COVID-9TEEN Edition: Shelter or Not?

4/19/2020

Picture
History is being made and you are living directly in its footpath. In fact, you are the historians of this time. How will you conduct yourselves? As a clue, this 9-week series has been created for you to share your experiences during the COVID-19, Coronavirus Pandemic. It is not only responsible but imperative that you document this history as it is happening so that, later, you can not only reflect on it but hopefully, learn, teach and evolve from it.

Through creative partnerships, selected short stories, blog posts, images, audio and videos will be published on #WhenTeensWrite, an online teen library. And in collaboration with ART | library deco, an online digital art library, all your submissions will be archived in their online repository in 2021.

Over the next nine weeks, you will write about the different effects that the COVID-19 virus is having on you, your family, your neighbors, teachers, friends and people around the world. Each week, you will tackle a different category to gauge the mindsets of other teens and how you are coping.

The world is living in a very challenging time. How did we get here? Why did we get here? Here means that families are being forced to eat together. Couples are being forced to spend time together. Individuals are being forced to think differently about how we do things: shop, interact, socialize, worship. Businesses are being forced to rethink how they service their customers. It is as if  that the Universe, or an energy higher than ourselves, is sending a profound message that the world needs to slow down and rethink or recognize what is really important. It took a potentially deadly virus to do it.

And slow down, we have. COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that's wreaking all kind of havoc around the world. It is stirring turmoil economically, spiritually, socially, emotionally, mentally, familially, romantically, academically, technologically, nutritionally and medically, as fast as it's being spread.

You are going to discuss these collections of turmoil so that the world can know out what you think. Of all generations, I believe that the Gen Zers, you, are the most effected because this will go down as one of the most impactful occurrences in your history. The following is Week 5.

In late March, local government officials began issuing Shelter-in-Place or Shelter-at-Home orders. This means that people are mandated by the government to stay at home and not go out in public. The idea is that this measure could help limit the spread of the virus. As a result, nonessential businesses had to close and people's movements were limited. The media soon began reporting that in areas where people obliged the order, spread of the virus was slowing. However, soon, the orders were being extended and in cities in some states, people began protesting the orders. On the other end of the spectrum, people appreciated the efforts of the government to protect the public. Whatever the effects, it has been a roller coaster ride from coast to coast. And in the end, to Shelter-in-Place or not to Shelter-in-Place, that is the question.
Read this post in its entirety. Consider it, then comment intelligently, academically, respectfully and with fidelity on the following prompt: In explicit detail, discuss your observations with how people you know and other people in the community are handling Shelter-in-Place and Stay-at-Home orders. Make observations about how we, in the United States, compare with other countries and the impact you think general behavior will impact the near future.

So far, the stay at home orders that have been announced in various states all look pretty similar, requiring residents to stay indoors except for certain essential activities, which include buying food and seeking medical treatment. Officials have emphasized that the orders do not completely bar people from leaving their homes; for example, residents are allowed take walks — provided they stay at least six feet away from anyone not in their household — and go to grocery stores. In California, most retail stores and corporate offices in the state have been ordered shut. However, “essential” businesses like grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, and laundromats remain open, and municipal services like buses will continue to run. Residents are not supposed to leave home for work unless they work for an “essential” business, which includes health care.
The executive order announced in New York is similar. All nonessential businesses have been ordered to keep workers home, though this doesn’t include grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants and bars (which can offer takeout and delivery only), laundromats, health-care operations, child care, and other essential services. Public transportation will keep running to allow essential workers to commute, though New Yorkers should not use it unless absolutely necessary. Governor Andrew Cuomo also banned “all nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason.”

In all honesty, I believe that sectors like the retail sector and the food sector should practice the same guidelines and at the same time still stay open better yet all stores, small businesses big businesses and any business should practice the same guidelines instead of closing and loosing money.

It is clearly known that many businesses have shut down across the county, although there are some businesses that are still open such as fast food and grocery stores. These people work hard everyday to accommodate us to the best of their abilities. These hard working Americans deserve the same safety precautions as us quarantined citizens and not just a glass shield at a place of business. It should be mandatory that these companies practice proper sanitation. I also believe that it should be mandatory that workers wear a mask as well as customers because a worker could possibly spread something to customers

I agree with your comment, but I also think that construction workers and other businesses like restaurants should be ordered to shut down because we never know who could have the decease and also to keep the people safe.

I agree with your comment because people should only go out if it’s important, not to go out for fun. People should listen to the orders the governor gives so we can go back to our normal life’s.

I think that we should take some preliminary cautions but we should also look into our rights and how these orders will affect our community

Yes all of that’s is true, facts actually. Your comment is not telling us how this is effecting your community or the people you know. So I partially agree.

You may also need to leave the house for medicines or other essential resources. But there are things you can do to keep yourself and others safe during and after these excursions.

When you do leave your home, wipe down any surfaces you come into contact with, disinfect your hands with an alcohol-based sanitizer and avoid touching your face. Above all, frequently wash your hands — especially whenever you come in from outside, before you eat or before you’re in contact with the very old or very young.

JJ

I do agree. Increasing your use of sanitation is very important especially for those that suffer from underlying medical issues it is very important to also follow cdc guidelines such as social distancing orders to protect those with health is but also fight this infections decease. Also, the NIAID’s director Dr.Fauci has a couple of small guidelines you should also look into in order to stay safe.

I do believe it is important to stay clean throughout this pandemic but we should also be questioning the CDC’s Guidelines with or without this virus

J.Morales 4th period

Thats completely right! I think sanitizing all the surfaces we touch and making sure our hands are clean could help the decease stop spreading and protect the people in our community

I agree people should sanitize everything they come in contact with. This pandemic is forcing people to be cleaner & more cautions, which a lot should’ve already been doing.

The stay at home order has effected me in a good way. I am able to go to work as I am an essential worker, I’ve gotten things done around the house that school was getting in the way of even though school and education period is essential to the soul and mind but, this order should help many many people that struggle to do daily objectives because either work family or something else is interfering with what we have going on a daily basis.

I strongly Agree That the Stay At Home Order Affected Me Inna Great Way. It allowed My Family To Grow Closer And things that needed To get done around The House To get Done . But On The Other Hand It Kind Of Affected Me In a negative Way Im not a In The House Person .

I strongly agree that this stay at home order is a good thing because not only is it protecting you from the virus but it also making your family come closer. But if u think about it it’s also a bad thing because if people continue to not follow the sanitation of keeping clean it would make it harder for others who’s not trying to get the virus. I also believe that everyone should keep clean in many ways to stay healthy and not get the virus.

The stay at home order has affected me in a good way as well. During the epidemic I’ve used this time constructively to understand myself in a more complex manner. Such as the details of my life that I never truly payed attention to like the ability to go to school. It is truly a gift to have school yet alone having free school as well because education is not free everywhere. I have noticed that our generation takes almost every we have for granted and we only realize these things in situations like this. I feel like it is the simple fact of something being taken away that we are use to having. If a spoiled child suddenly gets everything taken away from them of course they are going to realize that what they had was a privilege and not a necessity.

The Shelter in place and Stay at home orders have impacted my family in a good way. Back then we weren't the type to always be washing our hands before we ate or to be really careful with the things we touched. Now we make sure we wash our hands a lot and also not to touch things that people might have touched. I think our community is doing good but not great because theirs still people breaking the rules about staying at home. I've seen that people still go to the park have car meets and lots of other things that involve interacting with others. I think we in the United States are doing very bad compared to other countries because we are way above all of them in COVID-9 cases and its for the same reason that some people can't understand that this virus can spread very easy. I hope that in the future this Virus helps us do more things without being in contact with a large group of people and also help us value what we have.

The shelter in place has changed so many things in society. Many people have actually listened to the order and have stayed home, but many people are still going out and not staying six feet away or there’s more than ten people. Honestly I don’t think the shelter in place is helping. The United States is number one with the most Covid 19 confirmed cases and deaths. This Covid 19 is going to change society in the future, because people are going to want to be more careful and business are going to want to limit the people in there store. Covid 19 impacted this society in a good and bad way. People should just stay safe and take care of their love ones. This Pandemic has also made many people go through depression an also get many suicidal thoughts people really out here going crazy.

A. Segura 6th period
4/24/2020 09:28:14 pm

This was actually kind of spot on. Shelter in place can’t work if everybody isn’t willing to comply with the rules and this pandemic is going to be a big moment for us because this generation has never really been through something like this. I also agree with the pandemic making people with mental illnesses worse. Even with a phone , or books and coloring sheets, nothing can help right now because some of the things people used to cope with their depression or anxiety can’t be used right now because of what we’re going through right now. Online therapy sessions don’t always help somebody like a face to face session does from what I heard.

The people I know are not handling the stay at home order to well. They are not listening. They are still behaving as if there is not pandemic. My community is getting restless I can see a lot more people out walking just to get out. They sometimes do get closer than 6ft to others. I can tell that the United States is very disobedient. Other countries are listing to there government. Italy is actually staying inside. This behavior I’m seeing is just going to enable more people to not listen to the government in the future.

A. Segura 6th Period
4/24/2020 09:23:31 pm

I couldn’t agree more. It’s mostly teenagers that aren’t taking this pandemic serious. Some don’t even care about the 6 ft rule at all. All those other countries that listened have shown to recover faster from this pandemic and some are already back to normal from what I heard. I also agree with the government part. the government has been slacking on becoming more strict which is going to make people think it’s okay to be disobedient.

This stay at home order has affected my life in a good way. Me and my family are spending more time together. This virus has made me realize that some things are way more important than then just going out. Its best to always be with your family.

A.Segura 6th Period

The stay at home order has affected my family, friends, and I in a good, and bad way. It has given us the opportunity to be able to get closer to your family and have a higher type of respect for everybody working in hospitals right now. It has also taught us how important it is to constantly wash your hands and take precautions. Although, sometimes I feel like a lot of people here in the United States aren’t taking this as seriously like other countries are. Some people think it won’t affect them because they’re healthy when there has been multiple cases of healthy people not making it. They’re also leaving the house and still proceeding to hang out with large groups ,making it easier for them to catch the virus. With more people getting the virus, the more we stay in and it affects people in a lot of ways such as those with mental illnesses and those who are living in toxic households can’t leave the house and getaway like they used to.

I agree the Coronavirus have affected many families including my family. Because of the Coronavirus we have to stay away from each other and we also have to wear mask everywhere we go and sometimes it is hard to breathe wearing that mask. And because of it I stay in the being that I am seven months pregnant I can’t be outside or around to many people so I have to have a virtual baby shower and that’s kind of hard for me to do because I don’t want to have a virtual baby shower I want people to come to my house to bring the gifts. I just hope it get better before my Baby girl gets here.

I feel the pandemic has change everyone’s lives because it’s having us live differently n they closing down stores etc.. the pandemic is getting serious and no one is taking in consideration of the virus people are not following guidelines and for what I know it’s suppose to b another outbreak.

Due to Covid-19 people all over the world have changed their way of living and gone into social isolation. There are many conspiracies as to what this virus is and how it affects us . In my opinion this is bigger than some sickness that the government and wealthy people of the world want to protect us from . This is about economic power and the ability to control people under one order . For years we have seen several different economic downfalls in America that leave many people without jobs and forces us to find new ways of living . The most impacted communities of this virus are lower class living and black and brown communities . We suffer the most during this time due to lack of resources and unhealthy ways of living . As a race we have to come together to protect our people . I hope that this pandemic awakens people to a higher thinking and brings wisdom into our lives . We need to stop and think are we really free ? Is this going to be our way of living for years to come ? Will this happen again? If we don’t get up and start questioning the people in power soon enough those simple rights we do have will be taken away from us . This is a time for us to stand up and create our own resources to protect us from the ways of the world .
