STUDENTS: "In the event of my absence, you are to conduct yourselves with integrity, respect and discipline. Do not embarrass me, yourself, the substitute, the school, the district or your upbringing. You are to complete all assigned tasks the day I am out, assist and respect the sub and look after one another. After all, I don't give grades, I write down what you earn." ~ms. d
SUBSTITUTE: Hello, I hope all is balanced! Thank you for agreeing to guest teach my class today. Below, please find today's assignment. It is due by the end of the class period.
Emergency Plans

While I am out, you will read and complete the following tasks:
D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) (You must read at least three chapters during class today). As soon as the tardy bell rings, begin to read and annotate your book. Annotate for tone, diction, language and literary techniques.
Also, make inferences as you read. Do not write summaries. (Ex: Inference = the mother was angry. Summary = The mother walked in and slammed the front door. Her children spoke to her and tried to show her that they had made dinner for her together. She did not acknowledge them. She stomped past them without speaking and rushed upstairs. She flew inside her bedroom and her children heard the door slam.)
Then, complete the following tasks after each chapter. Do them all on one Doc in Google Doc (label them by Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3). Be prepared to turn them in at the end of class.
1. Write the following in a list like you see below:
Beside each, describe the sensory detail you experienced while reading the chapter. Then, write a sentence from the text that made you experience that sense. Do this for each of the three chapters.
2. Write a summary of the chapter at the end of each chapter. (Now, you can write a brief summary.)
3. Make a list of all the themes you find in the chapter. (Hint: Race Relations, Class, Identity). Beside each them, write an example from the text that supports the theme.
4. Word Hoard: Complete your Word Hoard. This means, circle every word you do not know. (Remember, this includes words you "think" you know. If you cannot give a definitive definition of the word without looking it up, you do not know it.)
5. Answer the following questions as they relate to your book. (Each response must have at least three sentences. This is not an option):
