Bullying at school: What can we do to help?
(Adapted from Bully Proofing Your School- Bonds and Stoker, 2000.)
According to Bonds and Stoker, a team of educators, psychologists and social workers, bullying is a form of violence that affects a large number of our students in many school communities. It is a small wound that is quickly becoming a gash in the heart of the educational system. Bullying is not as easily identified as violence that makes the front page of the newspaper, but it seriously affects the school climate and the lives of the students, and if you are a parent, the devastation it can cause a family is immeasurable.
If undetected and untreated, bullying can have long-lasting and detrimental affects on the youth of today. Bullying appears differently between boys and girls and at different age levels but we can’t dismiss it as innocent teasing, friendly play, or “that’s just the way kids are.” Adults in our school community must work together with students immediately to create a caring community.

Prompt: In literature, cruelty often functions as a crucial motivation or a major social or political factor. In life, bullying is no different for teens. Think about being a teenager today. Teens are always teasing each other. But sometimes, do you think these acts of cruelty become bullying? Read the excerpt carefully. Then, in a well-developed essay, analyze how Bonds and Stoker use literary devices to accentuate how bullying can be harmful to teens.
