Senior Projects - Final Assignment

Today, social media shapes society’s interactions with others. If you blog, tweet, post, share or have ever sent an email, you have an online presence.

Through this Problem-based Assessment (PBA), you can make the most of social media to help in your job search, market yourself or your business, get noticed by colleges, social organizations and more—create a digital portfolio!

Instead of the wear-your-badge-and-uniform-then-sit-down-and-be-quiet-in-class student some of you struggle to be on a daily basis, you can now highlight who you really are—your strengths, your talents, your accomplishments, and most importantly, your dreams and all that you hope to become!

Letter of Intent

You will need a Letter of Intent that gives a brief account of your education, qualifications, previous work experience, volunteerism, accomplishments and more. See Writing Wednesday for examples.
  • If you are going to college, write a letter to a college explaining your interest in attending their institution.
  • If you are going to the workforce, write a letter to an employer explaining your interest in working at their company or institution.
  • If you are military-bound, write a letter showing interest in whatever branch of the military you plan to enlist in.
  • If you're pursuing entrepreneurship, write a letter to a potential client explaining to them why they should hire your company for their needs.
Resume

You will need a resume that gives a brief account of your education, qualifications, previous work experience, volunteerism, accomplishments and more. See Let's Write for examples.

Written Requirement

Persuasive Argument

Individually, you will choose a position (defend or challenge). Then, in an argument with at least 3 pages, you will argue your research findings on the selected topic listed below:

Defend or challenge whether colleges and employers should use social media as part of their admissions and hiring process.

Specs for Written Requirement
  1. At least three (3) pages, typed. (No exception. Handwritten papers will not be accepted.)
  2. Four or more embedded quotes. (From credible sources, but works cited not required.)
  3. Site Map (see #6 below under Digital Portfolio)
  4. 1 Rough draft (With peer/teacher review attached.)

Materials needed:
  1. 1 Composition Notebook (For notes and rough drafts.)
  2. 1 USB or Cloud Drive (No exceptions. I will not accept, “I lost my draft, my computer lost it.” etc.)
  3. Lots of pencils (No pens!!)
  4. Turn It In account (Provided by school.)
Digital Portfolio

You are required to create a digital resume using your choice from a selection of social media, including Facebook*, Twitter*, Blogger, Wordpress, Tumblr*, Youtube, LinkedIn*, Flickr*, Pinterest* or any social media site* that you can transform into a STELLAR digital resume of yourself.

1. Materials/Tools. Decide which web site builder you will use. While this is not a group project, I encourage collaboration. It’ll benefit your grade. Choose from one of the following links to obtain a FREE website.
  • Weebly
  • Google Sites
  • WordPress
If you choose, you can create a web site with a custom domain that you pay for. The following are the best hosts I've found (and use):
  • NameSilo
  • GoDaddy

2. Specs. Your domain MUST BE YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME ONLY! Nicknames, or names that would be deemed inappropriate, are NOT ALLOWED! Your digital  must include at least six pages with the following headings (or headings that reflect same):
  • About Me
  • Academics
  • Work Experience
  • Contact Me

3. Really Good Traditional and Creative Examples
  • Micah-Jade Coleman
  • delmetria millener
  • Jennifer Turner
  • Alexis Roberson
  • Brandon Kleinman
  • kYmberly Keeton
  • Bazille Banks
  • Michael Anderson
  • Kim Rico
  • John D. McCarty
  • Elijah Thomas

4. Time/Project Management. Where and when are you going to work on the project? How are you going to manage your time to create written and visual texts to meet your due date? You will need access to computers (I have arranged plenty of lab time) and anything else you think you will need.

5. Evaluation. The journey to a place is always more interesting than actually getting there. Make this project your final journey to your destination—a new chapter in your life. Take a creative approach by adding links, images and video to make your online presence stand out. Have fun, but
beware, any presence of profanity or profane content will result in an automatic zeros for all four grades.

6. Site Map. Your site map is the blueprint for your website. Click here for an example.
