Two-time NBA champion, Rajon Rondo, returned to the University of Kentucky (UK) this month for a graduation ceremony.

His own.

At 39 years old on a Cawood Ledford Scholarship.

On their website, UK Athletics notes that this award is part of UK Athletics’ Post-Eligibility program which allows former student-athletes to complete their degrees with full academic support and tuition coverage.

According to AFROtech, a digital news hub for Black S.T.E.M professionals, innovators, entrepreneurs, & visionaries, the former All-Star point guard officially earned his bachelor’s degree in communications during the commencement ceremony at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY. It had been 20 years after he first enrolled at UK in 20024 as a standout freshman.

When he officially retired from the NBA in April 2024, he had amassed a net worth of over $45 million.

The rise of social media and crowdfunding platforms has indeed fostered environments where public displays of bigotry can be normalized or even celebrated. This phenomenon reflects deeper societal issues, such as the erosion of accountability and the prioritization of sensationalism over ethics. When individuals are rewarded for inflammatory behavior, it suggests a troubling shift in values, indicating that notoriety may outweigh moral integrity.

In examining why Black and Brown individuals might use the N-word within their communities, it's essential to recognize the historical context and reclamation efforts associated with this term. While some argue that its usage perpetuates negative stereotypes, others view it as a form of empowerment and solidarity. However, the juxtaposition of these two realities highlights a significant issue: the double standards in societal reactions to language based on race and identity.

Ultimately, the acceptance of bigotry online and the complex dynamics of intra-community language use reveal much about our society's struggles with racism, identity, and morality. Addressing these challenges requires nuanced conversations that consider both the impact of digital culture and the lived experiences of marginalized groups.

I think this is a really deep topic. It's true that people online sometimes say mean or hurtful things just to get attention. We need to treat others with respect and try to understand each other feelings and history, especially when it comes to race and words that have strong meaning.

It's interesting what you're talking about. Although this doesn't correlate to the topic at all.

Rondo’s graduation is a powerful testament to lifelong learning and resilience. It emphasizes that success isn't solely defined by professional achievements but also by personal growth and educational attainment. His journey encourages others, especially athletes, to prioritize their education alongside their sports careers.

Rondo's commitment to returning to school and continuing his education can be a great inspiration to many. It is never too late to accomplish new achievements. It takes a lot of courage to start something new, especially when it may seem that you're too late. However, he did not let this discourage him and I think his dedication should be praised and recognized.

I agree that Rondo´s dedication to go get his degree after being the best at basketball means that regardless what big achievement, you can get more in different ways like in education. Everyone can keep pursuing achievements.

The information and the knowledge knowing that even after minor sucess more can still be accomplished, it comforts me. Knowing that this man was able to get an achievement like this later on in life is good to know. I can only hope that this story can reach other people so that they understand that it is okay to not be where they want to be at right now.

Teniente. J 1A

Regardless if the achievement is small, or big, not many people can do what he did, many people don´t want to pursue education. He did what he did at 40 years old that many teens still struggle to get a scholar ship, but he did it. The key take away is that anyone can get full scholarship if they put the work, and dedication into it.

Sinkfield, E 1A

Rondo is a stand up man and even though he has a net worth of 45 million, he received a full ride scholarship.

Smith R 8B

Exactly! Just because you may not be where you want in life, it does not mean you are stuck in that position. I believe we all go through many obstacles in life & the more we overcome them, the more we get rewarded. Just because someone feels discouraged does not mean they should give up, they may be close to their goal & not even know it.

Colocho J 6B

Rondo's return to the university of Kentucky to complete his degree is an inspiring move that speaks about his character. This decision highlights a growing trend among professional athletes who understand that their careers and the solid education provides a foundation for future endeavors. His example sets a positive encouragement to others to pursue lifelong learning and demonstrating that it's never too late to achieve goals.

The University of Kentucky's Post Eligibility program is a great initiative for former athletes.

It's inspiring to see rajon Rondo return to complete his degree after a successful NBA career.

Palacios R 1A

Apparently, Rondo is one of seven Kentucky Wildcats athletes who returned to the university to complete their undergraduate degrees after their eligibility had expired??

Tapia, R 1A
5/15/2025 09:45:24 am

I think it's kinda crazy that even though Rajon Rondo has millions of dollars that he's able to just attain a scholarship paying for the rest of his degree which by all means is amazing that he's able to attend at his age and continue to pursue a higher education but it's more on the fact that many students are struggling to pay for their college in general and had the opportunity to use the scholarship money he gained from the Cawood Ledford scholarship to pursue their degrees and make some money for themselves as lots and lots of students struggle later to pay off student debts and Rajon Rondo would have no issues paying for his education himself as said in the article he amassed 45 million dollars im pretty sure he wouldn't have an issue paying it and giving other students more opportunity to gain an education.

Bronson M, 3A
5/15/2025 01:34:58 pm

I agree, its crazy that Rajon Rondo has millions from having success in school. It pays off because after college he can attain a high paying job. Scholarships are good opportunities for students who struggle with financial issues or don't want to get in debt.

This isn't the first time i've seen an athlete do something outstanding during their retirement like Jordan Farmar who earned his pilots license after retiring in 2016. This shows that he wasn't only stuck on basketball and is smart enough to start another career after having a lot of money as well. Many people should take this approach to life and shouldn't only be stuck on one thing during their lifetime because it's the only one that we have

Rodriguez Y. A1
5/16/2025 01:36:09 pm

I believe his dedication will pay off in the future, he didn't just secure his present by also being successful but also his long term job issue, if he ever needs a job he can fall back on his studied career he really has a made a prime example that there is no excuse. You can also achieve more even after being successful.

Marin, A 4A
5/15/2025 12:33:47 pm

Good for him he returned to finish his education. One thing I believe in 'famous' people is that they don't always add onto proper studies and research. His choice in communications can allow him to branch out into marketing, boosting his brand and promoting whatever he sees fit with his platform. It's proof anybody can still go to school, it's never too late. Yes, he has the money to put himself up for it, but it goes to show education really is for everybody.

Curlee A, 4A
5/16/2025 05:23:26 pm

Yes, good for him! Must be terrible to be unable to afford school, or be middle class and not be able to accept scholarships because you don't meet the requirements, or worry about potential student loans when you get accepted into a school. But yeah, good for that guy!

Rajon Rando returning to the university shows his dedication of going out strong. Him earning bachelor's degree and being a former All-star point guard is paying of for how hard he worked for it. Rajon Rondo's graduation at age 39 exemplifies the enduring value of education, proving it's never too late to pursue personal growth. His achievement highlights the positive impact of UK Athletics' Post-Eligibility program, which supports former athletes in completing their degrees. I'm very happy for Rajon Rondo, returning to the University of Kentucky (UK) this month for a graduation ceremony. I think he is a true inspiration of what present generations should aspire to be, and more. If he can do it why can't we all, obviously we all have our definition for success and he I'm sure feels fulfill and proud of himself for all the work he put and it paid off. Hopefully he keeps growing as a person and keeps inspiring others to do the same.

It's good that they have that program for former athletes to get a full tuition. More athletes need to be more aware about this program in case they want to go and get a degree. Congratulations for him that he was able to get his bachelor's degree in communications.

Mijangos A 4A

Curlee A, 4A
5/16/2025 05:11:06 pm

Honestly I give my respects to the hustle, so good for him. However it is absolutely insane how a millionaire got a full ride scholarship. This man has a net worth of 45 MILLION dollars, not thousands, MILLIONS. He has more money than the average person can conceive, and he got a full ride scholarship. No student loans, no budget, no worrying, no problems. If that isn't America I don't know what is.

Mijangos, A 4A
5/16/2025 09:13:28 pm

Gonzalez S 4A link
5/16/2025 10:20:32 pm

A millionaire receiving a full scholarship intended for financially disadvantaged students highlights the need for a more nuanced approach to scholarship acceptances. It ´s devastating that many hard working students arn´t given the chance to receive such big support.

I agree it is inspiring and this can help others see that it is never too late to do anything.

Rondo's decision to return to school shows great courage and determination. His commitment proves it's never too late to pursue new goals, and his dedication deserves recognition.

Yes. Many people get discouraged because of their age or what their career is and choose to not pursue higher education. hopefully this inspires more people to strive to be like him.

I think Rajon Randi renturning to the University of Kentucky to get his bachelors is a very admerable decision. His decision to go back and get his bachelors could inspire many current NBA players old or young to do the same even if they have to wait a while until they get their degree. This decision could also open up a wide range of opprotunities for him in the future.

I believe that it can also open a new path for many NBA players or any sports players looking to get a higher education which they can develop into a new career and new opportunities.

Exactly, this decisión in pursuing higher education can influence others to follow his footsteps. A true example

Rondo going back to finish his degree helps inspire other people to persue their goals even though it can be years later. It also says that he didn’t give up and chase his dreams. This shows others that it is never too late to go back and finish ur education.

His decision to go back to school after 20 years shows just how dedicated he truly is to his education. His actions show that education doesn’t have an age requirement, that anyone no matter their age can always achieve any level of education as long as they set their mind to it.

What Rajon Rondo did shows us that it is never too late to finish school. Even though Rondo had a successful career which amassed him a net worth of over $45 million dollars he still decided to finish his schooling. Rondo’s story is truly inspiring.

I agree, Rondo’s story is very inspiring. Even with all his success, he still made school a priority. It shows that finishing your education is something to be proud of, no matter when you do it.

Rajon Rondo is proof that it is never too late to go back to school to exceed your education. He also access millions of dollars from NBA contracts. He then obtains a bachelor's degree after 20 years. This is such a huge achievement for him.

Higher education is never too late to exceed and pursued, this was an excellent example on how nobody is ever too old or young for education. Because even so getting your Bachelor’s degree especially at his age is an impressive accomplishment.

I agree with you! It really shows that age doesn’t matter when it comes to learning. Getting a degree at any age is a big achievement, and Rondo proved that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

This is cool in the way that even though he made a career out of basketball he chose to go back and finish something that he wanted to do. He could’ve just be at peace with just making all the money that he wanted to further his education and finish school thats what makes this story so much better.

I agree with you even tho he was a very successful man and really had no need to go to school he still craved to have more knowledge

The way he went back to school to continue his education is very impressive how even tho he made it so far in his life and was actually doing good he still tried and wanted to go back to school so it is never to late to try to back to school again

I think it is great that Rajon Rondo went back to finish school. It shows that learning is important, even after making a lot of money. He sets a good example for others to never give up on their goals.

It's good he went back to school that shows he was dedicated to get his degree because that shows he has a future for himself. Him going back to school shows that learning is important. He knows he has a great future ahead of him instead of him dropping out he went back and finished the school year strong.
