1. On the LINED side of your index card, on the top line in the left corner, write your full name.
2. In the middle, write your birth month and day in numbers like this: 00/00. Do not write the year.
3. Add the numbers, reduce them to a single digit (if necessary), then write it on the top line, in the right corner.
4. Now, think: This semester, think about how you think, how you learn and how you make decisions. Do all the choices you make reflect your values? Who are you? Where are you going?
5. On the first line under your name and month/day of birth, use no more than two lines to write your ____-word essay that describes you. (The number you get when you add the numbers to your birthday is what goes in that blank line above.)
Example #1: My birth month and day are July 1, so 7/1.
7+1=8
This would be an 8-word essay
Example #2: If my birth month and day were December 22 or 12/22, I would follow these directions:
1+2+2+2=7 or 12+22=34, and 3+4=7 (see how I reduced the 34 to a single digit?!)
This would be a 7-word essay
6. After your essay, skip a few spaces and under it, and in the very center, write ONE WORD that you can focus on everyday, all year long that sums up who you are, who you wan to be or how you want to live, behave and think. Under it, write a BRIEF manifesto: why you chose that word and how it might help you become a better thinker, learner and doer.
7. After, turn your card over to the blank side and PIMP IT OUT!!! Put stickers, drawings, words, shapes, etc., that tells who you are! See my examples below!
Note: It will take intention and commitment, but if you let it, your essay and one word will shape not only your year, but also, you. They will become the mental, emotional and moral compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps.
