In a world where emotions are often filtered through expectations about gender, it’s worth pausing to ask questions about how we express care, respect, and affection — and who gets permission to do so.

A woman began to feel uneasy about her husband when, after leaving a dinner party at the home of their friends, the two men said "I love you" to each other before the couple left.

As you reflect on the prompt below, think about the social rules we inherit, the ones we question, and the ones we rewrite. Your answer is yours to shape based on what you observe, believe, and experience.

Let's Write! Is it acceptable for men to tell each other "I love you" on any day
--not just on ocassions, sick beds, and at funerals?

Yes, It is okay for men to tell each other ¨I love you¨, It allows for men to become more humane. If you disconnect a man from his emotions, then he will neglect all else. The words ¨I love you¨ Is not just connected to the romantical aspect, but a familiar and close bond.

This is a reasonable response as it helps highlight the fact that men should be more emotionally vulnerable.

I like your stance. we shouldn't dehumanize anyone and should allow for men to express themselves the same ways any other would.

I like that you said it allows men to be more humane, I think that is something we shouldn't even have to discuss

I like how you put that disconnecting from emotions does affect everything else you’re right that I love you. Does it have to be romantic? It can show trust and care between friends or family normalizing that helps everyone feel more seen and supported.

Yes, Men Can say ¨I love you¨ to each other. First, The words are not always connected to a romantical connotation, but a familiar and close bond. But even if there was a sense of romance, why would that matter?

kendell Hurrington4A
4/29/2025 10:04:44 am

Exactly right! there's no need to care about the affections of others if you don't know them. additionally, useless there's history between the husband and friend, the wife should be more secure in her relationship and life partner

Luster J, 3A

People always lose the fact that I love you can be used in many ways other than a romantically sense

It matters because there's a romantic connection and depends on the individuals involved.

It should be acceptable for people to do what they want, t shouldn’t it really matter me whether or not some is homosexual or not. Men saying “I love you” to one another shouldn’t immediately be seen as gay or anything like that, and shouldn’t matter to begin with.

Torres C. 1/A

Just because a man says I love you to another man doesn’t mean it has to be labeled or judge like you said people should be free to express how they feel without others assuming things or making it a big deal. It’s really about care and connection, no labels.

It is becoming more than acceptable for 2 men to express affection for each other regardless of its time or nature. as a society we are slowly becoming less and less bigoted, this is one of the cases where that's the case.

Torres C. 1/A

My mom always told me, "You never know when someone's time is, so do not be ashamed to say 'I love you.'" Ever since then, I live by that way of thinking. You never know when someone you truly care about will be taken from this earth. So to me, let people know you care about them now, and not just when they're buried 6 feet under.
To answer the initial question, yes, it is acceptable for men to say "I love you", that one gesture means the world to so many.

So true, life is weird in the way that one day someone can be laughing and talking to you, and the next they have passed and you did not get the chance to say a proper goodbye, so being able to say "I love you" to the people important in your life is always going to be acceptable, and important.

Yes, it’s perfectly acceptable for men two men to say “I love you” to each other on a day.I would say society often teaches men to hide their emotions, but expressing love isn’t a weakness it’s a strength. Saying “I love you” can build a stronger friendship, show support, and remind people they matter. Men should feel free to show affection without waiting for a crisis or special event.

Aiyanyo E 3A
5/2/2025 11:19:54 pm

I agree that social media has really ruined men being able to express their emotion. When they do, it's seen as "gay". Which in this instance, that's not the case

Castillo, V 6B
5/2/2025 06:42:39 pm

I think it depends on the type of relationship they have. It may also have to do with the way their family tradition is towards one another.

Malvaez M. 1A
5/2/2025 07:55:34 pm

It should be normalized for a men to say that they love each other, because it’s okay to show love for someone who isn’t your significant other. love isn’t always something that should only be expressed in a romantic way, love can be how a mother loves her son. For people to judge on how others tell or express their love to each other is wrong and not everyone shows love the same way as others do in today’s society.

Renteria R A 4A
5/2/2025 09:42:51 pm

I agree, it should be normalized for men to express love toward each other. Love isn't limited to romantic relationships; it can be deep, familial, or platonic. Judging others for how they show love only reinforces unhealthy emotional barriers, especially in men. Everyone deserves the freedom to express care and connection in their own way.

Thompson D. 8B
5/2/2025 09:43:24 pm

I agree love isn't limited to romance, and it's healthy and important for men to openly express love in nonromantic ways without fear of judgment.

Thompson D, 8B
5/2/2025 09:42:38 pm

Yes, it is acceptable for men to tell each other I love you without waiting for crisis or ceremony. Limiting male affection to rare moments reinforces the harmful idea that emotional openness is unmanly. Real strength includes vulnerability, and love between friends or family shouldn’t need a special occasion.

Edwards K.6B
5/2/2025 09:47:56 pm

Yes, certainly. Men can freely tell each other that they love them whenever they want to. Consider this: telling a friend "I love you" is the same as saying "I appreciate you" – it makes the connection stronger. Outdated notions of masculinity should not prevent men from expressing genuine affection. Speaking openly of love creates healthier friendships and healthier minds.

Mijangos, A 4A
5/2/2025 10:08:14 pm

Yes, it’s absolutely acceptable for men to tell each other “I love you” on any day. Love between friends, family members, or chosen brothers isn’t diminished by frequency or occasion, it’s strengthened by honesty and presence. Limiting such expressions to rare or dramatic moments only reinforces the harmful stereotype that men must suppress vulnerability or emotional connection.

Smith R 8B
5/2/2025 10:54:15 pm

Yes, it is acceptable for men to say "I love you" to each other on any regular day, it does not have to be said for "special occasions." Love isn't a feeling solely reserved for one's significant other, it is a word to show appreciation. The feeling of love may vary from the type of relationship people have with one another, but it should not stop someone from saying it if they truly love a person. Many men have good friendships with other men who they may consider a brother, not just a friend. Limiting the use of the word for men adds to the idea that they are not allowed to show feelings or vulnerability.

Lopez H 4A
5/2/2025 11:04:21 pm

The concept of men saying "I love you" has been seen in past years as something that makes a man less of a man or that they are showing weakness, but it is perfectly acceptable for men to say "I love you" to one another. It's a way for men to show their appreciation and respect for one another. Because love is not just a romance thing, it can also be a friendship based word and just in general it's a word that means more than love.

Aiyanyo E 3A
5/2/2025 11:18:43 pm

There's nothing wrong with what they said. Guys who are friends say that they love each other all the time. That's what you call bromance. There's nothing "gay" about it.

I agree but some men don’t like to say there feelings they just like to show it

Fuentez M 3A
5/2/2025 11:36:38 pm

Yes it is okay for men to say “ I love you” to other men on a regular basis. Instead of holding them accountable for an expectation and having them to suppress their emotions as a human . They should be able to show the world their love for their brotherhood just like us women do. If it’s okay for us to share and show love to our fellow female friend me. Should be able to aswell. We fight for equal rights and equal rights but when it comes to certain category’s we don’t fight as much. It starts with the little things so yes I know that men should be able to say they have love for their men friends just like we women say it to our female friends.

5/2/2025 11:54:05 pm

It is always acceptable to say “I love you”, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, saying “I love you” is showing respect in a way to your partner, showing care, and obviously love. It doesn’t matter where you are, if you love someone you’re going to show it and nothing should stop you from doing so. We need to express our love to each other because we don’t know when, or if we will get the chance to tell them again.

it is acceptable for men to express love and affection openly, including saying "I love you" to each other. This shift reflects a broader understanding that emotional vulnerability is not confined by gender. Such expressions can strengthen friendships and foster deeper connections, challenging outdated stereotypes about masculinity. Ultimately, the acceptance of this behavior depends on individual beliefs and cultural contexts, but promoting open emotional expression benefits everyone.

I think it's acceptable and should be encouraged to express their feelings more to each other since many men aren't comfortable showing there emotions to each other due to social pressures

    Mixed Ink

Mixed Ink is our class blog, the window into our souls. It was designed to improve students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills by giving them a platform to provide meaningful content based on their interpretation of what they see.

Although the students receive a grade based on a rubric for completing this assignment, they are not graded on complexity of thought. This is a place where students of all levels can freely, confidently and creatively express themselves and their opinions in a nonjudgmental platform. They are required to respond to and critique each other, but degradation, slander, lewdness, etc., will not be tolerated.

    Bridge Builders

All subjects are vital to learning, but  English is the bridge of communication. So let's build the arch, one word at a time...
