Article of the Week

Literary and artistic citizenship is the obligation of writers and artists to raise and address the nuances of social, political, economic, ethical, cultural and historical praxis in what they create. First, you have to know what those nuances are.

​By reading the newspaper, listening to the news, or watching the news on television, not only will you be an informed citizen, you will strengthen your reading and writing skills, stay abreast of entertainment and sports news, be up-to-date with politics, get useful ideas about researches and projects, improve your vocabulary skills, and become an above-average speaker.
1. Identify a trending topic by finding the topic on from any news source and from a newspaper or from TV news. This topic must be a current trend in news within one week.

​2. Identify each source, construct a brief summary of the topic and evaluate the story’s significance. Use the attached data sheet to complete the assignment. Your job is to understand why these topics are the featured stories of the day or week.

Consider the following questions:
  • Why are these issues important to our culture? Be specific.
  • What do they imply about our society or the time in which we live? Watch for clichés.
  • What differing points of view might people have on this topic? Be more complex than right or wrong.

By the end of the week you will have completed two trending topic assignments.
