Your Mind vs Tech

4/27/2026

Picture
People now rely on their phones for things they once had to remember on their own, like phone numbers, directions, addresses, birthdays, driver's licence numbers, social security numbers, spelling, or basic facts.

Some people believe that constant scrolling, short attention spans, and depending on apps for every answer can weaken critical thinking. As smartphones have become more common, they have also changed daily habits, routines, and how people access information. Some people see them as one of the most useful inventions of this era, while others question how constant use may be shaping behavior, attention, memory, and decision-making.

Others argue that phones do not lower intelligence at all, they simply change how people use it, which raises questions about how technology influences the way people think and function.

Let's Write! Are smartphones making people less intelligent, or just changing what intelligence looks like today? Explain.
INSTRUCTIONS

1. INCLUDE: Last Name, First Initial, AND Class Block. You do not have to include an email address or a website.

Whatever you do to remember other important events, I'd do the same for this assignment.

**Don't wait until the last minute. Telling me that you didn't do the assignment on Friday because you broke your leg, for example, on Thursday will not do anything for you when you've had a week. Be responsible and accountable.

**How to post. Click in the top right hand corner or the lower left hand corner where it says Comments to access the discussion board. Once there, scroll to the bottom of the page to post a Reply. After, choose comments from at least two students from any class and Reply to what they wrote.

smartphones are not making people less intelligent they just changing how its intelligence works people reply on phones quickly to find info

I agree with your main point smartphones change how intelligence works. But I also think it’s fair to say that overreliance can stunt certain skills, especially in kids who are still developing them.

I also think people use phones to quickly access information which is useful in many situations. However, phones are bad to rely on because if those that rely on them for knowledge wont know what to do if the are suddenly stranded with nothing.

The creation of technology does show that intelligence has evolved because it takes a certain kind of intelligence to develop technology smarter than humans (supposedly), but the people who rely on it are the ones paying the price with their critical thinking skills. Everything people use AI for could easily be done with their own mind if they just tried. AI is the easy way out but in the long run, it definitely makes people too reliant. Then again at this point people that do use their own brain are just met with skepticism that they also used AI...that just goes to show that people really do think so little of the intelligence they possess.

I agree with this, its sad that people and even young kids don't even try to think for themselves before going straight to AI

Gonzalez ,A 2A
4/29/2026 11:44:28 am

I agree with you, because its disappointing how young kids wont even try to think for themselves.

Luna W. 1A
4/29/2026 09:18:51 pm

I agree, people who do rely on their phones or the internet too much does not really help their intelligence.

Calito V.
4/30/2026 08:34:56 am

I agree because yes technology is improving but AI is really thing the makes people dumb then they actually are the tend to rely on it to much that they can think for themselves.

Watson S 1A
5/1/2026 09:17:15 pm

I also think AI is a problem but i dont think its actually “making” people dumb. I believe that people stop using their brains as much so it teaches its users to rely on it.

Chavez D. 7B
4/30/2026 03:10:04 pm

I agree with what you said. Technology is changing what intelligence means in today's day and age. I especially agree with people becoming too dependent on artificial intelligence, and it's eroding their critical thinking skills, because I've seen this first hand in almost all of my classes, where the majority of the class is using artifical intelligence immediately on every assignment and its honesty disappointing.

I think that smartphones should not have been invented because what people do all day is nothing but be on their phones all day 24/7 and do nothing productive and scroll through social media and don't get off the phone or don't take a break away from the phone because the phones are messing up our minds

Amanda Lama Rosales
4/29/2026 09:13:46 am

I think its good that they were invented but we as people have been over consumed by them

Lainez, H 7B
4/29/2026 12:37:33 pm

I agree that smartphones have become a massive distraction that prevents people from being truly productive. Constant scrolling creates a cycle where we are always "on" our phones but never actually accomplishing anything meaningful in the real world. It is clear that this 24/7 dependency is hurting our mental well-being and making it harder to appreciate life away from a screen.

Gracie Ramos
5/1/2026 08:50:51 am

I agree that phone have become severe distractions that prevents people from being more productive through out the day. It prevents us from working towards our goals.

Luna W. 1A
4/29/2026 09:15:48 pm

I dont really agree with this. Yes, some people are on their phones all day but its not everyone and you never know what theyre doing on their phone. It could be educational.

Newbill, T 1A
5/1/2026 08:32:24 am

I think cell phones are a good invention . In so many ways our phones help us and are reliable . I do believe that it does cause a huge delay in people. Nobody wants to think anymore .

Valdez K 2A
5/1/2026 08:44:07 am

I agree. I feel like the main function of a phone is to call people. Outside of that, all the apps and other things that smartphones give us access to aren't necessary. Without social media, people would be more present in the moment and not given access to the curated lives of thousands of people. There would also be less comparison to unrealistic or exaggerated standards.

Amanda Lama Rosales
4/29/2026 09:11:22 am

I find smartphones easy to use and easy to get quick access from which is nice in the moment but for for the long run its pretty bad, kids rely so much on their phone that they just don't think for themselves and that even goes for younger generations which is not okay because what do you mean a 8 year old doesn't know what 20-10 is?

Thorpe, Zamyriah
4/29/2026 09:19:28 am

I agree, to disagree Kids shouldn’t rely on phones so much that they skip thinking.
But I disagree with the idea that smartphones automatically make kids “not think.”
It depends entirely on how adults guide their use.

Gonzalez,A 2A
4/29/2026 11:41:43 am

I agree that kids do rely on their phone so much and thats totally not okay.

Lainez H, 7B
4/29/2026 12:38:02 pm

I think you are right about the long-term dangers, especially for younger generations who use phones as a crutch. When kids rely on a device to solve basic math or find every answer, they lose the ability to think critically and solve problems on their own. We are losing essential life skills because we’ve traded deep thinking for the convenience of an app.

Valdez K 2A
5/1/2026 08:47:32 am

I agree. Smartphones do have their benefits such as providing us with easier access to information but I feel like there are certain things that we need to preserve regardless if we have an easier way to do it.

Gracie Ramos
5/1/2026 08:48:09 am

I agree that during a long-term period of time can turn into children building too much dependency on phones. And i can cause them to not be able to think creatively because they're use to having information easily fed to them.

Thorpe, Zamyriah 7B
4/29/2026 09:17:28 am

Smartphones aren’t reducing human intelligence. They’re shifting it: away from memorizing information and toward navigating, evaluating, and using information in a world where knowledge is instantly accessible.

dneja david
4/29/2026 11:28:08 am

I think smartphones are not making people less intelligent, but they are changing what intelligence looks like today. Before phones, people had to remember a lot more information like phone numbers, directions, and facts. Now, we can just look things up in seconds, which makes life easier and faster.

Chavez D. 7B
4/30/2026 03:02:29 pm

I do agree with this takeaway. I do believe that smartphones and technology are changing what intelligence looks like today because of the modern convenience that they offer today that you mentioned, but I do feel like some people are way too dependent on them at times.

Gonzalez,A 2A
4/29/2026 11:40:38 am

Smartphones arent making people less intillengent, i feel like its just changing the way people use their inteillgence, people now focs on finding information quicker.

Calito V.
4/30/2026 08:40:37 am

I agree as people just find information for a one time thing and just forget it the next day. People don't really learn they just get it and they forget.

Israel Hernandez 7B
4/29/2026 12:31:01 pm

I don’t think smartphones make people less intelligent. They just change how we use our brains. We don’t memorize as much now because our phones can store information for us. But we still have to think, make decisions, and tell what information is true. Phones can be helpful, but too much scrolling can hurt our focus. So smartphones aren’t making us dumber they’re just changing what being smart looks like today.

Newbill, T 1A
5/1/2026 08:38:08 am

this makes a lot of sense . However , I still believe that too much quick answers and quick information makes people not want to use their brains for anything anymore . what happens if technology all of a sudden crash or we don't have that anymore . most people wont know anything . especially kids that over consume technology .

Skylar B 6B
5/1/2026 09:13:09 pm

I believe that is true while I do believe some people may lose some intelligence but over all its really just changing our mindsets and how we think.

Helen Lainez 7B
4/29/2026 12:33:00 pm

Smartphones may be making us less intelligent by causing us to rely on screens instead of our own memories. Constant scrolling and easy answers can weaken our attention spans and take away the need for deep thinking. This dependency makes it harder for people to solve problems or remember information without the help of a device.

Fraire Y 1A
4/30/2026 09:31:19 am

Yes that is true it makes us forget about things faster and not want to pay attention to what is going on with the world revolving around us.

Luna W. 1A
4/29/2026 09:13:31 pm

I belive that smartphones are changing on what intelligence looks like today. Yes, they may have some bad effects on us like consuming our daily lifes but they also have pros to it. For example like global communication for all people, important information and online education.

Fraire Y 1A
4/30/2026 09:29:51 am

Yes that is true they do have some advantages but there are many ways that you can learn to do things without having to ask the internet.

Skylar B 6B
5/1/2026 09:06:04 pm

That is very much true I don't think we are necessarily losing intelligence to a certain degree but I do believe we are shaping the way our intelligence look like today.

Calito V. 5B
4/30/2026 08:29:59 am

Are smartphones making people less intelligent, or just changing what intelligence looks like today? It feels as if they are going less intelligent but if you look around, see the different technology and tools we have you can really say we are getting less intelligent. I would generally think as some kid it takes a lot more time for them to understand and learn new things.

Fraire Y 1A
4/30/2026 09:13:45 am

I think that smartphones are making people less intelligent because now everyone whenever they don't know something they run to chat gbt so they can answer the question insted of trying to learn what they don't know.

Chavez D. 7B
4/30/2026 02:53:54 pm

In my opinion, I think smartphones and technology aren't inherently making people less intelligent. I just think people prefer to use them in a manner that brings them the most enjoyment at that given moment. The reason I believe this is that your smartphone honestly holds most of all the information in the world at your fingertips. It it really is just dependent on how you utilize it.

Joaquin J 2A
5/1/2026 10:07:27 am

I agree because not everyone abuses tech like how little kids do these days. some people use smartphones for studying or marketing or promoting but other use for lack of information

Newbill, T 1A
5/1/2026 08:29:40 am

I think technology does affect people's brains especially kids. nobody wants to actually think and use their brain anymore . they just want quick answers.

Gracie Ramos
5/1/2026 08:39:26 am

Technology has changed what intelligence looks like today. It's helped us become more aware and sensitive of the world we live in. But there has been a dependence of artificial intelligence that's caused us more damage then good.

Armani Cordova 7B
5/3/2026 08:14:38 pm

I agree with this comment also the cancel culture that this generation set upon ourselves made us more aware of what we do or say in any setting it could be on social media or in real life

Joaquin J 2A
5/1/2026 10:05:48 am

I believe that tech is not effecting our intellegence, if anything it may be boosting our intellegene because of what we can do. For example we can study for a test with Ai made flash cards or make presentations easier.

Skylar B 6B
5/1/2026 09:02:31 pm

I would say it is a bit of both. In some ways smartphones are making people less intelligence because they really don't have to think per say if they want to look or find something out all you have to do is just look it up. But at the same time some people might just have intelligence but the smartphones are changing and shaping how they think.

Armani Cordova 7B
5/3/2026 08:13:32 pm

I agree with this comment the internet and other newsletters platforms can shape different ways you think of things

Watson S 1A
5/1/2026 09:21:58 pm

I dont believe its the actual phone thats making people dumb, slow, or less intelligent. I think its helpful to learn about things that are happening or has happened to us. However, heavily relying on the media will cause you to not keep the knowledge in you mind.

Armani Cordova 7B
5/3/2026 08:12:26 pm

I my opinion smart phone can be helpful to build the intelligence we need , the internet uses some credible resources to back up their information.Like a YouTube video explaining the political state etc.Intelligence can be the way you make it .
