The picture represents a relationship that is fuel by greed. The man in the picture has a chain locked to everything to shows that he is not willing to give up or open up to others. The woman as seen in the picture has broken up with the man, the chain refers to the relationship being destroyed.

I agree because it seems like the guy have chained down everything and is probably full of greed. He seems like someone who would not let go of anything he gets a hold of. So it seems that the girl forcefully broke off the chain to not be chained by the greedy guy.

I agree with how you said the chain locked to everything to show that he is not willing to give up or open up to other. I feel like the way picture was illustrated is very powerful. The chain could also refer to the strong feeling of wanting to hold on things but because you want to hold it too badly you end up breaking the most important one.

I like your opinion the man in the picture have chain locked to everything even on his wife. But the chain might not only be referred to relationship I think the chain might be referred to being an overlord or being an owner because they were also tie up to multiple different things in the room.

WOAHHHH, thanks for enlightening me omg... your thinking's so deep man. I couldn't agree any more than this. In fact, thinking about another perspective is impossible lol. The chain that locks to everything symbolizes how "he's not willing to give up or open up to others" and because the chains all link to his brain, not other parts of the body, I would assume that it is indeed, his mindset that isn't willing to make sacrifices. The mindset that attaches itself with something he feels like believing.

I really like you take on this. When I saw this image I had a thought similar to yours that popped up to my mind, but I thought the man looked to miserable, with no mouth to speak from to be selfish or greedy. But upon further inspection with how you described the image, it may very well be symbolizing of the man not willing to open up instead. Great find.

Another thing that I noticed was in order for the woman to destroy the chain, she would've had to be chained first. Comparing her to the other things that were changed, it can also be theorized that this man treated the woman like his other material possessions, and "chained" her to him like he chained the other things. The only difference is a person can break this chain anytime.

Hazeljoy (Creative writing Block B)

I like how you see describe the chain as greed, and I agree because a lock means that you have set your eye on something and won't let go. Wow I did not initially see at that way aat. all. Now that you said it, that's another way that I see it now. You can look at the woman walking out and feel some sort of evil energy from her as well. He might be the one fueling the attachment of the man.

"The man in the picture has a chain locked to everything to shows that he is not willing to give up or open up to others." I agree with the greed part that you said, but I disagree with the rest. I think the chains represents more of the man's need for control rather than unwillingness to open up. The broken chain I also agree it represents the girl finally walking away from the guy.

Tanya (English 9C)

I like your take on this picture because you said guy "has chains locked up to everything and is not willing to give up or open up to others" and I can really see that in the picture. You also pointed out the broken chain on the ground and it means the relationship is destroyed. I really like the little detail you picked up.

Kim-Hun (Creative Writing Block E)

Talking about greed is a big brain analysis. We can also see how lifeless and stiff the man looks in the picture. I believe that is what greed does to a person. You become superficial, and eventually lose your soul. Greed makes you lose the human part of you and replaces it with object attachments.

I really like your explanation to this photo that the chain refers to the relationship being destroyed. I also agree with you that the woman in the photo seems to be broken up with the man when she walks away and didn't look back on the man. I like the way you interpret the picture to be, which is similar to how I interpret mine, but in a different context. The chain, just as you say, shows that he want to have some form of control over something else. And in the end, the chain broke around the woman's leg, thus ending the relationship and freeing her over his control.

EngEng Creative Writing Blk B

I agree with some parts, but I think the chains refer to him being stuck and cannot let go of items. On the other hand, the woman on the right is already freed herself by letting him live a life like he wanted. I also think that the man is materialistic.

SaoChi (Creative Writing Block B)
9/13/2021 03:42:43 am

I think the man in the picture wants everything to be his own and his own only. He probably doesn't let go of everything easily and probably thinks he has a higher authority than others. And in the picture it shows that the girl is leaving because she is done being chained down by him. He is known as someone full of himself or a greedy person who wants everything for his own.

The man is probably holding onto his "properties" too much to the point where is is unable to hold onto the woman, therefore the woman has reached her limits and leave him instead. When you talked about the chain, I would like to add on. I think there is a symbolism when the artist uses the chain instead of other materials like rope or string. The chain symbolizes how deeply he is attached to what he believes or have. Chains are hard to break and the fact that the girl could break it means that she has enough will and motivation to leave the guy.

Benny (Creative Writing F)
9/16/2021 03:43:15 am

This is a really interesting and cool way to look at it. Most people saw the picture as the man being a control freak and the girl finally leaving. Making the guy the victim is a really cool and new concept.

Asia Creative Writing B
9/13/2021 11:31:04 am

The picture reflects how greed and the inability to change or leave somethings can make you lose the most important thing to you. This picture shows how the man has lost the woman, though he feels grief but he still doesn't break the "chain" to get her back. He then would not feel any value of the things that are left with him.

Auto (Creative writing block F)
9/14/2021 01:49:42 am

Yes, I agree that greediness can make you lose someone you love but from the picture I think the man doesn’t even love the women. The man doesn’t look sad or have any expression looking at his ex wife. It doesn't change his greediness since the chain are still there.

Vivi Creative Writing B
9/14/2021 03:02:06 am

When you mentioned the inability to change or leave somethings is very true because you cannot "own" something forever and you have to learn how to let go. It shows that if you hold onto something so much to the point where you look past the reality you will lose one of the most important things to you. This is also a form of an attachment he has.

Jack Eng 9 C&G

Roman (Creative Writing Block B)
9/17/2021 08:40:25 am

Auto (Creative writing block F)
9/14/2021 01:43:26 am

The image show a relationship between a greedy man and a women. The chain tell us that the man think that everything in the house is his property including his wife which is a living thing. The women used to be able to bear with him but I think his ego is exceeding the limit so the women break free from his rule.

Vivi Creative Writing Block B
9/14/2021 02:59:55 am

This symbolizes the fact that one is greedy and hoarding their personal belongings and by looking that the photo, the woman is probably sick of how the man so possessive of his things so she left him. The chain that was likely to be clung onto the woman's legs is now broken, showing that the woman has had her limits and that she is no longer "his property." This is conceivably a how humans are not objects that can be owned as well as a symbol of greed.

Allie (Creative writing block F)

the artwork in this picture represent greed and some of the seven deadly sins. the man in this picture is chaining everything to him, shows greed and gluttony of mankind. the person that was walking away from the man has escaped his grasp, "escaping from the toxic relationship." referring to the destruction of the relationship.

I agree with the fact that you can change the perspective around and the whole outlook of the picture will change drastically. 9/14/2021 06:22:58 am

Reading from the comments above, I can see a common theme of the connections we have on intimate relationships and how it doesn't hold on when people don't open up and get greedy.
However, I see the picture as a symbolism of how people, in general, is attracted to the things around them like money, power, or comfort, anything that is not human, especially our important person. It tells how extrinsic things can always be held tight but relationships, whether it's family or friends, can end at any moment without our willingness because relationships can be ended in both ways but attachment with extrinsic things can only be ended with one way, which is ourselves. So it gives us a life lesson of how relationships end easily as opposed to extrinsic things. And when the important relationship is gone from our life, we would have to sacrifice everything to risk getting the relationship back because the boy can't walk out of his chair without destroying all his other chains.

Kevin (AP Lit Block D)
9/14/2021 07:00:50 am

"Can't walk out of his chair without destroying all his other chains". I really like the figurative language you use here. I focused on his current state of being chained, but I really like how you talked about even if he wanted to unchain himself he would have to break everything around him. A beautifully sad symbol that represents many people who fail to see what's truly important

Lara (Creative Writing Block F)
9/14/2021 11:02:13 am

I really like how you said relationships between people can end immediately if there's no commitment. A lot of the times when people are blinded by greed, they take their attention off from their loved ones. They think that no matter what, their loved ones will always be there for them, but that's not always the case. I think the saying "you don't know how important something is until you lose it" fits perfectly in this context.

I agree, this could link to a real life situation when there are people who already have everything in their life like the chain in the man chair their greed will build up which it will block them to the outside world relationship, family and friends. How you interpreted the picture was really interesting to me. Your opinion on how the man has to break his shackles in order to get his relationship back somehow relates to the question of whether or not people would rather have a fortune and be alone, or be poor with people who love you. In lots of instances, sacrifices have to be made.

Kevin (AP Lit Block D)
9/14/2021 06:54:50 am

To me, this image represents a man tied down to a mundane life and unable to speak up. Maybe he's married, has kids, or just has some sort of responsibility that does not allow him to leave his current state of affairs despite him being miserable. The man not having a mouth symbolizes his inability to take action against this situation. The woman walking away symbolizes his dreams or his passions leaving him as he's tied down to everyday items.

Lara (Creative Writing Block F)
9/14/2021 11:07:18 am

I think your thoughts about him being tied down to a mundane life, rather than greed, is a really cool interpretation of the picture. A lot of people in society does have this problem, where they don't know the purpose of their life anymore after a few years of work. I think it's important to break out from your chains and take a step to chase back the dream that you have. You have to really live life, and not just be alive. But then again, I do get why some people just can't seem to change their current lifestyles, because it's really hard to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of fate.

I agree with what you brought up of how lives do not exist to be controlled or claimed. People should not control one another and hold on to them in a self-serving way. There are many people in a relationship out there that has been controlled by their partner in which is very unhealthy.

The man tied to chains and objects represents how he is stuck. As the woman walks away and the man is left chained up behind, it shows how is toxic the relationship is, the woman is abusing the man emotionally. She is treating him like an object, chaining him up. She is taking advantage of the man.

After reading several people's comments, I found it really intriguing how there are so many different perspectives to one single picture. Most people interpreted it as the man having held captive of the girl in a relationship, but your opinion seems to be the exact opposite. I definitely see your side of the story in the picture as well, but I still stick to my original opinion. The shackle with the broken screws on the ground continues to show me how the girl has broken free of an unhealthy relationship.

Your comment stood out the most to me, you're the first to say that the woman might be the one changing him up instead of the other way around, I think it's a really interesting spin on the image because I can totally understand where you're coming from, the man's face looked grim maybe the woman had done something to him, so that he wanted to lock everything up including his emotions? Your comment piqued my interest,I enjoyed brainstorming a reply to this comment very much.

The biggest message that I got from this picture was how different the 21st century is from the past. To our common knowledge, men have always had an advantage over women, especially in the past, when women were often seen as possessions. Walking away from the shackles, I felt a sense of women empowerment. Women are their individual self, and women and men should truly be equal.

Christine

When I first looked at this picture, I had the same exact thought too, usually we would see men walking away, however in this picture, the women was standing out, which made the women felt more powerful than the man in the room.

I agree. A lot of things have changed over the decades, and women have a lot more rights and respect (in some countries) that they did in the past. Women empowerment has opened to doors for so many and shaped the world into what it is today. Of course, things are and will probably never be perfect. Gender equality will probably always be there, just like racism. The only thing we can do is fight to change things bit by bit for the future generations.

What I see in this picture is that the man who was chained down are serve as the symbol of Greed. As you can see the man won't let go any of his chain even he have key to do it, he want everything for himself only and will never let anyone take it from him or have it. This cause a lot of problem in his life relationship, family and friend, the man cut ties with everyone like the woman in the picture. This is the quote I find perfect to the picture "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed" by mahatma Gandhi

Looking at this picture, I felt like the person is trapped in the room, or trapped in the space he is in while the women is walking away with the broken chain on the ground. It makes me wonder if the man also had his problems that he did not solve, and unconsciously been dragging his partner into that negative space with him. This picture reminds me of a saying that I've heard many times, "Love yourself before loving others." because in a relationship, it is a both ways thing, and there is no way that everything about yourself could be solved by being in a relationship.

Beryl (Creative Writing, F)

Woahhh, I has a similar thought too about the main dragging his partner into a negative space with him, unwilling to let her go. The woman really took the advice "love yourself before loving others" and decided what is best for herself.

I liked how you used "love yourself before loving others". I think it represents the broken chain between the men and women well. To me, this looks like the woman is breaking out of a mould, or taking a leap of faith. The man being chained to everything around him could symbolize an unwillingness to let go of the past or holding onto things fruitlessly to stay in his comfort zone. The man expects the woman to be chained to him, happy with the way thing are (or have always been), however the woman decides what's best for herself and breaks free, walking away from what was holding her back (literally, she was chained).

Nina (Creative Writing and AP Lit)

I totally agree with your comment, the man showed no gesture to reach out to the woman. The man is looking at the woman's back, which can symbolize the past which he is unwilling to move on from while the woman is facing forward, taking a leap of faith breaking her self from the chain.

Sinny (Creative Writing Block F)

I also felt that the man was trying to chain the woman to himself, which is definitely not the thing that the woman is willing to do, therefore she broke the chain and walked away from that man. To be honest, I kinda admire that woman's courage for breaking the "chain" in a relationship, because lots of people are not decisive enough to make this kind of decisions, and that's often the reason why both parties are unhappy in some relationships.

I like the way you connect the chain to the relationship. It can describe how to man used to be possessive of the woman that she can't hold on to it anymore. In addition, he might me holding on to ranks, frame etc. that might pressure the woman to leave.

Brendon (creative writing F)

The two appears to be in a relationship that's very controlling and unfair. Perhaps they're dealing with power struggle in the relationship, perhaps they're dealing with an asymmetrical relationship. Perhaps the women in this picture is much more capable than the man, who's tied down to his home like a stay at home dad and wearing shaggy clothes, whereas the women is wearing (what seems like) business attire. The women, feeling as this relationship wasn't enough, decided to leave, shown by the broken chains. The man, not having enough power in this relationship, wasn't able to speak up.

I don't think they are in an abusive relationship like the other comments suggest. The woman doesn't seem to be in any harm. It also doesn't look like the man is fighting back. I think this just implies that the man is chained to those things instead of those things being chained to him.

Personally I think the relationship between the man and woman has been severed, because of the chain that was broken and then the woman walking away from the man. I think the chain represent the man's will wanting to own or control something, my guess is that he became too controlling in the marriage or relationship to the point that the woman had no choice but to walk out of his life. The man is holding onto everything but her. One of the coolest detail I noticed is that the man does not have any facial feature while we weren't able to see the woman's face I wonder if this symbolizes that he was no longer the man the woman had fallen in love with, maybe he lost a sense of who he was, with nothing but greed and emptiness left (Like the room they are in).

I like how you emphasise the issues and dynamics between lovers. Moreover, it is interesting how the elements inside internally represent the changes in their personality. To add on, I guess because a woman's face determines the feelings audience would get, so her face has to be concealed.

Oh yesss, I like how you mention their facial expression, I think that's quite an interesting point to discuss too. Losing sense of self is a very good interpretation. If the man turns out to be a greedy man, then his greed and desire might cause him to lose his real self, with an empty space in his heart just like you said, which push the girl further and further away.

The picture shows that the man and the woman's relationship wasn't working out well. I think the picture is about the man and the woman who lived together before, because the chain on the floor is the woman's chain which connect to the man's chain. I guess they both have some problem and can't live together anymore, so the woman walk away and leave the man alone. Or maybe it shows that the woman can move on from the old life, but the man can't so he has chains around him and doesn't go out of the room.

That's when I guessed that the woman and the man's relationship is having problems and can't solve it themselves. I also agree that the woman is leaving the man to start her new life, and the man can't because he and his chain are "stuck" to the furniture in the plain white room which causes him to stuck in that place and can't move on with his life.

Many comments have mentioned possessiveness and greed, which transparently indicate throughout the entire picture. In my opinion, the significant point I've noticed is that the concentration of this man on his lover is equal to the attention he provides to the other objects. However, the difference between items and human being is that people have carried their own emotions, rights, and liberty. The picture above shows how a man is being tied down to a chair with multiple chains attached to different furnitures. It seems like he's staying there forever until he realizes what he have done in this so called "toxic relationship". I believe he's not a bad person, but rather an individual who just made bad decisions or has done something that guilty that he's not willing to admit. I have seen lots of people interpreting it as a greedy man, however, when I first seeing this picture, the first thing that came to my mind was the fixity. All of the chains in the picture represent the life that remains fixed every day. The man was living in a framed world with the same old stuff, same old style, same old routine, a world where he was unable to get rid of. The broken chain on the ground made the whole picture even more mysterious. We can see there's a woman walking right away from that man, so that woman was likely the one who was being tied before, and it seems like she broke the chain at last. On the back, we will see a man locked by many chains, and the furniture next to him is locked with the man's head. Everything was locked, except for a lock at the man's feet that was broken. The chains in the room were all attached to the furniture, but the woman was not locked. It can be known from this that the man put himself together with the furniture. He tried to lock the woman, but he failed. The woman didn't want to be controlled by the man, so she left the man.

Mixed Ink is our class blog, the window into our souls. It was designed to improve students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills by giving them a platform to provide meaningful content based on their interpretation of what they see.

Although the students receive a grade based on a rubric for completing this assignment, they are not graded on complexity of thought. This is a place where students of all levels can freely, confidently and creatively express themselves and their opinions in a nonjudgmental platform. They are required to respond to and critique each other, but degradation, slander, lewdness, etc., will not be tolerated.

    Bridge Builders

All subjects are vital to learning, but  English is the bridge of communication. So let's build the arch, one word at a time...
