For all my past students who have gone off to college, the military or to tango face-to-face with life, if you don't remember anything else I tell you to do, remember to never forget this: reach out and be...and don't ever give up!
My mom loved this poem. So, she wrote it on the flap of my baby book when I was born. As I grew older, I would refer to it when life got..sticky. Now, I'm passing it on to you. When you feel your grip loosening, come back to the middle...and read this:

The Next Chapter. Never Forget...

Kenneth:
I didn't sign up to teach to attend my students' funerals. You're supposed to be writing this for mine some million years from now. My heart is heavy with grief. My eyes are overflowing with sadness. I wish you'd called me like you always did when you had a decision to make. But that day, you didn't. I wish I'd kept in better touch, but that day, I didn't. I wish maybe, that I'd not teased you when I said I couldn't escape you, even after graduation every time you texted me or called. That day, I couldn't. And now, you've finally escaped. The only consolation I have is knowing that wherever you are, we'll see each other again. Read together again. Sleep well Mr. Atkins.
For your mom: Sending vibrations of peace, healing and clarity your way. A hole has been torn into the hearts of many Lancaster High School students and teachers. One of the best young writers I've had since I've been teaching, your son made an impact on my teaching and definitely on my heart, because as his senior English teacher, he taught me how to teach students who had the know-how but just needed some nudging. He thanked me often for not judging. I thanked him often for never giving up. When he graduated, he thanked me for not telling his secret that he loved reading in my class! You will find clarity soon because in this realm, there are no mistakes. **Peace be with you Kenneth as you start the next chapter of your life. I'll keep turning the pages until I catch up with you. Until next time, be balanced.
