"The art of communication is the language of leadership." ~Humes
Dear Parents,
This email will be a bit lengthy, which is why I'm choosing this method of communication. The first semester is quickly coming to an end. Before it does, I’d like to take a moment to remind you of some classroom expectations so that your child can end it well.
Tutoring
Recently, there has been an influx of students attending my tutoring sessions. While I am thrilled that they are coming, I’d like to reiterate the tutoring policy for our class.
Tutoring sessions are for students who are struggling academically and failing as a result; for students who received a low grade on an assignment and want to bring it up; or for students who are struggling with an assignment before it is due and want to come in and ask questions or get clarification.
Tutoring is not for students who are failing as a result of never having submitted an assignment and want to come in and make it up. My assignment deadlines are generous, so I do not offer extra credit work, make-up work or accept late assignments unless the circumstances are extenuating, all of which is stated in our class syllabus.
Over the holiday break, please sit down with your child and read through the entire syllabus, so that he or she is clear on our classroom expectations.
Missing Homework
On another note, we are 2 weeks in to a book study. Three if you count the holiday. We have been very busy. However, your child has not been keeping up the pace. I beg you to question your child about why the work required for my class is not getting done. It is not difficult work.
For example, for Mixed Ink, our class blog, they simply have to comment on a post, then reply to two classmates’ posts. There is no right or wrong answer. They simply post their opinion about current or world events. Then, there is Membean, a vocabulary building assignment. (The sign in button is in the top right hand corner.) Both of these assignments are online and have week-long deadlines. I post on Sundays. They're due on Fridays by 11:59 p.m. Every other week, there is an assessment on Membean.com.
Currently, your child is not doing these assignments. Not doing them will cause their grades to drop drastically. If you are monitoring them, you will see that there are zeros for these assignments each week. There is still time for your child to bring this failing grade up. He or she simply needs to do the work.
Please visit this class Web site (www.EnglishFury.com) or the Parent Portal to keep track of assignments, homework and grades, and let me know if I can help you or your child.
Holiday Homework
This week, during the break, students will have three assignments:
1. Book Study. This week, we started a book study. The students had a month to buy the book called "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines. They have a reading calendar that has dates that assignments are due. Two are due during the break.
2. Mixed Ink. This is the same assignment they've had all week. It's due by Friday night at 11:59.
3. Membean. This assignment requires that your child works at least three days a week for 15 minutes each day, for a total of 45 minutes.
Please make sure that your child do these assignments so that when they return, they will be on track, and hopefully boost their grades. These assignments cannot be made up. Since they have an entire week to complete them, when they close, it cannot be reopened.
If you are having any trouble finding website addresses, logins, etc., please read the syllabus on our homepage and become familiar with this site. Your child should have already gone over this site with you, since reading and electronically signing it was the first grade received in my class. The syllabus can be found here: www.EnglishFury.com.
Thank you!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me during my conference period
(M-F, 8:20 a.m. to 9:10 a.m.) or after school.
Please enjoy your holiday!
Until next time,
