Sample ConverStation Discussion Log

You will be given guided questions that you must respond to with fidelity. You should also develop at least three emerging questions as you consider your answer, your classmate's answers and class discussions.

[Guided Question using Goldilocks and the Three Bears]

Example #1: Explain how one of the main characters felt about the conflict being faced.

In the story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Mummy bear never directly says how she feels. She could have been afraid, angry, shocked or possibly even happy, depending on the condition of the broken furniture. Maybe new digs were long over due. When Mummy Bear exclaims, "Someone's been eating my porridge," the author's use of exclamation points indicates that she was shocked, upset or maybe even excited about the vandalism.

Example #2: Evaluate the author’s use of language, including length and complexity of sentences, diction and Standard English versus dialect.

In the story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the author uses language that gives clues to geography. Words like "forest," "Mummy" and "porridge" gives readers a clue that the story might take place somewhere in Europe, possibly Germany or other region, where forests are prominent and using Mummy instead of Mommy is more common.

Emerging question(s) Examples: Why was the bears' home opened? Why was a child in the forest alone? Was Goldilocks obese since she was capable of breaking a small bear's chair?
