OUR history begins before we are born. We represent the hereditary influences of our race, and our ancestors virtually live in us. ~James Nasmyth Instructions: Defend or challenge whether the tools we are handed down from the past are sufficient to compete in a world that is different from the one our parent's knew.

Personally I am neutral on this topic, sometimes the tools that were handed down will be sufficient but then again that depends on the situation that a person is in. For example an old style farmer who uses traditional farming methods, that have been handed down, will be insufficient to compete in a world ruled by factory farming. In different situations it may be sufficient like an English teacher teaching English. In final words it all depends on the situation and the perspective of those people in that situation. There is more than one view.

I agree , I feel everything can't be told or shown. Some things just have to be learned by growing up and learning for themselves and not from another.

I don't agree with you Ruben. One reason being that the prompt said challenge or defend, neutrality wasn't an option. The tools handed down to us are important because without them then it would be extremely difficult to accomplish anything in life.

I feel to fall on both parts of the saying. Certain common sense issues that we have been taught can be highly used in the world today. However after the years since my parents been in this world , things have change. Some things can't be taught however some would have to be learned on our own as an individual. Everything will not stay they same , some things will , but what changes have to be learned and can be taught later on in life.

It's hard to say but, since things have changed since our parents were in school it is alot tougher for us students now. Our parents do their best to influence us while informing us about life in the future. They know themselve's that many things in life are different than they were back in they're days. So, to counteract that, parents strengthen us up to be able to adapt to the challenging world allowing us to sustain to many problems that they rarely had. With this being said, we are passed a sufficient amount of tools to succeed in the world.

I see your reasoning and conclusion as true except for the part where you say "a lot tougher for us students now " . I agree that we have -sometimes- the neccesary skill to survive in this world- if we don't we just learn the nessacery skills. On the previous topic by looking at my middle aged siblings I have had a lot easier than them especially my parents. My dad only went to the 5 the grade intill he had to drop out because of tuition and he had to work( this is was in mexico in the 50s). Also back then some teachers wouldn't just hit you with a paddle sometimes thell treat you in away that we nowdays would call abuse. My mother on the other hand didn't even get to go to school because she was so poor that she had to work to help her famaly- she didn't even get a pair of shoes intill she was ten or so. Compared to me if I was in there situation I could still get an education or at least be self thought by buying a cheap WiFi compatible phone at metro for $40 and use McDonalds WiFi to surf the web for all the knolege my little brain could hold. Shit my parents had to walk about an hour through the mountain through the trees through the trail( its now a road with actual cement now) till they got to a town. Luckily there lives improved over the decades. Anyway that is why I say that it isn't tougher on students nowadays at least not all students when you compare them to different time periods or geographical locations.

I agree our parents know what's best. The knowledge that i know was brought to me in my up bringing & has helped with problems today.

Things are not the same as they use to be it is different from the times back in the day. We have it easier now really we just dont apply ourself as much because we have so much technology to do everything we want to do for us. Which they didnt have all that when our parents were growing up. Things have been handed down to us and taught but we still dont engage into it.

I completely agree with you; Beyond 100% . My parents are wise , as we can all say about our own parents. But what they fail to realize is that we live in a new day, which brings new struggles. We didn't have to use colored water fountains, sit at the back of the bus (just examples. My parents arent that old Lol) etc. We live in a world where its every man for them self.

It's not about the tools you are provided, but how you implement those tools to fit your circumstances. For example, there are many occasions where people are forced into situations where resources are scarce or outdated. However if you play your cards right, you can overcome your setbacks. Even the most ancient antiques can be more valuable, and useful, than the modern technology that we have become accustomed to. Therefore, the tools that we are equipped with, old or new, are only as useful as you make them.

The tools that were handed down to us today are sufficient enough for us to compete in the world, cause the world wouldn't be were it is today without those tools, but the sad thing is we may have the tools but we don't use them all the time. to help us build better things in the for the future our parents hoped for us.

In my opinion in the days that we are living in now history is repeating itself. We were told those things that our parents and grandparents told us so we could be prepared in the world we're living in. I hear adults say " that ain't nothing new under the sun " or " we been there and done that ". I think those phrases indicates that the things we think are new are really old to them . So personally we should take heed to what they say & know that it is for our good.

The things I have been taught when i was younger is helpful to the world today because I know how to respect my elder and other people. The days we living in is history because i hear my granny say she weared the same type of clothes when she was my age. It also doesn't matter what provided to you it's how you use it as a person.

No, the world is very different now to how it was before. I think that depending on the circumstances, each stage of life is different, therefore the tools we have to address them have to fit the situation. Things that our ancestors lived, they learned to handle problems and situations with the tools they had at hand. It is a situation where over time things change and become more difficult, will continue to change and we can not solve just like this day because every stage of life is different. The only thing that we can continue doing for our ancestors is to use their same techniques but actualized to date. For example, the use of the telephone, before they had to be connected to home and there were only some of them, now everyone has one in their pocket and are easy to use.

I believe our ancestors fought the hardest battles, so we have plenty equipment to complete the war. Its jus the negative distractions that slows us down. Of course the way things are now wont compare to the past but the tools can be used in some kind of way once its broken down. Then again God let these things happen for a reason.

I think that the tools that have been handed down to us from the past are sufficient enough for us to compete in our time but the problem is that we don't use those tools. We tend to look for easier ways to do certain things but when we can't do it that way then we get stuck. We rely to much on technology to understand that with the tools our parents have taughtus are enough to compete I this world.

In all honesty, its not the tools we was handed to, when born, that allows us to compete in a world that is different than our parents knew. It is the quality of them. When materials are provided , whether it is in everyday life , weekly , monthly etc, it doesn't mean anything if they don't properly function. My Parents was born in the semilate 1900's which means their competition is much different from mine. My struggles may not be their struggles. They can only advise me from first hand notice. Again, which confirms that all tools are not useful.

Just like everyone else said its really not the same on how it use to be when our parents where young. And i parents stay on us and be real strict because , but dont get me wrong It's not good for parents to be too strict, nor is it good to have too light of a hand. Irresponsible parents ,like those that just let their children go running though stores without a word and then annoyingly freak out when they can't find their child...well no kidding! raise them to be equally irresponsible adults.Your parents sound more over protective than anything else. Likely very insecure about how society and the world are now. And while it might suck, it's better than the alternative of them not loving you and not caring what happens to you. Too many kids live that kind of life and just end up in some kind of mess forever. So yes i believe the tools thats been handed down to us are sufficent for us to be successful in life.

The quote above is true because history, in some ways, repeats itself. Our ancestors have experienced way more than us. And nine times out of ten, they're right. The lessons and tools they leave with us are very beneficial because back in they're day, they used "common sense ". Comments are closed.
