Teachers pour an immense amount of time, energy, and creativity into crafting lessons that are not only informative but also engaging and meaningful. Behind every worksheet, presentation, or group activity lies hours of planning, research, and thought to ensure that the material connects with students and meets educational standards. Yet, it can often feel like this effort goes unnoticed or unappreciated, especially when students disengage, complain about the workload, or question the relevance of what they're learning.

Most students blame teachers for assigning too much homework, making lessons "boring," or not understanding their personal challenges. They often feel that teachers are out of touch with the pressures they face, such as balancing school, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, or personal issues. This blame can create a disconnect, with students viewing teachers as the source of their frustration rather than allies in their learning journey.

Let's Write!: Whose responsibility is it to make learning engaging and how can students and teachers work together toward a more collaborative classroom environment?

I would say both teachers and students share the responsibility for making learning engaging and fostering a collaboration classroom environment.Teachers have the expertise to design lessons that are creative and meaningful, but they also need to be flexible and attentive to the needs of their students. This means understanding the pressures students face, such as balancing school with extracurricular activities or personal challenges, and adjusting workloads or teaching styles when necessary. At the same time students must take an active role as well in their education they should communicate openly with teachers about there struggles and interests, participate in class activities, and take ownership of their learning. When students engage with the material and provide feedback teachers can better understand what work's and what doesn't. And for more as a collaborative environment can be achieved through mutual respect and open dialogue. Like for instance teachers could involve students in the planning of lessons or give them choices in assignments while students could show appreciation for the effort that teachers put into their work. Together, both can create a classroom where learning is not only effective but also enjoyable.

I feel the same way, however being in a classroom with peers who don't care as much can make things more harder or frustrating for those who do. The classroom should be a collaborative space where students feel comfortable enough to speek up and engage. The teacher and student should have some form of a connection so that way engaging is less scary or uncomfortable.

Being in a students shoes, I have experienced a dead silent and less energetic classroom with the teacher trying his/her best to teach. It is a lot less fun and engaging since it's like talking to a wall. If nobody collaborates on each side whether it's the students or the teachers the class won't go well

The responsibility mostly falls on the individuals who trains the teachers. They have to assure that the students actually want to engage with the assignments, activities, and work they get assigned. However, I also believe that students should understand that teachers try there best to make the class engaging with limited resources, and that the some of the responsibility should fall on the students to help with that problem.

The responsibility to make lessons engaging should fall onto the teacher. Teachers need to see that the best way to get kids to actually learn and do the work is to do it in ways that don't feel so stressful. Doing things like constant quizzes or solo long paper work will only cause kids to resent the work. But with that a way the students can meet the teacher in the middle is to acknowledge the hard work and time put into those lessons. Students should actually do their work without overly complaining. Teachers making fun lessons and then students taking the time to work on them and get the education they need would create a good balance in the classroom.

I appreciate your acknowledgment that both teachers and students play a role in this process. I agree that teachers need to find ways to make lessons engaging, but I also think it's worth nothing that students need to meet the teacher halfway by being active participants in their learning. And also by mentioning that making lessons fun can prevent students from feeling stressed and resenting the work. This is a great observation because it highlights the balance between keeping lessons enjoyable and ensuring that students are still challenged.

Yes, assignments should be more engaging and entertaining, A lot of students these days have a low attention spam and needs something to keep them locked in.I also think teachers need to start adding more group work because a lot of students have social anxiety which prohibits them from talking to one another and talking to the teacher. I blame a lot of this on the students but teachers should make the assignments more engaging and fun.

The disconnect between teachers and students, I believe, affects both parties. Students have seemed much more tentative and distant towards their teachers. Student engagement during a lesson is one of the top sources of teacher-to-student conflict. Students who noticeably are not paying attention or distracting others can be a cause for conflict in the classroom, as well as incredibly frustrating for many teachers.

As a student I used to be able to relate to this, I would constantly feel out of touch with all of the work some teachers had me doing so I could maintain my grade instead of taking time to learn the topic that was being taught. This caused me to disconnect or just not care about really grasping the topic at hand. I understand the students side of this topic, but I also can understand the teacher side of the argument. Teachers are forced to meet quotas with not a lot of time on their hands, or maybe not enough time to get the students to learn what needs to be taught. This leads to a lot of work being given to the students by the teachers, rushed content being taught, and frustration growing onto students and teachers. This is part of the reason for students skipping class, dropping out, and skipping assignments as well.

I like your perspective it highlights an important issue about the balance between workload and meaningful learning. I can understand how focusing on maintaining grades rather than deeply engaging with the material can lead to frustration and disconnection. While the responsibility of making engaging and interesting material lies solely on the teacher, its still more of a students responsibility to interact with it regardless of its perceived value. Communication and understanding it the only way the classroom environment will ever be able to be positive and engaging. When teachers forget that students have lives of their own and a multitude of other classes outside of theirs, it leads them to being seen as selfish and borderline evil. Its understandable that the teacher may have curriculum they are required to get through, but its ultimately their job to figure out how to shape and form their lessons in order to teach their classes. Its in this same veil that student must be held accountable as well. Students typically make themselves out to be the victim when they fail or do bad in classes when in reality, they just simply don't want to work. Students who have enough time to goof off with friends during classes are typically the one who complains about not understanding the teachers lessons. But it's usually only them who feel this way, as there are never classes where everyone is failing. All in all, cooperation and understanding is key for a successful classroom.

I feel like education is important and very much needed. Learning isn't always fun or engaging but everyone has their own way of learning and teachers have their own way of teaching. Now students could try and meet the teachers half way and at least pretend to care and acknowledge the hard work they put into the lesson plans even if we don't like them. Somethings do feel pointless but we can't focus on feelings just facts. Teachers have a job to do and not teachers care or try to connect with the students they teach but it takes two to have a conversation so students should try getting to know their teachers as well. Then they create a relationship and know a bit about each other that could help the teacher out when planning out assignments. Learning can be fun when every one is engaged or interested.

If the teacher only gives out handouts and dont even bother try being engaged with the class, it makes hard for the students be interested in, and like wise for the students if there not engaged or not paying attention to the class while the teacher is trying to have a more involved and interesting lesson then the teacher will be less motivated to do anything more for the class. Students and teachers should both be more involved in class if they want to have a better education overall.

It can be a responsibility for a teacher that did not put much effort or a student not putting much effort trying to learn and adapt to the lesson. Responsibility lies on both the students & the teachers to make learning more engaging. It is up to the teachers to come up with ideas to make students more interested in learning, but as students we should try to engage in classroom activities & conversations. I think that oftentimes we choose not to participate in class because we see that no one else is & we hesitate to answer questions because we do not want to be the only ones that are responding. Students & teachers can work together to make a more collaborative environment by sharing input from both sides. For example, a teacher may feel that the students in their class don't participate in class & that they're not trying, but students may feel that the assignments are boring, uninteresting, & not worth participating in. To fix this, students can suggest ideas to incorporate in class & the teacher can implement those ideas to further encourage learning in the classroom.

I like the way you also state that some students hesitate to answer questions because it not only holds us back but it gives the idea to the teacher that we don’t actually know the material when in reality we do.

I completely understand. When students hesitate to answer, it’s often out of fear of being wrong, which can make it seem like they don’t grasp the material. But sometimes, it’s more about the pressure of speaking up and the anxiety of not getting it “perfect.” It’s a tricky balance—students might actually understand the content but feel nervous about how they’ll be perceived. It’s important for teachers to create an environment where mistakes are seen as part of learning, not a reflection of incompetence. That way, students can feel more confident in participating.

I completely agree—creating a collaborative environment is key. When both students and teachers share responsibility, learning becomes more dynamic. Teachers can offer engaging content, but student input is just as important. If students feel their ideas are valued, they’re more likely to engage. Open dialogue can bridge the gap!

Give students a discussion prompt, question, short problem, or issue to consider. Individuals work briefly on a response. Peers report their responses to each other in pairs. Some (or all) pairs summarize their discussion for the large group.

It’s both the students and teachers responsibility. The teacher is in charge of making a lesson if the lesson is fun and interactive. The students role is collaborate with each other, ask questions if needed, and be up and ready to participate. Sometimes if students don’t participate or give any effort at all it makes the teachers life harder and make them feel like their efforts were for nothing. To make both sides happy or at least understand each other students should give their input. For example if they are not really a review method that the teacher set up, students can kindly suggest other ideas they have in mind.

It is definitely a shared responsibility. Students should learn to get off their phones more, yet a lot of teachers need to try harder to make students engage more. Many teachers are terrible, but a lot of them are simply just doing what they were hired to do, which to many students, isn't enough. Teachers need to find ways to make learning and activities more engaging without doing too much. Students should also be influenced somehow to get off of it more, beyond just "get off your phone."

Agreed, because I've had plenty of teachers who've taught a lot of content in a year, but made it fun and engaging. Back in 7th grade my history teacher made history fun, he made me happy to go to that class. Despite a lot of history being a pretty heavy subject in terms of content, I was blessed with a teacher who cared for what he was teaching, and cared how it is taught. Not to say students don't have to try to learn/engage within a classroom, but having a teacher that cares matters.

From personal experience I have had teachers I got along with, and teachers I didn't. I believe the blame falls partially on both parties. The student is required to engage with the teacher and subject matter, as much as the teacher should try to connect with the student. Throughout my life, in classes where I learned best I had a good connection with those teachers, and retained the subject matter exceptionally. If you ask me however, I think in recent times it is mostly the students fault, as many of them are mindlessly rude, incompetent, and unmotivated.

Making learning engaging is suppose to be a teachers job, usually when your teacher is teaching something their passionate about they tend to create certain fun activities so the subject their portraying is more exiting, and they tend to connect more with students making them care just by caring about them. It's hard for students to engage in a subject in which the teacher isn't passionate about because they'll just do a simple lecture and let you do the rest, no passion, no extra talk no extra detail or comparison of personal life problems. This makes students think that the subject isn't important. A way to teachers and students can work together and make this work is by getting to know each other in a more "caring way" this creates a certain familiar sense between students and teachers making it easier to focus, and students can try to be more self discipline and actually isten to teachers teachings so they understand more.

Boring talks where there are no examples or personal opinions, no story to tell. Not giving the chance to let the student talk. I've seen many times where a teacher is putting energy and effort into the class, but students just don't want to pay attention, but I've also been in class where it's just nothing, but boring book work and the teacher doesn't talk.
