Your Past. Everybody's Business?

9/29/2026

Picture
In September, a University of Utah controversy involving a student's social media photo led to online harassment and university investigations. The university subsequently dismissed cases against two students accused of involvement in doxxing. The incident raises questions about accountability, privacy, and how far online consequences should go.

Social media has a long memory. Something you post at 15 could resurface when you're 25, even if your beliefs, behavior, and understanding of the world have changed. Some believe people should always be held accountable for what they put online. Others argue that young people deserve room to make mistakes, mature, and move forward without their past following them forever.

People change as they grow, and the person someone was at 12 or 13 may be very different from who they become as an adult. Yet social media can preserve moments that no longer reflect a person's values, beliefs, or character. While accountability matters, the internet often documents mistakes without documenting the growth that follows. A single post can become a permanent part of someone's digital identity, regardless of how much they've changed.

Let's Write!
Should something you posted on social media as a teenager be allowed to cost you a job, scholarship, or opportunity years later?
INSTRUCTIONS

1. INCLUDE: Last Name, First Initial, AND Class Block. You do not have to include an email address or a website.

2. Respond to the post. Read the entire post, including watching any videos or reading any articles attached. Do not post vague or ambiguous commentary. Your post should have depth, be thoughtful, and provide specific, meaningful insight. Make sure it addresses the topic and encourages reflection, discussion, or a connection.

3. You MUST comment on at least TWO other posts from any student in any class. Your replies cannot be identical comments on different posts and posting shallow comments such as "I agree" or "I disagree" will earn you a zero. Make sure your reply addresses the comment that you are responding to.

4. Language. Do NOT use profanity. Vague or repeated responses will not be accepted in your post or replies.

5. Disrespectful comments will not be accepted and will result in a zero whether you do the assignment or not.

REMINDERS

**Set a weekly alarm or calendar timer.
Whatever you do to remember other important events, I'd do the same for this assignment.

**Don't wait until the last minute. Telling me that you didn't do the assignment on Friday because you broke your leg, for example, on Thursday will not do anything for you when you've had a week. Be responsible and accountable.

**How to post. Click in the top right hand corner or the lower left hand corner where it says Comments to access the discussion board. Once there, scroll to the bottom of the page to post a Reply. After, choose comments from at least two students from any class and Reply to what they wrote.

CAUTION!! Do NOT embarrass me, yourself, your class, the English department, the school, your family or your upbringing with tasteless, meaningless comments. This is for a grade.

DISCLAIMER: If you do not respond AND comment on TWO others, you will not receive credit for this assignment. If you do not write your name correctly, and I don't see your work, you will not receive credit for this assignment. If you use profanity, you will not receive credit for the work. It's all or nothing.

WARNING: If you post even one second past midnight, your comment might appear to be posted, but as soon as it is opened to be graded, it will automatically delete.

AI: A Classroom Cheat Code?

9/24/2026

Picture
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can write essays, solve math problems, answer questions, and complete assignments in seconds. What once took students hours to finish can now be done with just a few clicks.

Some schools are restricting students from using AI because they believe it encourages cheating and prevents students from developing their own thinking skills. Other schools are teaching students how to use AI responsibly because they believe it is a skill students will need in college, the workplace, and everyday life.

But you have to wonder whether students are actually learning if AI can do most of the work for them.

Students have always used tools to help them learn (or cheat), from calculators and dictionaries to Google and YouTube. AI is just the latest technology changing how students complete their schoolwork. The difference is that AI can do more than help students find answers. It can create the answers for them.

This raises an important question about the purpose of education if . Are students going to school to complete assignments, or are they going to school to learn how to think for themselves?

Let's Write! If AI can write essays, solve math problems, and answer almost any question, what is the point of going to school and do you think schools should ban AI or teach students how to use it?

Your Mistakes. My Problem.

9/14/2026

Picture
First, click the image to watch the video. Then, read and think about the following:

There is a particular kind of pain that comes with watching someone you love struggle and wondering if you could have done something differently.

Parents often question themselves when their children experience tragedy, make choices they regret, or end up somewhere they never expected. Even when their children are grown, that feeling of responsibility may not go away.

The mother of Lil Durk says she blames herself for what happened to both of her sons: one lost his life to violence, while the other son is incarcerated.

Although parents influence who we become, children begin making choices of their own when they become adults. Still, when something goes wrong, parents often ask themselves: What could I have done differently? Where did I go wrong? Could I have prevented this?

Sometimes blame comes from what parents did. Sometimes it comes from what parents didn't do. And sometimes parents blame themselves for things they may never have had the power to control.

Let's Write! Are your parents responsible for the mistakes their children make in their own lives?

Success = Family Support

9/8/2026

Picture
There is a lot of controversy over whether a person should be responsible for changing their family’s financial situation if they became wealthy.

For some people, success means making sure everyone they love is taken care of. For others, becoming successful doesn’t mean becoming financially responsible for everyone around them. It draws a line between where generosity end and obligation begins.

Whether your family sacrificed for you or not, or if helping becomes expected instead of appreciated, by most standards, if you become wealthy, you "owe" people in your family, just because you're related.

Let's Write! If you become wealthy, should you be expected to take care of your family financially?

Success is riiiight...there.

9/2/2026

Picture
Success can mean different things to different people, and its meaning can change across generations. What one generation considers a sign of “making it” may not matter as much to another. Think about the world your generation is entering, the things you value, and the kind of life you consider worth building.

As you think about success, consider where your definition comes from. Our ideas about what a successful life looks like are shaped by what we see, what we experience, what we are taught, and what we decide for ourselves.

Ultimately, success is more than a definition—it reflects what a generation believes is worth pursuing. As those beliefs change, so might the answer to what it truly means to be successful.

Let's Write! What does "successful" mean to your generation?

    Mixed Ink

Mixed Ink is our class blog, the window into our souls. It was designed to improve students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills by giving them a platform to provide meaningful content based on their interpretation of what they see.

Although the students receive a grade based on a rubric for completing this assignment, they are not graded on complexity of thought. This is a place where students of all levels can freely, confidently and creatively express themselves and their opinions in a nonjudgmental platform. They are required to respond to and critique each other, but degradation, slander, lewdness, etc., will not be tolerated.
