he was young. Since he was little he had to learn from having nothing and being humble about it, to making so much money and staying as the same person. Now a days it’s rare that famous people stay humble because once they start getting more fame they change and loose their integrity. So Lebron James is an example of one of the few famous person that has stayed humble his whole life and has not changed his integrity. This is why many people inspire him for the way he is.

A guy like Lebron know where he came from, and he wouldn’t want to go back to that. He sets his standards and lives up to the expectations. He is a leader and full of confidence and humility. He’ll continue to do what he does for the rest of his life.

I agree. His childhood experiences had a huge impact to the man that he is today.

Yes, I agree knowing LeBron has had that same past I feel like he naturally sets standards for himself which causes him to be humble in majority of situations.

Lebron had a troubling past but that didn't stop him from doing what he wanted to do most. From his success he wanted to bring that along to other people and give them chances for their own success. He never changed himself for anyone he is who he is, and he won't change ever that.

Yes, I agree I feel like now LeBron has made it through the other side of his troubling past and knows that the grass is greener on the other side, he is trying to get these kids to see the same with their futures.

I believe seeing his mother have a constant struggle and not having that father figure there to help lead and guide instilled light in him. That he just made in his mind to do and to be better and eventually came the decision to stay away from potential possibilities that could set him back.

A huge reason behind why LeBron James believes that integrity is important was due to how he was raised. Despite how much money he made, he still recognizes the living conditions that he previously lived in. He wants to help others in need due to his previous condition.

I believe LeBron James helping these kids and paying for them to get to college is simply because he can relate to them. He has himself has not had an easy childhood growing up, and grew up without a father figure. Because of that I feel like it makes him want to work harder not to mention the stereotypes made about black family households not having a father figure in their lives. I really think LeBron is humble because he has been in their shoes and has made out to see the light in his future and he is trying to do the same for these kids so they can have a future as well.

After reading this passage, I think that Lebron James wants to help his kids succeed even with him around. Lebron didn't have a father figure in his life and he still succeeded but I think he wants his kids to succeed with his help. His underdog story inspires many people, through his rough childhood and no believers, he managed to keep on pushing toward his dream in basketball and recently broke the all time scoring record.

    Mixed Ink

Mixed Ink is our class blog, the window into our souls. It was designed to improve students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills by giving them a platform to provide meaningful content based on their interpretation of what they see.

Although the students receive a grade based on a rubric for completing this assignment, they are not graded on complexity of thought. This is a place where students of all levels can freely, confidently and creatively express themselves and their opinions in a nonjudgmental platform. They are required to respond to and critique each other, but degradation, slander, lewdness, etc., will not be tolerated.
